Diabetes Diet: Is DASH or Whole Food Plant-Based Best? | Dr. Thomas Campbell Feb 18, 2025
    Show notes

What is the best diet for someone with diabetes?

Dr. Thomas Campbell shares his research comparing the DASH Diet and a whole food plant-based diet. Their effects on insulin resistance and blood sugar levels are then examined.

Although both diets showed improvement, the participants experienced superior results while eating the WFPB diet. Dr. Campbell explains why when he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast.

    In the Interview:

Plant-Based Diet for Diabetes Management: The interview emphasizes the effectiveness of a whole food plant-based diet in managing diabetes, contrasting it with other dietary approaches like the keto diet, which merely suppresses symptoms rather than addressing underlying issues.

Influence of Family Legacy: Dr. Campbell reflects on the profound influence of his father, Dr. T. Colin Campbell who co-authored The China Study, on his career choice in medicine, emphasizing that his motivation stemmed from passion rather than pressure.

Challenges in Medical Nutrition Education: He highlights a significant gap in knowledge among medical professionals regarding diet and its effects on health, particularly in treating conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Social Norms and Health: Dr. Campbell discusses how social norms contribute to unhealthy eating habits, making it difficult for individuals to change their diets despite knowing the health risks associated with poor nutrition.

Patient Education and Openness: Dr. Campbell stresses the importance of patient openness to dietary changes and the need for healthcare providers to engage in meaningful conversations rather than overwhelming patients with information.

Find out as leading nutrition researcher and author Dr. Neal Barnard joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast.

    - In This Interview -

Definition of Processed Foods: Dr. Barnard explains the difference between processed food and ultra-processed foods.

Sodium and Dairy: The discussion touches on the dangers of added sodium in processed foods and the health implications of dairy consumption.

Practical Tips: Dr. Barnard offers practical advice for incorporating healthier foods into your diet, such as stocking up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to encourage healthier eating habits.

Chuck also has details on a study tracking the outrageous number of advertisements for unhealthy food that are shown during football games.

This episode is sponsored by The Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, which supports organizations like the Physicians Committee that carry on Greg's passion and love for animals through rescue efforts, veganism, and wildlife conservation.

Foods That Help Prevent Prostate Cancer | Dr. Neal Barnard Jan 30, 2025
    Show notes

Learn the foods that can help prevent prostate cancer and boost your digestive health.

Dr. Neal Barnard joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Live to discuss the dietary factors that may influence your cancer risk.

    In this interview:

Dairy Consumption: Studies from Harvard indicate that men who consume milk have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, regardless of whether it's low-fat or whole milk. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in milk is a potential contributor to this increased risk.

Meat Consumption: A diet high in red meat, such as hamburgers and fries, is also linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer.

Protective Foods: Foods rich in lycopene, particularly tomato products, and soy products are associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer. Soy does not cause breast cancer in men and may actually reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Impact of Lifestyle Changes: Making dietary changes after a prostate cancer diagnosis can be beneficial in preventing recurrence. Dr. Barnard references Dean Ornish's studies that suggest dietary modifications can positively impact men with prostate cancer.

Green Tea: Dr. Barnard notes that while green tea may have some protective effects, it is not a substitute for other dietary changes.

Sugar: Sugar, particularly from dairy products, is discussed as a potential risk factor for prostate cancer.

Overall Health: Dr. Barnard emphasizes that many men with prostate cancer do not die from it but rather from other health issues, such as heart disease, often linked to poor dietary choices.
