The Engine Mom Podcast : Fuel for the Driven Mama | Lifestyle | Motherhood | Wellness | Fitness | Passions | Mindset

The Engine Mom Podcast launched in fall of 2017 and as of summer 2019, the show has come to a pause. The goal of the show has always been to support moms to share women’s stories of motherhood and the pursuit of their passions. For more stories and conversations check out the podcast, Generation.Mom… Looking for a way to merge your pre-kid life into your life as Mom? You’re in the right place. Lara & Jenn candidly discuss real-life experience as Modern Day Moms, and highlight women who create space for both their individual identity and being Mom. This podcast is designed to guide, connect & support women navigating modern day motherhood. Listen weekly & join their community, Generation.Mom.

The Engine Mom Podcast is a show designed to build community through story-telling and to inspire women (especially Moms) to set goals for themselves and think outside the box when it comes to their lifestyle and work. As Moms, we are the driving force of our family; often masters of multi-tasking. Much like an engine, we are made up of many moving parts that create momentum in our lives. Ignoring a single moving part can stall progress toward meeting our goals. In order for us to strive to be better than yesterday, it’s vital that we identify what fuels us: our passions and purpose. It’s important that we re-fuel through self-care, exercise, healthy food, goals setting and by surrounding ourselves with women who are equally as driven. Many of the women that you will hear from on this show run their own businesses, are creative professionals or have unique, yet relatable stories to share about pursuing their passions while raising their family. These stories give an interesting perspective on life as a Mom and are sure to fuel you with inspiration for making the most of your own life.

36: How to write and share your story with Julie Tobi, Founder of The Birth Journal May 14, 2018
    Show notes

My guest today is Julie Tobi, a very nostalgic, sentimental wife and mama of 2, who after thinking she had found her passion in the wedding planning and floral design field, came to realize that it didn't fuel her purpose (her husband and kids). From that realization, she choose to follow her curiosity to develop her current business that she is truly passionate about!

Throughout this journey into business she was, and is inspired by moms doing their thing with family and career and wanted to give back by inspiring other mamas with her story.

She resigned from her day job four months before launching The Birth Journal and while definitely a risk, she says it was her intuition screaming at her to move on. I know you're a bit woo woo as well so you know, when your intuition calls you answer!

My guest has also founded Eliza Paper Space, the business home of The Birth Journal.

Listen in today as my guest talks about:

    • how she thought she had found her passion only to realize that it wasn't fueling her true purpose and what that realization was like
    • how she "birthed" the concept for The Birth Journal
    • why sharing our stories are so important and how she encourages women to tell their story of birth and motherhood
    • and she gives some great advice on how to get started with story telling, whether that be free-write journalling, or recapping specific life events

35: Real Food For Pregnancy & Practical Nutrition for Real life with Lily Nichols, RD May 07, 2018
    Show notes

Lily Nichols is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, researcher, and author with a passion for evidence-based prenatal nutrition and exercise. Drawing from the current scientific literature and the wisdom of traditional cultures, her work is known for being research-focused, thorough, and sensible. Her bestselling book, Real Food for Gestational Diabetes (and online course of the same name), presents a revolutionary nutrient-dense, lower carb diet for managing gestational diabetes. Her unique approach has not only helped tens of thousands of women manage their gestational diabetes (most without the need for blood sugar-lowering medication), but has also influenced nutrition policies internationally.

Lily's second book, Real Food for Pregnancy, is an evidence-based look at the gap between conventional prenatal nutrition guidelines and what's optimal for mother and baby. With over 930 citations, this is the most comprehensive text on prenatal nutrition to date.

Lily is also creator of the popular blog, www.PilatesNutritionist.com, which explores a variety of topics related to real food, mindful eating, and pregnancy nutrition.

Listen in today to hear my guest expand on:

    • the work she does with women and other health care providers and what influenced her work
    • why the typical prenatal nutrition guidelines tend to exclude a lot of nutritient-dense foods and the evidence behind what is optimal for a Mom's health and baby's development in utero
    • her experience with writing her second book while raising an infant and how she tackled the challenge while staying sane
    • her recommendation for reading nutrition labels and a reminder of how to be more conscious of where you're getting your carbs
    • how she tunes in and uses mindful eating to manage her meals and help her feel energized, maintain weight and eliminate food drama and the basic nutritional principles she recommends for those who might feel overwhelmed by an overload of information

Jennifer Scribner is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Certified GAPSTM Practitioner, and Restorative Wellness Practitioner. She's the author of the book From Mac & Cheese to Veggies, Please. How to get your kid to eat new foods, end picky eating forever, and stay sane in the process, which is based on her work with hundreds of clients and details how any parent can dramatically change the diet of their pickiest kids.

Jennifer teaches families how to make step-by-step changes to create a non-toxic lifestyle. Her focus includes food choices, non-toxic home products, and mindset and stress management tools, including EFT Tapping.

She has specialized in working with kids on the autism spectrum and with other health challenges like asthma, food allergies, eczema, or serious illnesses.

I'll be honest, I was a little hesitant about having a non-mom on the show because of the vision I had for exclusively sharing Mom's stories, but when she and I connected and I learned about her work, I felt so drawn to her authenticity and desire to serve others, among other things . She and I definitely "speak the same language" and I had a blast on this interview

    • how to deal with picky eaters as a parent
    • the importance of gut flora and how that plays a major role in immunity and imbalances

27: How to Create & Use Your Guiding Principles to Get Clear on Your Goals with Angelike Norrie Mar 12, 2018
    Show notes

Today you will hear from my guest who is a happily married, working mother of two adorable girls, an author, speaker, a five-time cover model and as a world martial arts champion she is a firm believer in daily discipline. Prior to taking a leap of faith to control her own destiny, she worked in corporate America as a sales executive, managing fortunes and people. After escaping 60-hour workweeks with extensive travel, she became an entrepreneur with a passion for nutrition, fitness, philosophy, and business coaching.

These days, instead of stressing about quotas, day care and commutes, she helps women flex both their physical and spiritual muscles through Soulutions, a multi-faceted coaching program that helps women bare their souls and regain dominion in all areas of their life.

I was "introduced" to my guest via Instagram - a mutual friend recommended that I follow her and check out some her keynotes and I was blown away by her confidence, her positive energy and her drive. I was thrilled when she responded to a message from a random Mom asking her to be on the show. Listen in to hear my guest talk about

    • she talks about the powerful lesson she learned while watching her mother lose her battle with cancer
