The David Robinson(s) talk about the fundamental pillar of Initiative; witnessing needs or problems, and then solving without anyone asking you to do so. initiative defines you, initiative is freedom and opportunity, initiative is making a difference. David founded the Carver Academy after visiting with inner city high school students and discovered that “just say no to drugs” was not addressing the problems. He came home with the goal to show students that education was the low hanging fruit, his mission was to teach students that their initiative equals opportunity by showing them his initiative.

David Robinson and son, David Jr. speak on the fundamental pillar of Discipline. This is a tough subject, we love the idea of discipline but hate the actual practice of it. Discipline takes away some freedoms but in the end can produce something very special for us. Discipline is self control and respecting boundaries, but its a key element for growth and achievement. Discipline allows you to create success, build on wisdom and experience, it's not a punishment, it's a sacrifice.

Leadership is not something you claim, it's something that is given to you. Leaders have a great responsibility and there are no shortcuts, the captain always goes down with the ship.

Faith is the substance of what we hope for, but the evidence of those things we cannot see, faith is a goal, faith is a vision. David wants kids at Carver Academy to understand faith, their motivations and what they need to have faith in. Everything else changes, shifts and moves, the one thing that never changes is faith, it’s the one thing that keeps you grounded and focused, faith is your baseline.

David Robinson speaks on the life, works and teachings of George Washington Carver; how his own life and family have been influenced and shaped by the principals and fundamentals that Carver lived by. George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor, a professor at Tuskegee Institute and helped shape the farming industry in the American South. George promoted techniques to prevent soil depletion and the use of alternative crops like peanuts and sweet potatoes. George Washington Carver lived in an age of high racial tension, yet he received praise and recognition in both white and black communities, including honors from the NAACP.

The Fundamentals with David Robinson(s) is a podcast from Geekdom Media and hosted by the NBA Hall of Famer himself, David Robinson and his son David Jr. The life and principles of George Washington Carver and some foundational rules to live by; based upon Faith, Service, Leadership, Integrity, Discipline and Initiative became the driving force behind creating The IDEA Carver Academy, a public charter in San Antonio, Texas. The school was founded by David and his wife in 2001 and has been helping the revitalization of the East side in San Antonio and sending 100% of graduates to college.
