    Intro:

A quick intro of hello’s that leads right into the show.

    W.I.N. #1:

A recent study determines that the #1 cause of obesity is eating too much and moving too little. Gary is annoyed that this still needs to be studied. This is a quick conversation about eating too much.

    W.I.N. #2:

Peter discusses self-optimizing as a potentially harmful thing. Sel-optimization can be exhausting at times and rigidity. Ultimately we decide that perfect is the enemy of good and that moderation is better.

    W.I.N. #3:

Sarah discusses crying and why it is a good thing. The conversation goes in many directions including Gary’s son crying during a baseball game and Sarah recently crying a lot. The article suggests the many benefits of crying, some of which Gary disputes. The end result is that crying is generally a good thing.

    W.I.N. #4:

The last W.I.N. is a study where they used topical heating cream as a performance enhancer. The results were minimally positive but the article still suggests that this is the secret to better exercise. The team disputes this article and the findings.

    Sleep Challenge:

We all discuss our experiences taping our mouths shut when we slept. Peter was a total fail and only lasted one night. Sarah had mixed results but nothing great. Gary had a very positive experience and continues to tape his mouth at night.

    Fan Feedback:

A special fan feedback segment to give more timely advice. Jay has a question about paying off a mortgage vs. investing the money. Tune in for the answer!

    Main Discussion:

Next, we dive into our topic of the day, “Spend More Time in the Hole.”

Our discussion in this episode revolves around doing hard things. Making yourself uncomfortable can make you a better person. Learn by failing over and over again. Easy choices, hard life: Hard choices, easy life. Be more mindful about all of your choices and try to make the harder and more uncomfortable choices.

The team also talks about uncomfortable things they have done recently and some they plan to do in the future.

012 | What Is Now | Fat That Kills, Unconscious Wakefulness, & Detox Diets May 06, 2021
    Show notes

    Show Summary:

In this week’s What Is Now (W.I.N.) episode, we discuss:

    • The deadly effects of unconscious wakefulness.
    • Fat that kills.
    • What’s the deal with detox diets?

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here
    Intro:

Gary tries a new dramatic intro and it fails big time. Sarah and Gary discuss a pizza night success. No cheese pizza is delicious, costs less, and has fewer calories!

    W.I.N. #1:

Peter directs a conversation about the detrimental effect of visceral fat. Weight around your belly makes you at a higher risk for heart disease. We also discuss how awful the BMI is as an indicator of health. Using the BMI, Peter is considered obese even though he has less than 10% body fat. The key takeaway is that stomach fat is a good indicator of underlying visceral fat and can be deadly.

    W.I.N. #2:

Gary leads a discussion about unconscious wakefulness and how the results of bad sleep can be deadly, especially in women. The team talks about ways to improve sleep to avoid unconscious wakefulness. The most important thing you can do to improve your sleep is to reduce noise and light pollution.

    W.I.N. #3:

Sarah read a great article about detox diets. After lots of jokes, the article and hosts decide that detox diets are useless and encourage people to adopt a long-term sustainable healthy diet. A detox may be a way to start, but it’s not sustainable.
