Organizations are discovering the remote worker they hired might not be the one doing the work Jul 31, 2026
    Show notes

Technology has made remote hiring easier and distributed work more common. It's also created new opportunities for fraud and misrepresentation. In some cases, organizations are discovering the person performing the work isn't necessarily the person they hired. Here to discuss what's at stake for government contractors is Jennifer Jackman, DC managing partner at Ice Miller.

AI is only as reliable as the information, some are learning this late Jul 31, 2026
    Show notes

Organizations are investing heavily in AI, but many still struggle with a basic question: can they trust the data feeding those systems? New research suggests governance, recordkeeping and information management may be lagging behind AI adoption. We'll explore what that means for federal managers with Robert Cruz, vice president for regulatory and information governance at Smarsh.

NIST’s Cyber AI Profile is designed to move agencies from abstract frameworks to real operational choices Jul 31, 2026
    Show notes

Federal agencies often struggle to turn high‑level guidance on AI and cybersecurity into everyday decisions about procurement, deployment and risk. NIST’s new Cyber AI Profile is meant to help close that gap by showing how AI risk management can work in practice. We’ll talk about how it’s intended to be used and what not to do with it, with Kat Megas, the program manager for cybersecurity, privacy and AI at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Today on the Federal Drive with Terry Gerton . . .

    • NIST’s Cyber AI Profile is designed to move agencies from abstract frameworks to real operational choices
    • Artificial intelligence is only as reliable as the information behind it. Many organizations are discovering they haven't paid enough attention to that part
    • When an organization hires someone, it assumes it knows who's doing the work. In some cases, that's becoming a risky assumption

Today on the Federal Drive with Terry Gerton . . . it's National Whistleblower Day

    • The United States has protected whistleblowers since the Continental Congress. Nearly 250 years later, advocates say insiders remain one of the government's most important tools for uncovering wrongdoing and emerging risks
    • If whistleblowers are essential to enforcement, government increasingly wants them to come forward. One recent case shows just how serious that effort has become
    • Encouraging people to speak up is one challenge. Protecting them afterward is another, especially when they work for government contractors
    • Good intentions, incentives and legal protections only matter if employees know where to turn when they uncover a problem. On National Whistleblower Day, we examine the protections, risks and realities of reporting wrongdoing inside government

Whether whistleblower programs succeed often depends on what happens after a disclosure is made. Congress is now considering changes aimed at strengthening protections for contractor employees who report wrongdoing tied to federal work. Joining me to discuss those proposals is Tom Devine, legal director of the Government Accountability Project.

The U.S. has protected whistleblowers since the Continental Congress, 250 years later insiders still matter the most Jul 30, 2026
    Show notes

National Whistleblower Day offers a chance to look at why whistleblower protections remain a bipartisan priority. From financial crime to artificial intelligence, policymakers increasingly depend on insiders to identify problems that regulators may never see from the outside. To help put that evolution in context, I'm joined by Stephen Kohn, chairman of the board of the National Whistleblower Center.

Throughout this National Whistleblower Day special we've been discussing why disclosures matter and how government encourages them. The final piece is understanding how the federal whistleblower system works in practice. For that perspective, I'm joined by Charles Baldis of the Office of Special Counsel.

David Markowitz, Army chief data officer gives an update on plans for the date operations center Jul 29, 2026
    Show notes

When the Army launched its data operations center in April, the goal was to create a centralized service that will reduce the burden on warfighters. Over the long term, A-DOC hopes to make it easier for warfighters to use artificial intelligence and machine learning tools by turning raw data into refined intelligence. For more on the service’s plans for the Army Data Operations Center, Federal News Network executive editor Jason Miller caught up with David Markowitz, the Army’s chief data and analytics officer at the recent AFCEA TechNet Cyber conference.
