Many Christians are saying that they won't vote because neither candidate appeals to them. Not voting is still a vote, and these same Christians will have to live in the world that results from whichever candidate wins. Both political parties are using their constituents and this is a problem. Things need to be done, but ignoring the problem is not a viable solution.

By this he means that you must rightly divide the "people" of God into Jew and Gentile and understand New Testament passages in light of "the Church age." The Bible never speaks of a "Church age" but this does not prevent many from claiming that it must be there all the same. They claim it is inferred and is the "key" to correctly interpreting Jesus' prophetic words in the Olivet Discourse.

The question is tied to Jesus' words in Matthew 24 about "this generation" and the Pharisees as "brood of vipers" in Matthew 23. When interpreting Scripture, we must not let the events change the time. If a particular event doesn't meet our expectations, we need to ask why according to the rest of the Bible, not our assumptions. The time texts constrain the events to a particular timeframe. "This generation," "immediately," "right at the door," and other phrases indicate the time all of the events mentioned in Matthew 24 will happen.

End of the World or the Age? Mar 04, 2022

What age or time-period was about to come to an end when Jesus’ disciples asked about "the end of the age" in Matthew 24:3? The end of the old covenant age was on the horizon with the ministry of Jesus. He was the ultimate temple (John 2:19), sacrifice (1:29), and mediator between God and men (1 Tim. 2:5). The physical temple was no longer needed. It was designed to be a placeholder for the True Temple.

This is the second part of Gary’s response to the online debate he had with Dr. Michael Brown about Matthew 24. What did Jesus mean when He said “This generation shall not pass away until all these things take place”? Futurists like Dr. Brown reinterpret this simple statement to basically mean “that generation,” meaning a generation far in the future from the one to whom Jesus was speaking in the first century. But this reinterpretation is fraught with problems and inconsistencies, as Gary points out.

The New Testament knows nothing about a future physical temple, but it does speak often about the one standing in the first century being torn down. Gary responds to a critic of his article "All Christians are Preterists." A preterist interpretation of prophecy puts its fulfillment in the past. All Christians believe in fulfilled prophecy. This makes them preterists to some degree. What separated unbelieving Jews from believing Jews in the first century was the issue of fulfilled prophecy. Was Jesus the fulfillment of the Hebrew Scriptures that predicted a coming redeemer? Jews who rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah believed He was not the fulfillment of these many prophecies.

The Bible is God's Word and we live in God's World, so we should certainly expect that His Word should be applicable to His world. Throughout history, the Church has been a powerful agent for change in the world; that belief needs to be taught once again.

Professor Ehrman is a well-known textual critic of the New Testament and is working on a new book based on the final book of the Bible.
