It's Time To Talk About Race | Part 1 (Feat. Tyreke Wesley) May 01, 2019
    Show notes

Words like “racial reconciliation” and “racial sensitivity” bring feelings and thoughts, but most of us are not doing a deep dive into the conversation… but we can and it’s not that hard. In this podcast, Robby and Lee interview Tyreke Wesley about the subtleties of racism, how we can personally reflect on our own experiences and shift perspectives leading towards unity.

    Main Ideas

    • The past narratives of racism in our culture and in our personal lives still impact today’s culture.
    • Racism isn’t just overt and aggressive; it can also be a passive perspective of unexamined beliefs.
    • Our personal past experiences impact our beliefs more than we normally acknowledge but we need to talk about them and acknowledge the real.
    • Conversations about race with men we trust will help us grow in our understanding and ability to love others well.

    Discussion Questions

    1. How does knowing another person’s story affect the conversation? If you have ever experienced a change of heart toward someone after hearing their story, share.
    2. What is your story with regard to race and relationships with people different than you racially or culturally? Be as honest and real as possible knowing you won’t be judged or “fixed” by the men in your group.
    3. Are there any beliefs from your story that you may need to change your thinking on?
    4. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” What fears do you have when you consider this topic?
    5. What would keep you from watching a documentary or reading a book to go deeper on this subject? There are some suggestion in Part 2.

What does this mean (for me personally)?

What am I going to do about it (what step of faith is God inviting me to take)?

    Q & A Apr 17, 2019
    Show notes

Listening to a podcast can be confusing and leave you with questions without a way to ask them. On this episode Robby and Lee sit down to answer questions that listeners have sent in on everything from how not to “fix” a friend to “what is your thought on older divorced men having premarital sex?”

    Discussion Questions:

    • What is something that youneed to trust God more with?
    • When was the last time you had someone in your life who really knew you? Is there currently someone in your life who knows your last 10%? What can you do now to take as step towards a relationship of being fully known?
    • How are you doing on “not fixing” the people who you are in close relationship with? Can we, as a group, call each other out on this?
    • Do you have a guy a season ahead and behind you? Do you have a community of men in similar a similar season who you are doing life with?

How To Talk About Money (feat. Stephen Newland) Apr 03, 2019
    Show notes

Money is one of the most difficult topics to talk about in church and with our groups, yet it’s a popular subject throughout the Bible. Clearly, God has thoughts on how we should view money, but how do we align our view with his? In this podcast, Robby and Lee interview Stephen Newland about how to have a healthy relationship with money that leads to freedom instead of shame and fear.

    Main Ideas

    • Society tells us that money is a measuring stick of our worth.
    • It’s common to have fear and shame around money.
    • Contentment is the opposite of society’s measuring stick.
    • We all have a relationship with money—either as a spender or a saver.
    • Money provides a false sense of security; trust your heavenly Father instead of money for your security and future.

    Discussion Questions

    1. What would you do if you received an extra paycheck this month?
    2. How did your parents handle money? Do you notice any of those habits in your own life?
    3. Share with your group of guys your "money story." Talk about how money impacted your life and how you felt about money.
    4. Give some words to describe what you want your relationship with money to look like. How can trusting God with your money help you take a step toward that kind of relationship?

    The Big Three

    1. What does this mean (for me personally)?
    2. What am I going to do about it (what step of faith is God inviting me to take)?

The Bible For Groups - Four Easy Steps Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

What comes to mind when you hear the words “Bible study” . . . Boring? Intimidating?Confusing?Studying the Bible doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. In this podcast, Lee and Robbie share a simple, four-step plan for studying the Bible that you can use on your own and with your group to align yourselves with truth and live as fully alive men.

    Main Ideas

    • Most guys know we should read our Bibles; we just don’t know the best way.
    • Spiritual maturity is not directly related to how many times you’ve read the Bible and prayed this week.
    • A simple four-step plan for studying the Bible is: PRAY, READ, THINK, APPLY.
    • PRAY – “Lord, teach me.”
    • READ the passage aloud as a group.
    • THINK about what stood out to you in this passage and what the context was.
    • APPLY what you read by asking yourself, “What am I going to do about this?”

    Discussion Questions

    • What was your favorite bible story growing up? Why do you think that one stands out?Let’s be honest. What are some of the hurdles you have to reading scripture more?
    • Have you ever read anything in the Bible that challenged an aspect of your beliefs or actions?
    • What is your plan for tackling a book of the bible (or topic) on your own or with your group?

How To Lead When You’re Not in Charge | Part 1 (Feat. Clay Scroggins) Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

Each of us has a unique opportunity to lead, create excellence, and make a difference right where we are. But at some point along the way we all have shrunk back from our opportunity because we’ve believed the lie that you have to be in charge to be a leader. Author and leader Clay Scroggins joins the podcast to share from his fantastic book two behaviors that all of us can get better at to grow our influence and make a difference in the lives of others.

    Podcast Summary

    • The idea of leadership that you have to be in charge to be a leader is a false belief
    • Leadership is influence – you can have influence without "authority" or a title
    • Lead yourself - because the better you lead yourself the better will be able to lead others.
    • Choose positivity – because how you see your world shapes your world - not rainbows and butterflies, but looking for the good option or positive spin.

    Discussion Questions

    • Briefly describe an early memory of wanting to lead or feeling stuck because you didn't have the authority to make decisions.
    • Have you believed that authority and leadership must be connected? Give an example.
    • What’s an area of life where you would like to lead better?
    • What does it look like for you to lead yourself well?
    • Would you consider yourself a “glass half full” or “glass half empty” kind of person? What does it look like for you to “choose positivity” in your spheres of influence at work and home?

    The Big 3 Questions

    • What does this mean for me personally?

Questioning Culture (Feat. Tim Baker) Feb 06, 2019
    Show notes

Culture is pulling us one way, but is that the right way? Does it matter? We sat down for a conversation with Tim Baker about how he learned to discern what really matters most, which wasn’t what culture had taught him. Listen to the questions he asked himself and then form your own to talk about with the men in your life.

    Podcast Summary

    • Define success by what matters most to you, not culture.
    • Pay attention to the effect you are having on those around you.
    • Ask others around you if they see your priorities aligning with what is important to you, then take a position and own it!
    • Culture will not take care of the people you love, the money you’ve earned, or the future you want.

    Discussion Questions

    • What are some of the cultural norms that have influenced the major decisions in your life?
    • What are some of the current cultural norms that seem crazy to you at this stage of your life? What should we be questioning that may seem “normal”?
    • Which ones conflict and which ones align with the goals you have for yourself?
    • Do the men in your life have permission to reflect back aspects of your life that seem out of alignment?

    The Big Three Questions

    1. What does this mean for me personally?
    2. What am I going to do about it? (What step of faith does God want me to take?)
    3. How can we help?

The Structure Of A Great Group | Intentionality Part 1 Jan 03, 2019
    Show notes

We all joined or started a small group with the hope of growing our faith and making friendships, right? So, what is the plan to intentionally pursue those goals? In this podcast we will be discussing three ways to build intentionality into our groups to best utilize our time together to grow. The three components of intentionality are calendar, content, and schedule.

    Podcast Summary:

    • We need an intentional plan to maximize the limited time we have together each week
    • Being intentional in our groups means focusing on Calendar, Content, and Schedule
    • Calendar - At the beginning of each semester discuss what you want to grow in/talk about this next semester
    • Content - See the NPMEN Group Content page for recommended study topics and resources http://northpoint.org/uploads/general/NP_Mens_Group_Content.pdf
    • Schedule – Include time for connecting, learning/discussing, and growing in each group meeting

    Discussion Questions:

    1. Is your group spending too much time in the "connect" part of the meeting (ie: more than 5 minutes per man)?
    2. What are some topics you want to grow in and discuss with your group in the next 12 months?
    3. What part of the schedule - connect, learn, & grow - does your group need more or less intentionality around?
    4. What ideas do you have to make your group be more intentional?

The Big Three Questions - this is how we grow

    1. What does this mean for me personally?
    2. What am I going to do about it? (What step of faith does God want me to take?)
    3. How can we help?
