Renée Rouleau | Focusing on Your Strengths Oct 17, 2020
    Show notes

Renée Rouleau is a celebrity aesthetician and skincare expert who joins me on the podcast to share the story of her incredible career in beauty.

From small beginnings Renée has become a household name not least because of her hugely popular blog, A-list client list and her habit of taking big risks and not fearing change.

She has famously categorised skin into nine different types, that’s right, skin isn’t just dry, combination, normal or oily, and has a product for everything from long-term anti-ageing results to on-the-spot treatments that’ll deal with an unwanted blemish in no time.

In this conversation @reneerouleau and I discuss:

    • How she came to really ‘understand’ skin.
    • Where business and beauty meet.
    • The importance of mentors in guiding you towards your goals.
    • Why knowing who you are and what you stand for is key.
    • The 13 questions she asks herself to make decision making not only quick but efficient.
    • Her nine skin types and why personalised skincare is so important.
    • Being an early-adopter to e-commerce and why big decisions and taking risks have always worked in her favour.

Bullet Points | It's ok to not be ok. Oct 13, 2020
    Show notes

It’s ok not to be ok.

In a brand new episode of the podcast I discuss my mental health diagnosis of severe depression and anxiety back in 2016 and why it was so helpful.

I’d always feared this kind of diagnosis would signpost me as a failure, but it actually signposted my way out of a lifetime of negative thinking, self-sabotaging behaviour and unhappiness.

When I look back and ask myself if there’s anything I wish I’d done differently, it’s that I’d have asked for help earlier. Instead I spent years powering through, pushing it away and minimising how bad things were until eventually it all caught up with me and I had no choice but to address it.

This podcast was prompted by the response to the video I posted on #IGTV about my mental health and as not everyone who follows me on social listens to the show - and vice versa - I wanted to share that audio again as the second half of the episode. It also contains the five books that I have found most helpful in understanding my own mental health issues but also understanding other people and what they may be going through too.

    The books featured are:

    Lost Connections by @johann.hari

    The Four Tendencies by @gretchenrubin

You Are a Badass by @jensincero

First, We Make the Beast Beautiful by @_sarahwilson_

How to Survive the End of the World by @technicallyron

Following on from the successful The Tweakments Guide, an encyclopedia of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, this new book not only explains why skincare is the first step in any anti-ageing regimen but how to create one for your specific skin type, wants and needs.

In this episode Alice and I discuss:

    • Why any anti-ageing protocol should start with skincare.
    • How long it can take to see and feel the benefits of skincare on your skin.

Being More Keanu with James King Oct 03, 2020
    Show notes

James King is a writer, film critic and broadcaster who joins me to talk about his new book Be More Keanu. What might look like a love letter to Keanu Reeves is actually a self-help manual in disguise - instead of ancient scripts and proverbs the Tao of Keanu is told via the actor's film choices, characters and actions both on and off-screen.

In this conversation James and I discuss:

    • Why there's a lot to be learned from Keanu Reeves.
    • Why his film choices have often told a bigger story about Keanu's understanding of the world.
    • Why Keanu's brand of kindness is one we should all aspire to.
    • What it takes to be a film critic and whether it actually stops you enjoying films.
    • What it's like interviewing A-list film stars and why Keanu has stood out from the crowd.
    • The value in making mistakes, and much more.

Also in this conversation the Sex and the City 2 and Entourage reviews by Mark Kermode, which are worth a watch.

Jillian Michaels | How to find your stride with health and fitness. Sep 26, 2020
    Show notes

Jillian Michaels is a personal trainer, businesswoman, author, health and fitness expert and creator of the My Fitness by Jillian Michaels app who joins me on the podcast for some straight talking about health, fitness and the science of weight loss.

@jillianmichaels has guided millions to fitness via her workout DVDs, youtube channel and via her time on The Biggest Loser as a trainer. She is well-known for her straight-talking health and fitness advice, but she is also incredibly compassionate about how hard it can be to not only take the first step, but to maintain any health and fitness regime, which is why she tries to cater for everyone - so much so, she has a strategy to help anyone, regardless of motivation, fitness level and age.

The foundation of Jillian's advice has remained the same over the course of her career because, as she says in the show, you can't argue with science, but that doesn't mean she isn't at the forefront of the latest scientific research and biological discovery.

    In this episode we discuss:

    The science of weight loss.

Calories in vs calories out and the science of thermodynamics.

Why it is easier for some people to lose weight than others.

Why being honest with yourself is the first step on the way to your health and fitness goal.

How to find your 'why' and use it as motivation.

    Why consistency is key.

Why age really doesn't matter in health and fitness and much more.
