The Cloudcast #317 - The State of the Serverless Ecosystem Oct 20, 2017
    Show notes

Brian talks with Ryan Brown (@ryan_sb, Sr. Software Engineer @Ansible, Author of ServerlessCode) about the overall state of the Serverless community after the recent ServerlessConf 2017 NYC, the breadth of focus areas for developers and business, the ways to integrate serverless into existing applications, and areas for newbies to the space to get started.

    Show Notes:
Topic 1 - You’ve been heavily involved in Serverless since the very days, working on things like the ServerlessCode site as a side project. How are you seeing the community evolve?
    • The DevOps crowd was there
Lots of “is it NoOps or Not?” discussions
    • Nobody is actually NoOps. There’s a common understanding (underlined by people like Charity Majors) that someone in your org is always responsible for stuff working, or else you die.
    • DiffOps is one term that encompasses the “you have responsibility, but one of your responsibilities is to farm out as much as is reasonable to your provider”
    Any viable open-source elements emerging?
    • Lots of toy-ish “oh you can run FaaS on k8s” around, but when you get serious:
    • Serverless Framework/Zappa/Sparta/Apex
    • OpenWhisk
Some VC funding, but nothing massive yet
    • IOPipe raised at least one round
    • Serverless has a spot in the HeavyBit, and some funding
    • Stackery has about 2 million in funding
    • The real “VC’s” in serverless tooling are the cloud mega-providers (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) and the biggest teams I know of are all subteams there
How many customers vs. vendors at the event?
    • Basically 2x the first ServerlessConf, up to 450/460 attendees

Topic 2 - You gave a talk called “Harmonizing Serverless and Traditional Applications“. Outside of greenfield companies, that seems to be the common questions that companies are asking. What topics did you cover in your talk?

    Show notes

Brian talks with Jay Chapel (@parkmycloudjay, Co-Founder/CEO of ParkMyCloud) about the complexity of cloud pricing models, how IT and DevOps teams view spending differently, how to integrate monitoring and automation, and who is critical to making buying decisions in the cloud.

    • Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. Tell us about your background, why you started ParkMyCloud and how you’ve seen the market evolve since you got started (in 2015).
    • Topic 2 - ricing in the public cloud world has gotten both more complicated (e.g. no clouds do it the same way) and simpler (e.g. sustained usage discounts, free tiers, per-second billing, etc.). How do you see the market evolving, and how much of a barrier/burden is pricing “complexity” to public cloud adoption?
    • Topic 3 - You position ParkMyCloud separately for “For DevOps” and “For IT”. How are you seeing those as two distinct use-cases or types of teams?
    • Topic 4 - ParkMyCloud not only monitors cloud costs and recommends areas for savings, but also includes automated tasks to take advantage of those optimizations. Tell us about the automation capabilities and how your customers get comfortable with that level of control in the platform.
    • Topic 5 - What are you seeing as the public cloud buying process these days? Who is involved, what criteria do they consider, and how do various stakeholders (CFO, Project Managers, Developers) continue to get cost visibility?

    • Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. Shannon, How many times has it been now? The last time we spoke to Rancher was at DockerCon EU, 2015 and we spoke to Darren Shepherd. A lot has changed as we’ll get into but first, introduce yourself and how are you doing these days?
    • Topic 2 - Before we dig into details, what is your take on the state of the container industry currently? What are some themes you’ve seen over the last two years?
    • Topic 3 - For those that don’t know, explain both Rancher and RancherOS. What problem are you trying to solve with each?
    • Topic 4 - Rancher as I understand it specializes in application provisioning to both Kubernetes and Docker Swarm either on-prem on to public clouds, correct? Where does Rancher leave off and Kubernetes or Swarm takes over? How is long term management of the application handled? Folks should check out the whitepaper on comparing orchestrators, I took a look last night and it is well done and “down in the weeds”
    • Topic 5 - Let’s talk about Rancher 2.0. There are some really great things in there, tell the folks about what’s just released.
    • Topic 6 - What are the common use cases you are seeing with your early customers? Are customers using Rancher for existing projects (Hadoop, ELK Stack) using the catalog or are they integrating directly in their CI/CD pipelines? Both?

    • Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. It’s now been 3.5 years for The New Stack. Tell us about the various ways that you’re covering all these new technologies and trends and personalities.
    • Topic 2 - If you had to explain the 2014-2017 evolution to somebody new to all of this today, how would you summarize all the options (companies, technologies, foundations, etc.) to them?
    • Topic 3 - How should someone try and make sense of data that is around all these projects? (GitHub stars, survey data, VC funding, the lack of vendor financial reporting, etc.)?
    • Topic 4 - Do you feel like anything since 2014 has become “mainstream” yet (e.g. containers, DevOps, data analytics), or does mainstream mean something very different in today’s world of cloud services?
    • Topic 5 - This marketplace moves very quickly. People look to The News Stack to make sense of it for them. How do you and your team keep up and organize your thinking around all of this?

    • Topic 3 - Is Istio going to be broadly applicable to new applications (cloud-native, microservices), or do you see it trending towards a specific type of use case?
    • Topic 4 - Istio is being adopted by the companies and the technologies around Kubernetes, the CNCF, etc. Do you feel like the Kubernetes architectural approach is going to be the direction that we'll see going forward for modern application development and container usage?

    • Topic 4 - Are we in a technology lull right now? We had containers a couple years ago, and serverless like 12-18 months ago, but right now it feels like an expansion phase. Thoughts?
    • Topic 5 - Let’s talk about some of the trends we’re seeing at this point in 2017:
    • All vendors supporting Kubernetes (AWS, Oracle, Microsoft)
    • Is it strange that we’re heard almost nothing from Docker since DockerCon and their announcements of a new CEO and the “Moby” project?
    • We’re beginning to see some funding in the serverless space (IOpipe, Skippbox acquired by Bitnami, Iron.io at Oracle) and that crazy $140M for Databricks and calling themselves “serverless data science and AI”
    • Topic 6 - We saw Amazon acquire Whole Foods recently, as well as getting back into the retail markets (people-less stores). Do you think we’ll start to see their movement into all these adjacent markets impact customers adopting AWS? Apparently Target is now moving off AWS.
    • Topic 7 - AUDIENCE QUESTION: We’ve never really focused on SaaS applications, outside of SaaS-based tool that help IT. Does our audience think we should focus on SaaS applications, and if so, which verticals should we target?

    • Topic 1a - And since we’re going to talk about Vault, give us the basics of the Vault platform.
    • Topic 2 - Let’s start with the basics. Why are we seeing so many more discussions about secrets management with microservices vs. legacy applications?
    • Topic 3 - What are the core challenges that microservices applications face with regard to secrets? Is it key management, or key rotation or encryption of secrets, or something else?
    • Topic 4 - Since secrets are so central to microservices, and critical to normal operations, how do you make sure that a platform like Vault is highly available? Or what happens if it goes out of service?
    • Topic 5 - If we’re talking about microservices, the conversation typically evolves to deploying them, which leads to discussions about container schedulers. Can you talk about the challenges that schedulers have with secrets and how Vaults helps to manage those challenges?
