Anita B. McBride is executive-in-residence at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies in the School of Public Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. She directs programming and national conferences on the legacies of America’s first ladies (the First Ladies Initiative) and their historical influence on politics, policy, and global diplomacy.

McBride's White House service spans two decades and three presidential administrations. McBride previously served as assistant to President George W. Bush and chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush from 2005 to 2009, directing the staff’s work on the wide variety of domestic and global initiatives in which Mrs. Bush was involved. She had primary responsibility for the First Lady’s efforts to support US foreign policy objectives in human rights, women’s empowerment, global health and human freedom. She directed Mrs. Bush’s travel to 67 countries in 4 years including historic visits to Afghanistan, the Middle East and the Thai-Burma border. She served, as director of White House Personnel under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush and as director of the U.S. Speaker's Bureau at the United States Information Agency.

Also under President George W. Bush, McBride served as a special assistant for White House Management; as senior advisor in the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Organizations and as the State Department's White House liaison.

McBride co-founded the RAND African First Ladies Initiative and Fellowship program, partnering with Africa’s first ladies to champion change for health and education, and to train their staff and advisors in strategies for establishing and managing an effective First Lady’s office.

McBride is an advisor to the George W. Bush Institute as well as a strategic consultant to global non-profit organizations. She is a member of several organizations, including the US Afghan Women's Council, the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and the White House Historical Association.

Akram Elias, an American citizen of Lebanese origin, has been a resident of the Washington, DC area since 1982. He and his wife Lourdes live in College Park, Maryland. Elias is the co-founder and President of Capital Communications Group, Inc. (“CCG”) an international consulting firm offering a variety of services to government and private clients in the areas of public diplomacy, cultural intelligence, strategic language services, communication strategies, and orientations to Washington, DC. Elias wrote the original treatment for a documentary by the History Channel entitled, “Mr. Dreyfuss Goes to Washington” and co-produced it with Academy Awards winner Richard Dreyfuss in 2001, and has since appeared in numerous documentaries produced for the History Channel, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and the Public Broadcasting System. Mr. Elias is currently finishing writing a book titled “American by Choice” describing how his experience in embracing America can serve to reaffirm what makes her exceptional, a nation able to help advance the human condition everywhere. On January 1, 2018, Douglas Bradburn, Ph.D., became the 11th Director of George Washington's Mount Vernon.

Bradburn joined Mount Vernon in 2013 when named the Founding Director of The George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon. He is an award-winning author and well-known scholar of early American history.

Bradburn is the author of The Citizenship Revolution: Politics and the Creation of the American Union, 1774-1804, and three anthologies, including Early Modern Virginia: Reconsidering the Old Dominion, the most significant book produced to mark the 400th anniversary of the English founding of Jamestown. He is the co-founder and editor of the award-winning book series, Early American Histories, at the University of Virginia Press, and the winner of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the yearlong Gilder Lehrman Research Fellowship at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello.

He is the recipient of five Telly awards for his work on animated documentaries for use in the classroom and a “Thea” award for the popular Be Washington interactive educational game. Bradburn has appeared on C-SPAN, Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, and was most recently featured in the History Channel's docudrama, WASHINGTON.

Before coming to Mount Vernon, Bradburn served as Chair of the History Department at Binghamton University, State University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago and his B.A. in history and economics from the University of Virginia.

Ann Mills-Griffiths serves as Chairman of the bi-annually elected Board of Directors of the National League of POW/MIA Families and retains CEO responsibilities. She served over 30 years as Executive Director and CEO of the nonprofit, 501(c)3 humanitarian organization in Washington, DC. Having stepped aside from administering the League’s national office on August 1, 2011, she currently focuses primarily on policy, operations, and sustaining the League’s financial ability to achieve accounting objectives. Since 1970, the League has fought for the return of all POWs, the fullest possible accounting for the MIAs, and the recovery and identification of the remains of those who died serving our nation during the Vietnam War. From 1980 through 1992, Ms. Mills-Griffiths represented the families’ views as a founding member of the POW/MIA Interagency Group (IAG), the US Government’s senior-level policy development mechanism for achieving accounting results in the context of developing bilateral relations with Vietnam and restoring normal bilateral relations with Laos and Cambodia. She was instrumental in setting up high level negotiations between Vietnam and the United States in 1982-83. Since then, she has continued to represent the POW/MIA families and America’s missing personnel through direct contacts with US and foreign leaders.

Ms. Mills-Griffiths has met frequently with senior officials in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, as well as with Thai, Russian, Chinese and other diplomats and senior officials in an effort to expedite answers. As a recognized leader on POW/MIA issues and recipient of numerous honors, she also has appeared frequently before congressional committees and sub- committees, national and international broadcast media, participated for decades in policy forums dealing with Southeast Asia, and been called upon for advice and counsel by foreign nations facing their own personnel accounting issues.

Commander James B. Mills, USNR, Ms. Mills-Griffiths’ brother, was listed as MIA on September 21, 1966, when the Navy F4B on which he served as Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) disappeared on a night, low-flying bombing mission over North Vietnam. He was on his second tour, assigned to Fighter Squadron 21, USS Coral Sea.

Retired Navy Commander Everett Alvarez, Jr. was the first American aviator shot down over Vietnam and the longest-held prisoner of war in North Vietnam — eight-and-a-half years. He holds numerous military decorations, including the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts.

In addition to his distinguished military service, Mr. Alvarez is a lawyer, author, entrepreneur, and executive. He also had an exceptional public service career as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration, and Chairman of the CARES Commission. In 2008, Mr. Alvarez was honored as one of the 25 greatest public servants by the Council for Excellence in Government. In the private sector, he founded Conwal in 1987, which he sold in 2002, and Alvarez & Associates in 2004.

Mr. Alvarez is a lifetime member of the Board of Fellows of Santa Clara University, which awarded him its Alumnus of Distinction Award; he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1960. After his return from Vietnam, he received an MS in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1976 and a JD from The George Washington University in 1983.

Mr. Alvarez continues to be involved with education through his service on the Board of Governors of Grantham University, the Board of Directors of the International Graduate University of Democracy in Washington DC, and the College of William & Mary Washington DC Council. In 1987, his hometown of Salinas, California named a new high school after him, Everett Alvarez High School, which was completed in 1994.

Mr. Alvarez has served on the White House Board of Fellows Selection Committee, the Board of Directors of the Armed Services YMCA of the USA, and the Library of Congress Veterans History Project Five Star Council Advisory Committee. He has also authored two books — Chained Eagle, a historical account of his experiences during his captivity in Vietnam, and Code of Conduct, the story of the rebuilding of his life upon his return from Vietnam.

In addition to his distinguished military service, Mr. Alvarez is a lawyer, author, entrepreneur, and executive. He also had an exceptional public service career as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration, and Chairman of the CARES Commission. In 2008, Mr. Alvarez was honored as one of the 25 greatest public servants by the Council for Excellence in Government. In the private sector, he founded Conwal in 1987, which he sold in 2002, and Alvarez & Associates in 2004.

Mr. Alvarez is a lifetime member of the Board of Fellows of Santa Clara University, which awarded him its Alumnus of Distinction Award; he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1960. After his return from Vietnam, he received an MS in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1976 and a JD from The George Washington University in 1983.

Mr. Alvarez continues to be involved with education through his service on the Board of Governors of Grantham University, the Board of Directors of the International Graduate University of Democracy in Washington DC, and the College of William & Mary Washington DC Council. In 1987, his hometown of Salinas, California named a new high school after him, Everett Alvarez High School, which was completed in 1994.

Mr. Alvarez has served on the White House Board of Fellows Selection Committee, the Board of Directors of the Armed Services YMCA of the USA, and the Library of Congress Veterans History Project Five Star Council Advisory Committee. He has also authored two books — Chained Eagle, a historical account of his experiences during his captivity in Vietnam, and Code of Conduct, the story of the rebuilding of his life upon his return from Vietnam.
