A new GAO report finds persistent vulnerabilities, shaped by uneven resources, aging systems, and limits on federal oversight. Here to break down the findings and recommendations is Dave Hinchman, director of information technology and cybersecurity at the Government Accountability Office.

For more than two decades, the Army Corps of Engineers has worked with partners to change how dams are operated, reducing flood risk and boosting local economies along the way. A new analysis says the returns are significant, but funding is now at risk. Jim Howe of The Nature Conservancy explains what the program actually does and what could be lost.

OPM details the changes for federal employees in Schedule Policy/Career Jun 10, 2026
    Show notes

More details are emerging about the practical implications of Schedule Policy/Career. New guidance from the Office of Personnel Management comes as agencies face a looming deadline to formally reclassify thousands of career federal employees … in effect, those reclassifications will strip workers of long-standing civil service protections. Here with the latest, Federal News Network’s Drew Friedman.

USPS axing its regulator is on the table, as it looks for ways to avoid running out of cash Jun 09, 2026
    Show notes

The Postal Service, on the verge of running out of cash early next year, is pricing out a wide range of possible reforms that, if passed by Congress, could address the agency’s long-term financial problems. One of them would be eliminating its regulatory agency, which must approve USPS requests to raise stamp prices. USPS expects to run out of cash early next year, but is relying on some extraordinary measures to push back that financial cliff. Federal News Network’s Jory Heckman has more.

First came telemedicine, now the Army medical logistics community is embracing telemaintenance for equipment Jun 09, 2026
    Show notes

As agencies look for ways to operate faster and more efficiently, The Army’s medical logistics community is embracing telemaintenence. It’s a bit like telemedicine, except for medical equipment. That’s meant the most experienced medical logisticians can now lend their expertise from a distance, in ways that let equipment get fixed in hours instead of days. Wes Ladlee is the chief of Army Medical Logistics Command’s maintenance support office. He talked about the improvements with Federal News Network’s Jared Serbu.

Agencies are under pressure to move quickly and enforce the rules, they still have to document the process, SBA may have missed a case Jun 09, 2026
    Show notes

A recent case involving the suspension of an 8(a) contractor is raising questions about how agencies document their decisions. An SBA appeals judge sent the case back, saying the record didn’t meet even basic requirements. So the issue, for now, isn’t whether the agency was right, it’s whether it showed its work clearly enough to justify the action. Zach Prince, partner at Haynes Boone, joins me now to talk through what happened.

    • After a marathon markup, the House has shaped its version of the NDAA, but the final outcome is still very much in play
    • Congress and multiple administrations keep coming back to one idea, use more fixed‑price contracts to control costs and improve outcomes. But putting that into practice is more complicated than it sounds
    • When agencies are under pressure to move quickly and enforce the rules, they still have to document how they make decisions, and one recent case suggests SBA didn’t

    Show notes

The House has moved its defense policy bill out of committee, mixing acquisition changes with broader policy fights. But with the Senate still to act and negotiations ahead, this version is far from final. And what shows up in this bill will shape how agencies buy, manage, and oversee work across government. We have the President of the Professional Services Council, Stephaie Kostro, here to walk us through the headlines.
