Anxiety & Depression Over the Holidays Dec 20, 2020
    Show notes

This week on The Girlfriend Doctor Show, Dr. Anna talks about negative feelings during the holidays, and the emotions that can come with them. From anxiety and depression to PTSD, the holiday season isn't always joyful for everyone. Whether it be through the loss of a loved one, a disorder out of your control, or a rainy cloud over your head, if you are struggling, it's ok to not be ok. On this episode Dr. Anna does a deep emotional dive with The Therapy Twins, Jane Buckley and Joan Landino, to speak about their own emotions and struggles. Without dealing with these negative emotions or trying to cover them up, they can manifest themselves as harmful side effects to every day life such as anxiety, depression, or even disease. Jane and Joan are identical twins who, like most of us, have had hardships in their lives that have manifested into negative traits. At one point even distancing them from their own family during the holidays, Jane and Joan give us a look into the world of therapy that can help you shake out some of the holiday blues. Through compassion, humility, and self-awareness, the twins are authors of "From Under the Hood: Therapy Twins' Guide to a Smoother Ride", a cliff notes guide of tips to help uncover a lifetime worth of trauma, drama, laughter and healing. The Six Habits to Happiness, Joy, and Success Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

These six mental habits will help you choose to live a life of happiness and joy every single day! I'm joined by Laura DiBenedetto, author of The Six Habits, to talk about how she discovered these habits and puts them into practice - and why you should, too.

    Key Takeaways

6 Mental Habits to True Happiness

    1. Kindness
    2. Acceptance
    3. Radical Gratitude
    4. Presence
    5. Goodness
    6. Intention

    About Laura DiBenedetto

TEDx Speaker, #1 Bestselling author of The Six Habits and Life Mastery Coach, Laura DiBenedetto teaches how to create the life of our dreams without sacrificing what we love. As Founder and CEO of Vision Advertising, a company that she built aged 19, she has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs build and grow profitable enterprises entirely on their terms.

Choosing Joy and Success for YOU

Laura DiBenedetto brings such a joyous conversation today that I am only too glad to share with you. She talks about how she started her professional life by looking to other people for what success means. She pushed herself to be successful to please her parents, her colleagues, and other people…

But what she really found was that in order to truly feel successful, she needed to do it for herself. It doesn't matter how full your resume is if you're miserable - what makes you happy?

You also have to learn to give yourself permission to make decisions from an adult point of view, rather than the 10-year-old you who formed a lot of your initial beliefs. As you age, of course, your views and beliefs will change. Laura says you have to give yourself the space to examine what they are now.

The Six Mental Habits to Happiness

Laura explains why and how she started researching the mental habits of the happiest people on earth. It's about practicing kindness to yourself, acceptance of yourself, radical gratitude always, being present, knowing goodness, and setting good intentions.

Laura says you might have a good grasp of some of these habits, but if there's one spot you're lacking, focus on that one first. She knows how difficult it can be to practice kindness to yourself. Laura gives some great examples of what this could look like for you.

Finally, Laura talks about why it's so important to walk the path of truth. Being truthful and honest, even when it's hard, is one of the kindest acts you can do for yourself and for other people.

Rank the things are and aren't working in your life. What do you care about? What are you scared about?

As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.

    In This Episode

    • Why you have to chase success for yourself, not anyone else [5:00]
    • How to give yourself permission to make decisions from an adult point of view [11:30]
    • Why you need to adopt these 6 habits so you can feel true happiness [15:00]
    • What it looks like to practice kindness to yourself [22:00]
    • What happens when you walk the path of truth [32:00]

    Quotes

"Who cares how great your resume is. If you're miserable, it doesn't matter." [5:06]

"We make so many decisions from a place of passion and fear, but more often than not, it's fear." [12:49]

"Pursuing our dreams because of joy should not be rare. Pursuing wealth because of fun and because it's great to have nice things and do for others should not be rare." [15:01]

"I will tell you right now, each of us, you, me, anyone that's listening: You are already good at some of these habits. They might need tweaking but you're already good in some of them. You might even be great at one or two. You need to figure out which one is causing you the most pain, put out the biggest fire, and start there. The order is not my prescription, it's yours." How to Eat Your Way to a Healthier Menopause Dec 01, 2020
    Show notes

Eat your way to a healthier menopause. I'm joined by Dr. Liz Lipski, my dear girlfriend who shares her insight into gut health, especially for post-menopausal women. We all know by now that the gut is the gateway to our overall health, so when we figure out what foods we can and can't eat, and what type of diet we thrive on, our health will be unstoppable.

    Key Takeaways

Foods You Should Eat for Estrogen Balance

    • Broccoli
    • Cabbage
    • Brussel Sprouts
    • Kale
    • Kohlrabi
    • Mustard Greens

    About Dr. Liz Lipski

Prof. Liz Lipski, Ph.D., CNS, FACN, IFMCP, BCHN, LDN is Professor and the Director of the Academic Development for the graduate programs in Clinical Nutrition at the Maryland University of Integrative Health, the owner of the Innovative Healing Academy, and the author of Digestive Wellness, now in its 5th edition.

Dr. Lipski holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition, is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition (FACN), and holds two board certifications in clinical nutrition (CNS, and BCHN) and one in functional medicine (IFMCP). She is on faculty for The Institute for Functional Medicine, and the Metabolic Medicine Institute fellowship program. She is on the board for

the American Nutrition Association, and advisory boards for the Certified International Health Coaches, and the Autism Hope Alliance.

Dr. Lipski has been a co-author in peer-reviewed papers and is the author of several books: Digestive Wellness, Digestive Wellness for Children, and Leaky Gut Syndrome, and a video course The Art of Digestive Wellness.

After 30 years of clinical practice, she devotes her time to teaching, writing, and building the field of personalized nutrition.

Heal Your Gut for a Healthy Menopause

Dr. Liz Lipski devotes her life to finding innovative and sustainable ways to heal your gut microbiome. She shares how quickly you can change your gut health. It might surprise you to learn you can start feeling improvements in around 24 hours!

Did you know that the word diet doesn't have to refer to food restriction for weight loss? We're changing the approach to the diet to focus on the type of food and eating habits that help YOU thrive. Liz explains why more and more people are turning to restrictive diets, such as gluten-free, vegan, Keto, or carnivore instead of getting to the root of their health problems.

Especially for post-menopausal women, we need to focus on eating estrogen-balancing foods. Liz shares some of the best foods for this, including broccoli, cabbage, and kale, so make sure you're loading your plates with these.

You also might have noticed, as you age, that you can no longer tolerate some foods like you used to. Liz explains how this could be a histamine intolerance that's showing up in your body through bloating or other uncomfortable symptoms.

    Discover the FODMAP Diet

One way that Liz encourages you to explore your food sensitivities and intolerances is to follow the FODMAP diet. This is an elimination diet that can indicate what foods you should avoid. One thing we both know is that when we put our patients on the FODMAP diet, their symptoms improve dramatically in a short period of time.

Most people have a diet that's very high in processed foods. We should all endeavor to be more mindful of what we eat and try to stick to more natural, whole foods. Trust me, when you find the diet that's right for your body, you will thrive on it!

Liz also explains the second part to having a healthy gut: making time for yourself and keeping your stress levels in check. When we prioritize our own mental health and well-being, we're better able to keep our guts healthy. Putting ourselves first also gives us more energy to assist others.

How do you fill your own bucket? What activities do you find gives you more energy? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.

    In This Episode

    • How quickly we can change our gut microbiome [7:45]
    • Why more people are turning to restrictive diets [15:45]
    • What foods are the most helpful for estrogen balance [20:35]
    • How a histamine intolerance can show up as belly bloat [29:15]
    • What the low FODMAP diet is [32:30]
    • What happens to our body when we eat a diet high in processed foods [36:00]
    • What the power of the right diet for your body is [43:30]

    Quotes

"For me, digestion is really this river of life. Just like any river, it can get slowed down, sluggish, not work very well, and dried up, or it can flood. We don't want either of those things to happen. We just want this to be working really well." [11:07]

"Especially for women, cabbage family foods are so protective for breast cancer and other hormone-dependent cancers." [22:20]

"I think it's just interesting to know what those trigger foods are for us and be aware of it. Then you can make a choice." [40:32]

"Our body is always trying to tell us and if we slow down enough, it will give us wisdom." [54:45]

How to Raise Your Energetic Vibration Nov 24, 2020
    Show notes

Raising your energetic vibration is something that all women should prioritize throughout their lives. Even if this is something you've never thought about before, this episode with Jay and Monica Campbell will enlighten you to the benefits of a high vibe life and give you insight into how to achieve one for yourself.

    Key Takeaways

    How to raise your vibration:

    1. Lower your insulin signal
    2. Build muscle
    3. Increase your cardiovascular health/heart rate
    4. Understand the balance between sound body and sound mind

    About Jay and Monica Campbell

A former champion men's physique competitor and current 4x international best selling author in the optimized health care space, Jay Campbell is a global thought leader on hormones, biohacking, fat loss, and higher consciousness.

Jay is a NO-nonsense, authentic, and fully transparent guy (in a day and age when being hyper-masculine is frowned on), and FEARLESS in his servant mission of leading humanity towards full-spectrum optimization of the body-mind, heart, and soul.

Since returning from 12 days in The Sacred Valley of Peru, he's experienced a seismic energetic shift manifesting in a profound new focus of raising the collective vibration of humanity so we reach planetary consciousness aka unconditional love.

Monica Campbell is the author of Cracking the Fountain of Youth Code: A Woman's Guide to Being Healthier, Happier, and Empowered for Life. She manifested her perfect love and relationship with Jay into her life and now helps bring fulfillment into other women's lives.

Choosing the Best Version of Yourself

What I loved the most about this conversation with Jay and Monica Campbell is Monica's complete openness about her first marriage and how she raised her own energetic vibration to find Jay.

Monica talks about how when her first marriage ended, she turned to a party lifestyle. She thought this would fulfill her, but ultimately, it didn't, leaving her feeling like something was missing for her.

She decided to honor who she truly was inside by learning more about her inner Monica. She knew what qualities she wanted to embody to be the best version of herself and Monica decided to embody them.

Jay adds some thoughts regarding how repressed and blocked emotions can impact your overall health. Because blocked emotions can lead to long-term illness, Jay is very intentional about helping others raise their energetic vibration.

Raise Your Vibration to Optimize Your Love Creation!

Part of this is choosing who you want to be. Jay and Monica talk about how you can intentionally choose the type of person you want to be. And as long as this person is in line with your high vibration being, you will thrive.

So how do you raise your vibration? Jay takes us through four ways to start. Lowering your blood insulin level is very important, as is improving your cardiovascular health. He also talks about why building your muscular strength is so important.

Finally, Jay provides some insight into understanding the balance you need to achieve between your strong body and your strong mind. He explains that when you work your spiritual and emotional muscles, you raise your energetic vibration.

What steps are you taking to raise your energetic vibration? How can you be more present and honoring to yourself? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.

    In This Episode

    • How you can honor who you are to be the best version of yourself [12:15]
    • How blocked emotions can lead to long-term and chronic illness [14:30]
    • Why you should decide who you'll show up as in this world [28:15]
    • How to raise your vibration [30:30]
    • What happens when you work your emotional and spiritual muscles [32:15]

    Quotes

"You can choose to live your life in a state of being that is resonant and coherent which is full of love, full of forgiveness, full of acceptance, full of allowance, full of all the things that a person who is attempting to give love, serve mankind without attachment or expectant to an outcome. Just doing it for the general existence of joy and happiness in your life." [26:42]

"We've got to understand, as people, as an individual, it's really up to us to decide how we're going to show up in the world. When you are in a place of self-acceptance, self-awareness, and self-love, you are able to project that outward and truly make a difference." [28:21]

"The love that you take at an energetic soul level is equal to the love that you make in every lifetime of physical experience." [36:29]

How to Cure Your Dry Eye Syndrome Nov 17, 2020
    Show notes

Dry Eye Syndrome plagues so many women as they get older. Our eyes naturally deteriorate, but there are some amazing ways that you can boost your eye health. I'm joined by Dr. Travis Zigler and Dr. Jenna Zigler, optometrists who specialize in dry eyes, to talk about what we can do right away to improve our eye health.

    Key Takeaways

Your 3 Day Challenge to Reduce your Blue Light Exposure:

    1. Turn off or put your phones to airplane mode when the sun goes down
    2. Do something for yourself: Read a physical book, do yoga, or meditation
    3. Take the entire hour before sleep to just wind down.

About Dr. Travis Zigler and Dr. Jenna Zigler

Dr. Travis Zigler graduated in 2010 from The Ohio State University College of Optometry with Magna Cum Laude honors. He is the founder of Eye Love whose mission is to heal 1,000,000 dry eye sufferers naturally.

Dr. Travis and his wife, Dr. Jenna Zigler, use the profits from Eye Love to fund free and low-cost clinics in Jamaica and in the US. They also started a charity called the Eye Love Cares Foundation which provides exams, glasses, and sunglasses for those in need, free education, and scholarships for students that align with their mission.

Previously, Dr. Travis and Dr. Jenna owned two optometry practices, which they sold in 2017 to focus on their online efforts. Dr. Travis enjoys reading to his son, Jude, traveling to Jamaica, and playing the ukulele while he drinks his morning coffee.

In the future, the Foundation will fund permanent free and low-cost clinics in both the US and Jamaica, and it is their goal to provide optometry scholarships for students who have an interest in eye care mission work.

    Why We Get Dry Eyes

As we age, our eye health naturally decreases and dry eyes become more common. This is much for the same reasons that women find their vaginas drier after menopause. I'm so glad to welcome Dr. Travis and Dr. Jenna Zigler onto The Girlfriend Doctor, who are both huge advocates of the Keto-Green Diet!

Following a diet like Keto-Green is one of the first things you can do to improve the dryness of your eyes. This is just one of the steps that Jenna shares about how you can care for your eyes. Her other initial recommendations surround the care of your eyelids, as these have a very direct impact on your overall eye health.

Travis and Jenna talk about whether you should wear contact lenses or not. They say that single-use contacts are better and also give insight into how best to care for your eyes while wearing them.

We also talk about makeup. Sadly, not many brands of makeup are truly eye-safe. Travis explains why you should replace your makeup regularly, what the problem with permanent makeup is, and why he's planning a range of single-use makeup brushes.

    The Problem with Blue Light

It's not just what you use on and around your eyes that can impact their health and dryness. Travis and Jenna talk about other skin conditions, such as rosacea, that relate to your eye health and what you can do to treat both.

By now, you're likely well aware of how bad blue light is for not just our eye health, but our circadian rhythm as well. Jenna and Travis absolutely recommend using blue light blocking glasses whenever you're on the computer. But in addition to this, they encourage you to get direct sunlight without the use of sunglasses in the early morning and late afternoon light.

Jenna and Travis conclude this insightful discussion with their three best tips for improving your eye dryness. Included in this, Jenna explains how you can give yourself a gentle eyelid massage to help improve the moisture in your eyes. Travis ends by giving us a 3-day challenge to reduce your exposure to blue light in the hour before you sleep.

Do you suffer from dry eyes? Will you be participating in Travis's challenge? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.

    Quotes

"We have an overgrowth of bacteria on our eyelids. If that overgrowth becomes too much it produces a toxic waste product. That causes inflammation, redness, and irritation." [10:44]

"The sun's also good for blue light. Blue light regulates our sleep cycle. When the sun comes up, it's the most abundant source of blue light and it's more than your screens could ever get close to. When the sun goes down at night, blue light goes away. Blue light going away tells our body to start producing melatonin." [31:33]

"Once the sun goes down, you should eliminate all blue light from your life. Which means putting down your phones, putting down your computers, turning off your tv because that's going to keep you from getting in a deep sleep. Deep sleep is what you need to rest your mind and body." [32:12]

"Take the TV out of your bedroom because the bedroom should be for sleep and sex only." [33:13]

"Get your eyelid hygiene regimen down. The simplest way is adding Hypochlorous Acid to the end of your daily routine." [41:04]
