The Gilgo Beach Murders: The Case Against Rex Heuermann

For nearly two decades, the remains of young women kept turning up along the desolate stretches of Long Island — in the scrub brush off Ocean Parkway, in wooded areas out east, in places no one was supposed to find them. And for most of that time, no one was held accountable. I’m Tony Brueski, and this podcast is my deep dive into one of the most chilling serial murder cases in modern American history — the Gilgo Beach murders and the case against Rex Heuermann, the New York architect now charged with the killing of seven women spanning from 1993 to 2010.

This isn’t a case summary. It’s the full picture — the women who were allegedly targeted and discarded, the investigative failures that let a suspected killer allegedly operate in plain sight for decades, and the forensic breakthroughs that finally led to an arrest in July 2023. I break down the evidence prosecutors have built — DNA analysis, cellphone data, digital files allegedly recovered from Heuermann’s own computer — and the defense strategy aimed at dismantling it. I cover the courtroom battles, the rulings on evidence admissibility, and every development as this case moves toward its next chapter.

But more than anything, this podcast is about the women at the center of it all. Sandra Costilla. Valerie Mack. Jessica Taylor. Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Melissa Barthelemy. Megan Waterman. Amber Costello. They had names. They had people who loved them. And they deserve more than a headline.

New episodes drop regularly as the case develops. If you want to understand the Gilgo Beach murders — the facts, the failures, and what justice actually looks like when it finally shows up — you’re in the right place.

Would You Buy The Gilgo Beach Killers Home? Dec 13, 2024
Show notes What happens when a home’s dark history becomes impossible to ignore? Rex Heuermann's Long Island residence, once an unassuming house in a picturesque neighborhood, now carries the grim weight of alleged horrors. With whispers of a basement “torture dungeon” and the unsettling debate surrounding Asa Ellerup’s lingering presence in the home, the story only grows stranger. Asa’s reluctance to finalize her divorce, her participation in a documentary, and even the presence of her emotional support dog at court hearings raise questions about her state of mind and the choices she’s making.
Could you live in a house with such a history, or is it destined to become another vacant lot with stories to tell?

Estranged Wife of Gilgo Beach Suspect Leaves Longtime Home for Fresh Start Nov 25, 2024
Show notes The Massapequa Park home of alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann will soon stand empty as his estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, prepares to relocate. Ellerup, whose 30-year attachment to the house was shattered by its connection to the investigation, has decided to move to South Carolina to begin a new chapter.
Her attorney, Robert Macedonio, explained Ellerup’s reasoning, stating, “To start the healing process, she wants to move on.” He also shared that Ellerup’s adult children, whom she shares with Heuermann, plan to eventually join her in South Carolina.
Ellerup filed for divorce shortly after Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023. Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was charged in connection with the killings of four women whose bodies were discovered in burlap sacks along Ocean Parkway more than a decade ago. These victims—Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman—were found during the 2010 search for Shannan Gilbert, whose death in a nearby marsh was later ruled accidental.
Earlier this year, prosecutors announced Heuermann’s involvement in two additional murders: Jessica Taylor in 2003 and Sandra Costilla in 1993.
The home itself has been central to the investigation. In the summer of 2023, federal agents conducted an intensive search of the property, with Macedonio previously noting a focus on the basement. Investigators recovered a cache of weapons, paint chips, and a large rectangular object covered in a blue cloth. Macedonio declined to disclose what evidence was collected but confirmed the family was out of state during the initial search.
A subsequent search of the home in May brought renewed attention to the case. Investigators placed additional materials into evidence bags, further linking the property to the long-unsolved killings. Despite the upheaval, Macedonio clarified that the house is not for sale at this time.
For Ellerup, the decision to leave represents an opportunity to move beyond the trauma of her husband’s alleged crimes. "She has lost her attachment to the house," Macedonio said, emphasizing her determination to rebuild her life.
Heuermann remains in custody as legal proceedings continue, and the Massapequa Park home—a quiet, single-story residence in a Long Island neighborhood—now stands as a chilling reminder of the case that has gripped the nation.

We’ll explore the complex web of victims, forensic breakthroughs, and legal maneuvers that have shaped the Gilgo Beach investigation for decades. Is justice for these victims within reach, or will financial obstacles threaten to unravel one of the most significant serial killer cases in recent history?
