Millennial Burnout, Perfectionism, and Our Four Year Anniversary [181] Mar 04, 2019
    Show notes

We are celebrating our four-year anniversary on the pod! Yowza! Thank you so much for your continued support. It means the world to Karima and me. In this celebratory episode, Karima and I are chatting about a symptom that many Millennials seem to be suffering from and don't even realize it – Millennial burnout. We also touch upon the issue of perfectionism that many lawyers find themselves grappling with. Must we spend hours reviewing a simple email out of fear of sending a less-than-perfect draft? We round out the conversation by exploring what "self-care" really means and if it truly lives up to its promise.

How I'm Using Public Speaking to Grow My Business and Brand [180] Feb 25, 2019
    Show notes

For many, public speaking is terrifying. For others, it's just a fun hobby. For me, having the opportunity to stand in front of a crowd and capture their attention for a prolonged period of time is a privilege and an opportunity for business development, when done right. Over the past 7 years, when I decided to take public speaking more seriously and to make it part of my business, I've learned how to work the stage, so to speak, to make public speaking an additional source of revenue in my business.

What You'll Learn in This Episode:

    • Before you begin your speaking journey, you should know what you're talking about
    • Why selecting a few topics to become known for is way more effective than listing about 30 things you can talk about
    • Practice and preparation is key and can mean the difference between delivering a mediocre presentation and delivering a presentation that helps you secure business long after you present
    • Even if you're serving on a panel with others, how can you best prepare?
    • Set up a speakers page either on an existing website or as an entire website dedicated to you as a speaker
    • Should you speak for free or only accept engagements that pay you?
    • What can you be doing with your slides to help provide the necessary information for attendees to know about you
    • When responding to questions
    • How can you promote an upcoming speaking engagement on social media without sounding obnoxious?
    • What is the best way to get the most out of video footage that you might have recorded while you were presenting?
    • How to find conferences to apply to speak at

F*ck Positive Thinking: Effective Methodology to Retrain Your Brain with Kara Loewentheil [179] Feb 18, 2019
    Show notes

The way you think about things affect how you feel and that impacts how you behave and how you show up in the world. If you're like me, you might have a lot of negative self-talk that feels limiting. If only we knew how to change our mindset, we could probably unlock a whole new level of amazingness, right? Well, let's undo some mindset damage, shall we?

My guest today is Master Certified Life Coach, former women's rights lawyer, and host of the popular podcast, Unf*ck Your Brain, Kara Loewentheil. Kara holds a B.A. from Yale and a J.D. from Harvard Law. She helps women break through their confidence issues and negative self-talk and finally put into action their true desires. Her work isn't based on manifestation and law of attraction bs, it's rooted in cognitive psychology-based techniques and feminist theory.

Kara shares how we can decipher between helpful and unhelpful thoughts, what the two steps are to begin retraining our brains, why "fake it til you make it" is utter crap, and how to assess our thoughts throughout the day.

Joining me today is Dr. Sharon Cohen, relationship and love consultant. She received her PhD from the University of Texas and has been helping busy professionals have committed and fulfilling relationships.

Can Twitter Be Used to Start a Movement? with @LadyLawyerDiary Jaime Santos and Kendyl Hanks [176] Jan 28, 2019
    Show notes

There is more to social media than just mindless scrolling and Instagram rabbit holes. In fact, Jaime Santos and Kendyl Hanks have managed to create a forum celebrating women in the law, highlighting their war stories, and occasionally outing stupid sexist stuff under the Twitter account @LadyLawyerDiary

Kendyl is an appellate advocate, who litigates high-stakes business litigation and test cases involving contract disputes, fraud, fiduciary duty, alter ego, constitutional law, to name a few.

Jaime A. Santos is an appellate litigation associate where works on cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and federal appellate and trial courts, on a wide range of cases. She has helped to spearhead sexual harassment reforms within the federal judiciary and has testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding these issues.

    Jaime and Kendyl share:

    • How the idea for the account @LadyLawyerDiary came about, their main goal and purpose for the forum,
    • Changes and impact made by the forum in the community,
    • Why they chose Twitter as opposed to other social media platforms,
    • And interesting stories from account users.

Is it time to rethink success? Maybe you dream of buying a big house or you want to travel all over the world. Maybe you want to work fewer hours each week or you want to spend more time with your family. Lawyers have so many aspirations but for some reason, we tend to think that there is only one way to achieve those dreams – work ridiculously hard for many years and then eventually, acquire everything you want. Highlights from the Conversation:

    • Start with your vision of what you want in life (and you can DREAM BIG here!)
    • What if you can't formulate your vision because it's too scary or overwhelming? What do you do then?
    • Once you've locked down your vision, you have to ask yourself: where am I now and where do I want to be?
    • After setting your strategy, you then begin to lay down some goals to support the strategy
    • What should you use to measure your progress and determine if you're even moving in the right direction?
    • When you finally reach your goal(s), you should celebrate! So should you pop bottles, buy new clothes, or celebrate with others?
