You’ve most likely never heard of my good friend and amazing musician & eco-activist Gabe Dominguez but that’s ok. He’s co-founder of San Francisco’s Bicycle Music Festival, leader of Fantastic Whup-Music Outfit Shake Your Peace!, one half of the gorgeous folk duo Tiny Home and most recently the visionary behind Ecotopia Now! a world changing - eco literacy program for Utah’s high schools and colleges, but that’s really just part of his story.
Gabe has an articulate, urgent, and ultimately beautiful vision for our future which he has strived to head towards for the better part of his adult life. In this deep and fluid conversation we explore some of the powerful ideas Gabe has suggesting eco-friendly alternatives to the dominant culture, as well as hear some of his joyful music and reminisce about being a creative activist in the bay area in the 2000’s. You’re not gonna want to skip this episode!
Jay Cobb Anderson is a prolific Portland, OR based songwriter and guitarist best know for his work as co-founder of the renowned Indie-Folk-Rock band Fruition. From humble beginnings and a chance meeting amongst kids in their early twenties, Fruition rose from a bunch a wide-eyed burgeoning buskers, itching to play for whoever would listen, to a power house of rock and roll troubadours, conquering the open road and delighting audiences around the country year after year. As the members matured and developed over time, as did their music, their lyrics and their connection.
Jay also plays in the incredible band TK and The Holy Know Nothings and has released two solo albums under his own name. It was a pleasure to get to catch up with my bud Jay and rap with him about life, music and what he’s learned so far!
Stanton Moore is an anomaly. Most musicians would only hope to have the success he’s had as to withstand over 20 years of lucrative world-touring with New Orleans funk-jam band Galactic. However that is just the tip of the iceberg for Stanton. As a performer he’s played with a who’s who of all-star contemporary and legendary musicians from New Orleans and beyond. As an educator he’s had articles published in every reputable drumming magazine, been featured on the cover of all, has taught clinics around the globe and has developed his very own online drum academy. As a band leader he’s put out multiple releases under his own name and played on countless releases by others, and as an entrepreneur he’s developed his own line of cymbals for Bosphorus and Sabian (Crescent Cymbals), and now co-owns the legendary New Orleans music venue Tipitina’s along with his bandmates from Galactic.
Stanton Moore is one of the more accomplished and driven musicians out there and there’s no telling what many more great things he will do. It was a pleasure to get to sit down with him in January on Jam Cruise and hear about all his on-going projects and gain a little insight into how he keeps everything up and running and at such a high level. Please enjoy!
Leslie Mendelson’s on-going journey as an artist is a testament to her undeniable talent, perseverance, and mastery of her craft. She had a storied start to her career in the 2000’s with support of major label budgets and grammy award winning producers. This garnered critically acclaimed grammy nominated material of her own, but it also took her down a path where she dealt with disappointment, disillusionment, and death.
Over a decade later her career is thriving and she is just as comfortable in a singer/songwriter solo setting as she is performing alongside jam band luminaries like Steve Kimock or Bob Weir. Earlier this month (5/19) she opened up for the Who at Madison Square Garden and she is days away from meeting a kickstarter goal to fund her fully finished new record “If You Can’t Say Anything Nice”. As always, I had a blast chatting with Leslie and I think you will enjoy the fruit of our conversation.
Zach Gill is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter best known for his decades of touring as co-founder of the band ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra), as well as his years of traversing the world as a member of Jack Johnson’s band. Zach is a creative, playful and articulate character who has also released a handful of solo records including 2008’s Zach Gill’s Stuff and 2017’s Life in the Multiverse. This is a unique episode as Ezra stepped in to fill the drum chair in ALO in the winter of 2017 (which continues presently) so what we have is an intimate, thoughtful and light-hearted conversation amongst friends and bandmates.
Rob Barraco is an incredibly talented keyboardist best known for his decades of longstanding affiliations and collaborations with Grateful Dead Alumni. He was playing in the Zen Tricksters in the 1990’s when a series of fateful events caused their CD to wind up in the stereo of Phil Lesh who then summoned Barraco for an audition. He would go on to play in The Phil Lesh Quintet, aka “The Q”, one of the most revered iterations of Phil Lesh & Friends also featuring Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring and John Molo. He had stints with post GD groups The Other Ones and The Dead and is now a member of Dark Star Orchestra and California Kind among many other projects and collaborations. It was a pleasure to sit down with Rob and get to hear his lighthearted and colorful take on his decades playing amongst Rock N’ Roll icons.
19 - Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood) Putting In The Work
Apr 17, 2018
Billy Martin is a "renaissance artist" in the truest sense. For nearly 30 years he's been the drummer/percussionist with the legendary avant jazz-groove trio Medeski Martin & Wood and his singular and infectious approach to beat making has influenced scores of musicians. He's also a visual artist, writer, label owner (Amulet Records), film-maker, composer, world class collaborator and highly regarded as an influential teacher who's released instructional or self proclaimed "anti-instructional" content (DVD's and books) to inspire and educate musicians. Billy has been one of my all time favorite musicians and a huge personal influence on me. It was a pleasure to sit down and have him on the show! Enjoy!
Nathan Moore is a man who occupies many worlds and wears many hats. In my humble opinion, he is one of the finest songwriters of our time and his ongoing career has spanned many projects and phases that most artists could spend a lifetime on. Be it the years he spent touring with his indie-acoustic band Thamusemeant, the contagious unbound Rock N’ Roll you can see him creating with Surprise Me Mr. Davis, the multi-media extravaganza and unconventional touring that was Hippie Fiasco, the electronic psych-folk experimentation of his latest collaboration The Whole Other, the pirate radio station he ran for years in his basement, or just him onstage alone with a guitar, a harmonica, four chords and the truth; Nathan’s essence shines through in any setting where he finds himself, and he, nor we, never seem to know where he will find himself next.
It was a sincere pleasure and joy to sit down with my good friend Nathan a little after midnight and riff about his unfolding journey as an artist, process as a songwriter, child hood memories, God, and much more. Please enjoy!
As I mention in the introduction my band Magic In The Other has until 12/7/2017 to hit our goal through our Kickstarter campaign to fund the production and recording of our debut album! If this podcast is bringing any value to your life and you've wondered how you could give back, I’d sincerely appreciate your support on backing (and spreading the word) on this project that will help further the development of my art. Thank you so much for your consideration as it means a lot to me! - Ezra
Click here for a very entertaining video I made talking about the project!
Swedish born, New Orleans based “triple-threat” songwriter/guitarist/singer Anders Osborne has been a force to be reckoned with for nearly 30 years. When I watch Anders on stage I get the impression that he is playing music like his life depends on it, and I have a feeling it’s because he is. He’s the kind of versatile, raw and invigorating performer who sounds like he plays the truth.
In his 3 decades as a professional musician he has toured the country (and beyond) countless times, has presently put out 15 records under his own name and played on numerous others, he has appeared on Grammy winning Albums (Keb Mo) and written #1 hit songs (Tim McGraw) and has collaborated with a cast of musicians that include Toots & The Maytals, The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Stanton Moore, North Mississippi Allstars, Warren Haynes and many many others.
He has also battled alcoholism and achieved sobriety, and has now founded a program called Send Me A Friend which helps musicians and others who work in the music industry get free support to stay clean at work. It was also clear after talking more with Anders that he has a deep spiritual connection that seeps into his life and music and he takes what he does very seriously and puts his all in everyday (and night). We drop in deep quick and stay the course. Enjoy the ride!
Ezra’s Note: I should mention that in the intro to this episode I mention that my family has been under evacuation from our home in the recent North Bay Wildfires. While this crisis is still ongoing and so many are in need of help and homes, I am grateful to report that since the recording of this introduction we are now safely back home with no damage.

16 - The Subtle Magic of Bonnie Paine (of Elephant Revival)
Oct 03, 2017
At a given show with her band Elephant Revival, Vocalist and Multi-Instrumentalist Bonnie Paine can be heard playing washboard, djembe, saw, cello, stomp box, singing, or any other instrument, yet she is a musician who's heart tends to take the forefront of whatever music she is engaged in at the time. From modest roots starting in 2006 as a Folk-World-Americana collective of friends from Nederland, CO, Elephant Revival's steadfast work ethic, near-constant touring schedule and commitment to make authentic and genuine music has earned them an ever growing fanbase and many accolades in the industry; earning spots in major festivals throughout the country, headlining venues the likes of Red Rocks, and being featured in the New York Times, NPR, Guardian UK, and many other publications.
In addition to creating a unique blend of native and non-native original indie folk music that connects deeply with their listeners, Elephant Revival combines their musical efforts with endeavors to aid many humanitarian, environmental and social justice causes, working with groups like Conscious Alliance, Calling All Crows, Trees Water & People, and others.
It was a real pleasure to chat with Bonnie who spoke candidly about her concerns and hopes for the state of the world, shared childhood stories including how a family tragedy lead to a more musical life for her and her siblings, revealed a dramatic tale of Elephant Revival's recent near-death bus fire, and much more. Please Enjoy!
Since the early 1990's, guitarist/singer/songwriter Neal Casal has forged a career that has traversed much ground far and wide. While he is currently best known for his tenure in The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Casal was also a key player in Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, has released 12 solo albums under his own name, is a member of the contemporary supergroup Hard Working Americans (featuring Todd Snider and members of Widespread Panic and Great American Taxi), has moonlighted with the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, leads an improvisational band called Circles Around The Sun which was selected to compose music to be played at The Grateful Dead's 50th Anniversary Fare Thee Well Concerts, and has been featured on hundreds of records. He's also a really nice guy.
It was a pleasure to have a laid back chat with Neal and hear him reflect on the past stages of his musical journey, talk about why things are now better than they've ever been in his relationship to his craft, and understand the obstacles and challenges that pushed him to be the best he can be. You can check out Neal's various projects here.
Russ Lawton is a Vermont based drummer best known for his years of work as the syncopated, driving engine behind the Trey Anastasio Band, whom he has been performing and collaborating with since it's inception in 1998. Now In his early 60's, Russ has had a fruitful career as a working musician for decades prior to ever meeting Trey, and his relentless work ethic continues today. In addition to touring with TAB, he co-leads and tours with the band Soule Monde along with TAB keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, he is in demand session player in the New England Area, he writes, records and produces his own pop/rock songs, teaches drums, and continues to keep up a disciplined practice routine after many years in the saddle.
I first met Russ about 15 years ago when I asked him to my home in Vermont to give me a drum lesson and I hadn't seen him since until we recently reconnected in California! In this episode Russ talks about some of his early experiences as a drummer in various bands pre-Trey Band, as well as what it's been like working and collaborating with Trey, how he stays healthy on the road, insights into his longevity and continued success, and much more! Please Enjoy!
San Diego’s Alfred Howard is a very dynamic character. He is best know for his involvement in a burgeoning music scene in San Diego as he is currently a primary lyricist, songwriter and producer in 8 different bands including The Heavy Guilt, Birdy Bardot, Rebecca Jade and The Cold Fact, Dani Bell and The Tarantist and The Midnight Pine, which are all housed under The Redwoods Music label which Howard is a founder and co-owner of. For years before the record label he was traveling as a lyricist and percussionist and singer/rapper in the K23 Orchestra until a case of chronic Lime’s Disease made this difficult.
Howard is also a prolific writer and blogger and has a knack for blending humor and profundity in social media posts like no other I’ve seen. His book “The Autobiography of No One” is a highly entertaining and thoughtful collection of autobiographical essays and blog posts speaking of his experiences in life as a touring musician, a record store clerk, a young black man in America, and much more.
I was very happy to get to spend some time chatting with Alfred where we discuss some thoughts on the current political climate, he shares a new spoken word piece, and we talk about his role as a lyricist with so many different artists. There is also some bonus content at the end of the episode that I think you will enjoy! The Redwoods Music Label is currently involved in fundraising to put out 5 new records. 12 - Jennifer Hartswick: (Trey Anastasio Band) "You Are The Answer!"
Aug 02, 2017
For the better part of two decades Jennifer Hartswick has held tenure in the Trey Anastasio Band (of Phish fame) providing powerhouse vocals and impeccable trumpet playing. When she first met Trey and started collaborating she was just a teenager and self described "jazz nerd" coming out of the backwoods of Vermont. Since that time she has become one of the most respected, in-demand and busiest musicians on the jam-band and festival scene, guesting with a plethora of bands including Phish, Umphrey's Mcgee, Soulive, The Motet, The 9th Power, String Cheese Incident, and a slew of others. In addition to being an in-demand supporting musician she also fronts her own band The Jennifer Hartswick band with members of The 9th Power and recently recorded her upcoming record with the highly acclaimed contemporary jazz bassist Christian McBride.
In this conversation we talk about what it was like for Jen first joining TAB and immediately heading out on the road as such a young women, how she maintains her stamina with her busy lifestyle, her illuminating thoughts on preserving one's unique authenticity in this world, and much more! Please Enjoy!

Hailing from the North East Kingdom of Vermont, Kalmia Traver (Rubblebucket, Kalbells) has spent the last ten years touring relentlessly and co-leading the highly acclaimed Brooklyn based electro-indie-dance-pop band Rubblebucket. In a relatively short span Rubblebucket have put out ten LP's/EP's, worked with Grammy Award winning producers (John Congelton), and have been featured on late night TV (Jimmy Kimmel). Kalmia is a powerhouse on the alto and bari sax, has a highly unique and skillful singing voice, and her exuberance and energy as a performer is unparalleled. In addition Kalmia has just released her first full length record "Ten Flowers" under her new solo project moniker Kalbells and it has already received the attention of NPR Music and many other reputable publications. As a contemporary artist in NYC, Kalmia Traver has collaborated with the likes of QuestLove, Tuneyards, Marco Benevento, Angelique Kidjo, The Arcade Fire and many others.
Kalmia's life took a difficult turn in 2013 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and subsequently fought and eventually won a long battle and is now fully cancer free! I also have had a long time friendship and personal relationship with Kalmia as we met in 2002 as music students at The University of Vermont and have been in contact ever since.
In this episode we get deep and talk about Kalmia's life and spirit post cancer, how her solo project came about, how to stay positively engaged in a troubling world, shaping energy fields (I told you it got deep) and much more!! Please Enjoy!
Marco Benevento has been making waves in the experimental/jam/rock music scene since roughly 1999. As a sideman, he's played with some of the best players out there today including the likes of Dan Auerbach, Trey Anastasio, Matt Chamberlain, Joe Russo, Billy Martin, John Medeski, Mike Gordon, Skerik, Stanton Moore and many many others. As a band leader and composer he has released 7 records to date and is the owner and co-founder of his own label, the Royal Potato Family. As a collaborator he is notorious in being part of some of the baddest bands from his early days with The Benevento Russo Duo to present times playing keys in Joe Russo's Almost Dead, and holds chairs with Garage A Trois, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, Bustle in your Hedgerow and many others. Marco has a sound and personality unique to himself which comes through loud and clear in his music. He is one of my favorites and it was a pleasure to have him on the show. Please enjoy!
Joe Craven is one of those humans who seemingly knows no bounds. Truly a jack of all trades, he embodies many roles in life; a virtuosic multi-instrumentalist with no formal music training, an award winning music educator and camp director, a larger than-life colorful festival emcee, composer, band leader, collaborator in many different projects, actor, visual artist, museum curator, self proclaimed "fashion insultant", the list goes on...
Craven has performed and recorded music with the likes of Stephane Grappelli, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Alison Brown, David Lindley, Howard Levy and many others. But perhaps more impressive is his 60 years of wisdom and insight he has accrued learning how to fully embody music and conquer the usual divide between instrument and self. Needless to say it was a pleasure and an honor talking to him and there is much to be gleamed from our conversation. Please Enjoy!
I believe Brad Barr is one of the more unique musical voices of our time. A musician who truly knows no bounds, his openness, curiosity and deep listening abilities have accompanied him around the world many times over in his 20+ years of touring and music making. Brad spent the better part of the 90's and 2000's tirelessly traversing the country with his brother Andrew Barr (drums) and good friend Marc Friedman (bass) with an exceptional trio known as The Slip based out of Providence, RI. As their song-based but highly improvisational music organically evolved over the years from a Scofield-esque jazzy-jam band, to a bonafide indie rock power trio (with plenty of other territory covered in between), they developed a strong and extremely enthusiastic fanbase that on any given night were just as excited about the band's improvisational risks as the rewards. The Slip eventually teamed up with the beloved folk-singer Nathan Moore and keyboard whiz Marco Benevento to highlight some of their more old fashioned Rock N' Roll leanings in the festival favorite super group Surprise Me Mr. Davis.
For the better part of the last decade Brad and his brother Andrew, now based in Montreal, have been putting out some of their most focused and refined music yet in an outfit they created along with harpist Sarah Page called The Barr Brothers. With Brad's lyrics and songwriting more at the forefront than ever and three Secret City Records releases under their belt, The Barr Brothers are quickly and steadily building immense international acclaim.
I have a unique relationship with Brad (as well as his brother Andrew) as he has been one of the most pivotal and influential musicians in my life since I was 14 years old. Besides musicians that I play with regularly, I believe I have seen Brad and Andrew play live more times than any other group of musicians in my life.
In this episode Brad and I discuss how being a father has altered his life and music, ways in which his perception of "World Music" has evolved, his elusive songwriting (non) process, and ponder why I can't find a good bagel in Northern California, among other things. Enjoy!
07 - Steve Poltz: Troubadour For Life
Jun 19, 2017
Steve Poltz is a larger-than-life singer/songwriter, storyteller and entertainer who has been asserting his rugged independence and carrying out his unique personal vision for nearly 3 decades. He has seen accolades come and go in the music industry as a founding member of the San Diego 90's indie-rock-folk-punk band The Rugburns who developed a cult following, as well as achieving huge commercial success for his 1996 worldwide smash hit "You Were Meant For Me" which he co-wrote with Jewel. But Poltz has never been one to let current trends alter his quirky and sometimes crass, as well as heartfelt and honest song writing style as a solo artist, slow down his proliferation of songs, records, videos, blogging or touring, or dissuade him to relentlessly travel the world on his own terms, quietly and steadily accumulating a loyal base of raving fans and friends far and wide. And did I mention he's one of my favorites? In this in-depth and intimate conversation, Poltz shares many insights he has developed on the music industry over the years, thoughts on social media and connecting with an audience, reveals some anecdotes about times when he took his performance sense of humor perhaps a bit too far, and describes his experience of having a stroke on stage and how that indirectly led him to a new-found appreciation of the music of The Grateful Dead. Please Enjoy!
BONUS CLIP: For the Dead Head listeners there are a few extra minutes of bonus audio I omitted for this episode of us dorking out more on The Dead and the meaning of some of Robert Hunter's lyrics you can listen to by clicking here!
06 - Practice Less, Learn More: How I Completely Transformed How I Practice For The Better
Jun 05, 2017
Discipline and consistency have been a part of my practice routine for many years, however it wasn't until recently that I realized how much time I was wasting by not streamlining my practice methods! In this episode I delve deep into personal experience as I recount my history getting into drumming, some of my past struggles with how I practiced, and share some of the techniques and methods I now use to consistently have the most efficient and focused practice sessions that I've ever had.
Whether you are a drummer, another kind of instrumentalist, or someone who just wants to have focused consistent results improving themselves in any area, I think there is a lot to take away here. But please let's continue this conversation and share your thoughts with me!
Big shout out to the Drummer's Resource Podcast with Nick Ruffini and Benny Greb, both of whom were indispensable to helping me discover, adopt and implement many of the topics I discuss here, and aiding me directly and indirectly on my personal journey.
05 - Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz (Part 2): Setting Up The Context For Success
May 30, 2017
In the second installment of my conversation with Lebo we get deep. In this dialogue we cover lots of ground including the delicate nature of relating to bandmates and your own experience of playing music, how Lebo balances touring with family life, the realization that not all music is made for everyone, growth and failure, and much more. Enjoy!
You can listen to the first part (episode 01) here.
04 - Reed Mathis: Telling The Reckless Truth Since 1994
May 24, 2017
Bass player extraordinaire, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and band leader Reed Mathis is a true artist, whom unapologetically has much to say both with his instrument and without.
Reed spent 15 years exploring the outer realms of improvisation and composition with progressive jazz/rock/groove band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey which he co-founded in 1994 with pianist Brian Haas. Reed went on to join the San Francisco jam/rock band Tea Leaf Green with whom he also composed and produced records for over a 6+ year tenure. He's also toured and recorded with many artists as a sideman including Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Steve Kimock, Marco Benevento, Robert Walter, Page McConnell (Phish) and many many others.
He now leads his own group, Electric Beethoven which takes Beethoven's symphonies, expands the forms, adds improvisation and presents them in a Rock n' Roll electric dance context.
Reed holds a wealth of musical and historical knowledge. In this episode we discuss many different topics including how he approaches improvisation with his band, how Beethoven's music can be traced to New Orleans music and the Roots of Rock n' Roll, why he has at times struggled fitting into the Grateful Dead music playing scene, and much more. Please enjoy!

03 - John Craigie: He'll Make You Laugh, He'll Make You Cry; Just Give Him Two Minutes to Write the Song
May 15, 2017
John Craigie is a contemporary singer songwriter and folk troubadour who has been compared to the likes of John Prine, Woody Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Pete Seeger, as well as the comic sensibility of Mitch Hedberg or Jerry Seinfeld. He has a distinct performance style that blends often profound and sometimes humorous songs with expertly crafted and highly entertaining storytelling. The result is a very engaging and original performer who can make you laugh, cry, think, and celebrate life in the course of one set.
This was a really fun conversation (which we recorded while John was driving to the next gig, naturally) where we discuss John's perspectives on touring, "selling out the closet", engaging with post election Trump supporters, integrating storytelling in his performances, and much more. Please Enjoy!
02 - Melvin Seals: Keeper of the Flame
May 08, 2017
For over 15 years Melvin Seals provided the harmonic backbone of the beloved Jerry Garcia Band, illuminating the bands sounds with his exciting and soulful gospel-influenced organ playing. Before and during that tenure he also had a diverse career playing with greats such as Elvin Bishop, Chuck Berry, and even a stint on Broadway.
Not long after Garcia's passing in 1995, Seal's was invited and agreed to reform a version of the band with The Garcia band's long time bass player John Kahn. When Kahn died shortly after that, Melvin decided to reform the band as JGB which he has led ever since. Melvin Seals and JGB continuing to explore the vast repertoire that Garcia had brought to his band over decades, performing fresh interpretations and arrangements, yet keeping the same spirit alive that Garcia has left behind.
In this conversation we discuss how Melvin got into playing music, some humorous stories of his first encounters with Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead scene, and how he is able to keep the music alive and thriving after so many years. Please Enjoy!
01 - Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz (Part 1): The Roots of a Rock N' Roll Adventure
Apr 25, 2017
In the very first episode of The Ezra Lipp Hour (More or Less), I speak with guitarist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz. Lebo is best known as the guitarist and co-founder of the Bay Area based rock/jam band Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) but he is also an accomplished and ubiquitous side man having performed with a slew of incredible artists and bands including Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh & Friends, Melvin Seals, Brokedown in Bakersfield, Brett Dennen, Bill Kreutzmann, Steve Kimock and many more. He also has his own band Lebo & Friends.
In the first part of this conversation (Part 2 will be a little down the road) we speak of the roots of his musical journey including the formation of ALO with childhood friends Zach Gill and Steve Adams in junior high. We trace Lebo's life trajectory of friendship and music and the different paths took and lessons learned to get to where Lebo is now in his career. We also discuss the unifying links between Donald Trump, Jesus, Hitler and James Brown. Please enjoy!
