With Deep Caring, Respect & A Relentless Curiosity Luis Maimoni, LMFT Helps Kids & Families Root Out Pain Aug 14, 2019
    Show notes

Luis Maimoni is a bilingual (Spanish/English) therapist in the outpatient department of a community mental health agency in Gardena, CA. His clients are children with problems at school, at home, with friends, or in the community. They may avoid family and friends, get in fights, purposefully harm themselves, or have a hard time getting things done. He collaborates with these children and their families to find and treat the root cause. Although there are many clinical aspects to his work, the most important things he provides are a listening mind, relentless curiosity, deep caring and respect, and a willingness to be his authentic self. He is trained in several Evidence Based Practices, including Positive Parenting Program (Triple P), Managing and Adapting Practice (MAP), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). As Board Secretary of The Guidance Center, he is able to directly support the effort to erase the stigma associated with mental heath, and advocate for clients and providers. The Guidance Center provides mental health services to over 3,000 children and families each year in the communities of Long Beach, Compton, San Pedro, and Avalon.

Prior to working in mental health, Luis's career focused on sales and marketing. Which is how we met incidentally. For over 20 years, he lead teams that created engagement with customers, clients, and communities via highly targeted content and platforms. We focus on the children and parents here today though. Enjoy!

In this episode Peter & Luis discuss:

6:16- Why do you think it's taking so long to break down the stigmas?

6:40- On mental health within the stoic culture of many immigrant parents

8:53- Kids on the spectrum usually have a pretty tough time opening up; what do you do to break through to them? Ref: Jennifer Hartstein interview

12:28- How are you framing ADHD to kids? How do you fight the "you are broken" residuals?

13:05- On parenting an ADHD child

She has since continued on to become a best selling & critically acclaimed author, a James Beard nominated food writer, has written for Medium magazine, is a serial entrepreneur and consultant, an idea sailor, a Mom, has remained a fast-talker and oh, and she has ADHD too. Allison is full of great perspective and advice. Happy to visit with my ol'pal here today. Enjoy!

Diagnosed with ADHD at age 23, Jonathan has earned his BA in Criminal Justice and a Masters in School Psychology. His first career was in Juvenile corrections, but for the past six years he has changed things to become a school psychologist. During his tenure, he has implemented precise academic & behavior systems, (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support+ADHD= MTSS on Steroids), to ensure he & his fellow educators are providing adequate support for all types of students. His work has focused on creating data systems where educators & helpers can use the data to guide their instructional practices while providing targeted interventions for the students who need it, (Academic and Behavior). The data system gives educators access to students' demographics, academic present levels, (based on formative assessments), and behavior needs, with just a click of a button. In addition, all the information is presented in one document so that the data can be sorted for further analyses. The staff has fully embraced it, and this has led to an overall improvement of student's academics, behavior and social/ emotional knowledge. Recently earning his doctorate in Education Learning, Jonathan's life is now dedicated to helping all students become fearless and courageous, at any moment. Enjoy!

Pete White was born and raised in the North East of England. At age 21 he joined the Royal Air Force. At 22 years old he was eagerly on his way to Afghanistan. Things took an unexpected turn there for him. He found himself in a bad spot- suffering from the crippling effects of PTSD and severe depression. After 7 years of that suffering, and a lot of medication & therapy, he was medically discharged from the military. Still mentally unwell and unsure of what he was going to do in his new life as a civilian, he made the tough decision to put his past behind him, take control and build the life that he wanted to live.

Obsessed with the idea of personal success in every area of life, he developed methods and habits to channel his experience to benefit himself and others, creating his own version of success using his super-alert ADHD brain. Pete now spends his time helping other people to overcome their personal challenges, put their negative circumstances behind them, and create their own idea of success. He has recently written a book about his experiences named "From The Bottom Of The Barrel". He generously shares his story with us here today. Enjoy!

In this episode Peter & Pete discuss:

    2:16- Intro & welcome Pete!

2:58- So, what led you to joining the military?

World Traveler, Global Author, Creative Coach & Like Minded ADHD Man Dave Fox Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

Dave Fox has been all around the globe. Tunisia, Northern Africa, Norway, the UK you name it! He was born in the states, but at age eight he moved to England with his family. That move at such a young age triggered something that permanently changed his life. From that age forward he's been obsessed with learning about foreign cultures. He spent two years of high school in Oslo, taught English in Turkey, traveled independently, then worked, edited and wrote for renowned travel guru Rick Steves for sixteen years, (which is no small feat if you're familiar with Rick's work)! For many years, Dave's career focus was on Europe, but things took a dramatic turn in 2008 when he went on what was supposed to be a one-time, one-week vacation in Vietnam. He felt so mesmerized by the frenetic pulse of Ho Chi Minh City – or Saigon as it's still casually called – that he moved there. It turns out that Saigon works out well for the ADHD brain because he & his wife still live there! We talk about it all here today. Enjoy!

In this episode Peter & Dave discuss:

    0:58- Intro & welcome Dave!

1:50- When travel became an addiction for you- did you embrace it, or try to ignore it?

3:00- What took you to England for the first time? ref: Rick Steves

6:10- Amidst the constant craziness, stimulation and beauty of daily life in Saigon, how do you focus down and get work done.. especially when it's all around you like that?

12:32- Do you travel outside of Vietnam very often? Tell us about your weekends.

14:00- What other destinations have you fallen in love with?

15:08- How can people find out more about you and your Writing, Life Coaching, Classes, Books, etc? www.GlobeJotting.com Twitter: @GlobeJotter FB: @GlobeJotting INSTA: @GlobeJotting YouTube: GlobeJotting

Get Up! Talking ADHD & Good Mental Health w/ Rockstars Shinedown Jun 05, 2019
    Show notes

I have been listening to our guests for well more than a decade! They have been part of my playlist since the summer of 2006 when their music helped me run the NYC Marathon faster than I ever had before. You surely know their music too, even if you've never heard the name Shinedown! Their song "Get Up" is the most inspiring, straight to the point, song I've ever heard that challenges the stigmas of talking honestly about mental health. They are some of the hardest working Artists in the world, so I was honored when they agreed to spend some time with us here today, helping to grow & inspire more honest conversations about mental health. Enjoy!

In this episode Peter, Brent and Eric discuss:

1:08- Intro and welcome Brent Smith and Eric Bass!

2:00- After 136 shows spanning 48,000 miles, you guys were labeled The Hardest Working Artists of 2018! That's a ton of work & a healthy mantle! How do you make sure that you are taking care of yourselves mentally?

4:56- Peter on working to relax ref: The New Yorker cartoon

5:37- On loving what you do & being driven

6:10- On the importance of surrounding yourself with good people & a good support system

9:49- Brent, you wrote "Get Up" for Eric. The majority of folks don't know how to talk to a friend who is, or might be struggling. What did you learn from writing this song?

14:08- "You are not going to be defined by your failures. You are going to be defined by the fact that you refuse to give up- no matter what" -Brent Smith

16:05- Peter on the importance of Music, and how music will pull you through ref: "I Dare You" ref: Peter gets arrested for exercising, makes news.

18:24- What is it about music, not books, movies, tv, etc, but music that people always credit with bringing them through a rough spell, or helping them remember a moment in time, etc. Why?

20:52- Talk to me about the stigma around mental health. Finally there is a solid movement- between you guys, people like Erik Kussin who have started WeAreAllALittleCrazy.org, etc. What can people do to help grow the national/international conversation about mental health? ref: Erik Kussin's FTN interview here #SameHere
