How to go from a VFX Compositor to making two independent Sci-Fi Features & a Disney TV Series with director Hasraf 'Haz' Dulull Jun 03, 2019
    Show notes

The wonderful and highly talented and fun director, writer and VFX superstar Hasraf 'Haz' Dulull sat down with Giles Alderson and Robbie McKane to chat how he went from VFX work on The Dark Knight to making his own films 'The Beyond' and '2036 Origin Unknown' and his TV show Fast Layne.

We chat about his star in video games making cut scene graphics in an autonomous self-starting role. How he moved into the VFX film industry - specialised in compositing (combining different VFX elements into the final film) and pioneered the use of Shake and Combustible applications

How he worked on studio films culmulating in The Dark Knight for Christopher Nolan where a custom version of Shake was used to accommodate the 5K IMAX film

How he worked on commercials in VFX - moved up the rungs to lead compositor then VFX supervisor and As VFX supervisor was able to get a good perspective of production - began to work as a 'shadow director' on some CG sequences in documentary work.

We discuss how he began working on short films and building his own team where he gathered attention for his shorts in Cannes, developed relationships with Paramount and Fox for screenwriting and developing projects.

How he put is own money he had planned to buy a house on the line for his first feature - The Beyond, based on his successful short Project Cronos.

Used caché from The Beyond to push his next feature '2036 Origin Unknown' over the line and then used both of those features to pitch for Fast Layne a VFX heavy Disney TV series

Jim Cummings - How he wrote, directed and starred in his brilliant debut feature film Thunder Road with Giles Alderson & Christian James May 27, 2019
    Show notes

Jim Cummings joins Giles Alderson (The Dare) and Christian James (Fanged Up) to talk about his debut feature film Thunder Road.

Jim wrote, directed and starred in the film which was developed from his short film of the same name which won the grand Jury prize in Sundance.

He tells us about his journey from making shorts as a producer to doing it yourself, where the idea for Thunder Road came from and how he ended up the lead in his own short and subsequent feature film.

Thunder Road is a hilarious tragi-comedy which follows the life of Jim, a police officer on the verge of a mental breakdown following the death of his mother and the breakdown of his marriage. Thunder Road is released i the UK on Friday 31st May Having self-funded the film via Kickstarter, it’s a testament to independent film-making and is a real passion project for Jim. The film also has lots of interesting angles to explore such as how it has had the seal of approval from Bruce Springsteen whose song it is named after, how it deals with topical mental health including the stigma around men being able to show emotion and it’s comment on the current state of the American police force.

How to Make a Period Feature drama with James Kent director of The Aftermath starring Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgard Apr 08, 2019
    Show notes

Giles Alderson (The Dare) sits down with Film and TV director James Kent to chat his feature films Testament of Youth and The Aftermath

We start of by talking about Directors U.K. and how important and useful it is for filmmakers https://directors.uk.com/

The freedom in Documentary film-making that you can use in feature film or TV work as a director and when your in edit suite it is just you and the editor and you need to have got your coverage and material on set. With docs there is not often a story until you are in the edit

Making the leap from docs to TV and features. Working with actors. Respecting them. Working with young up and coming acting talent. And moving into directing features and how important rehearsal time is.

Making period drama The Aftermath. And how the actors have transformed into something else when in costume. A different character and they can come with pre-conceived ideas. Rehearsal can help over come this. And he gives some great Directing tips to work with actors on set.

Working with Will Smith on a Documentary. And watching Darren Aronofsky working was a education.

And shooting AMERICAN TV and the difference between U.K. TV.

Working with A list stars on The Aftermath with Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgard and feeling intimidated and shooting sex scenes

We chat Mother Father Son starring Billy Howle & Richard Gere which is OUT NOW on BBC2

He chats going from shorts and winning short film festivals like Virgin Media shorts and making more films from the prize money.

Then went onto make his debut feature In Another Life set in the Calais jungle while he waited for his other feature to happen . During this time he went out and learnt how to raise money and how to make a film from the ground up.

We discuss how he used his writing / directing fee from Eaten by Lions to finance his debut feature In Another Life. How he shots in the Calais jungle and recreated a set in Warrington to match. We discuss how it’s a privilege to make a film but you have to make sure your script is good enough and pay for script analysis to make it so.

How you should understand the finance process and how investors can make their money back. Having a one pager as well as full pack for your project and that the best people in the film industry have nothing to prove

How to make a road trip movie and working with actors on set and good techniques to do this .
