    Episode 49 - Terry Brown Jan 23, 2021
    Show notes

My old friend, Terry Brown, was a banker and then an actor and now he handles communications for a non-profit. We had lost touch over the past several years - consumed by the obligations of family, and I'll confess I didn't hold out a lot of hope as I watched from afar as he wrestled with addiction. But here he is after a long journey of just taking the next right step - 2 years sober - and this interview is the best conversation we've ever had.

    Episode 47 - Jamie Niven Sep 11, 2020
    Show notes

Jamie Niven is the son of international movie star and academy award winner for best actor, David Niven. But I really knew him from my parents crowd of waspy New Yorkers spending the summers out on Long Island where he was always the life of the party and where growing up I had rarely seen any of his set get sober. He had a career in finance before becoming an entrepreneur and then spent 20 years at Sothebys where he eventually rose to the position of Chairman of the Americas. He has a long career in philanthropy and currently chairs the Partnership to End Addiction.

    Episode 46 - Robb Kelly Aug 28, 2020
    Show notes

Robb Kelly was a bassist at Abbey Road studios where he played with the likes of Elton John, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie. What started as a means of overcoming stage fright as young boy eventually blossomed into a handle a day drinking habit. His life took a drastic turn when a sudden act of violence ended his marriage, and he soon found himself homeless on the streets of Manchester, England. For most people recovery comes with some sort of spiritual element. In this case that element seems to be supernatural.

He is now the founder of The Robb Kelly recovery group with more info at https://robbkelly.com

    Episode 45 - Debra DiGiovanni Jul 15, 2020
    Show notes

Debra DiGiovanni is a very funny stand up comedian who does something on stage unlike anyone I've ever seen before. She's Candadian and has appeared on Conan and Last Comic Standing and she talks here about how she finally got sober only when her addiction started to interfere with her career.

    Episode 44 - David G. Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

David G was raised in a religious cult where he learned early on to keep his family's membership secret. It was a lesson that would serve him too well as his alcoholism deepened and yet he still managed to keep it from everyone close to him until the burden of his addiction proved too much. He got help and came to understand that his self-worth need not be tied to his failure or accomplishments.

    Show notes

Carder just published his first book - a memoire called Lost In Ghost Town - about his journey from an affluent childhood in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC to a dark stint of homelessness in Venice, California where he worked as a driver for the Shoreline Crips and there found a sense of place and self-worth that eventually fueled his recovery. He now has a PhD in psychology and works as a therapist here in Los Angeles helping patients grapple with anxiety, depression, trauma and addiction.

    Episode 41: Renee Santos Apr 14, 2020
    Show notes

Renee Santos is a stand up comedian who grew up in Massachusetts where she found herself in the foster care system by the time she reached her early teens. Still she managed to get a full scholarship to college before migrating to Los Angeles to chase a career in acting. She describes her moment of reckoning as a spiritual bottom where she found a path to help in an awesomely unlikely way.

    Episode 39: Kari Assad Mar 17, 2020
    Show notes

Kari grew up in Santa Rosa California where she fell hard for the theater scene - a passion that took her to Emerson College and on into the South for acting after. The bug then brought her out to Los Angeles where she eventually found that same vital sense of energy and community in the world of stand up but not before she first endured a couple of dark phases and before the discovery of a form and method of recovery I've never encountered.
