The Dropcast #95: Paris Fashion Week is the New Agenda feat. Amrit Jan 24, 2020
    Show notes

After her move to New York City and integration into the city’s creative sphere, Amrit Sidhu has made a name for herself as an in demand DJ and creative consultant. The Australian-born DJ has taken her musically trained talent to sets for big names like Dior, Fendi, Jorja Smith, and Tommy Genesis. Amrit came through to the studio stowed in Noah’s suitcase from Paris Fashion Week, ready to discuss the quick hits along with PFW’s top shows and parties.

This week’s highlights start on a low note with the closing of Opening Ceremony’s stores following their acquisition by New Guards Group (2:43). The cast reminisce on the retailer’s legacy and their loss of sample sales and discounts while Amrit recalls her first big move in the city as being booked by the brand.

Amrit’s only building more momentum as she continues to work with Nike. She got her hands on the Comme des Garcons Homme Plus x Nike Air Max 95s without having a clue about their price (5:46).

Although traces of a new CDG Nike shoe were absent from PFW, plenty of fire pieces were spotted on the runway (7:32).

Noah caught on to trends such as tailoring, neck pieces ranging from thin silks to thick scarves, and winter shorts. The new sacai Nikes are making noise without a doubt, stirring up mixed reviews with people falling strong on either end. Amrit adored every Jacquemus bag and shoe, and was thoroughly impressed by the entire show.

Jacquemus isn’t the only one turning 30; Nike has announced the new Air Max 2090 in celebration of Air Max 90’s 30th year (12:11). Jian stands alone on the shoe, which Noah and Amrit plead the fifth on, and considers setting a New Year resolution of only wearing GR’s. You heard it first here.

Fashion Week FW20 is almost over, and the world has been witness to an impressive lineup of shoe related news during the past few weeks including the release of Dior Jordan Lows, GmbH ASICS, Wales Bonner x adidas, and Raf Simons’ announcement for making in-house shoes (17:23).

In other news, Offset announced that “Culture III” will be Migos’ last album, but that’s up for interpretation. The rapper also dropped his new clothing line Laundered Works Corp. at PFW with creative director and designer Chaz A. Jordan (25:31). The quick hits end on fashion, with news about Jean-Paul Gualtier’s retirement and Demna Gvasalia’s decision to bring Balenciaga back to haute couture (26:10).

The Question of the Week (QOTW) asked listeners “Who had the best PFW collection?” and Noah handed it to Bode and Lanvin while Amrit listed Jacquemus, Undercover, and Casablanca (26:42). This episode introduced a special segment of “PFW Lightning Round” where Amrit and Noah answered with their top shows, parties, and things that “hit different” as quickly as possible (30:53).

Before jumping into “What’d You Cop,” Noah announces the new Kiko Kostadinov mules that debuted during PFW as the “Mule of the Week” (36:11). Amrit was gifted a pair of black CDG Homme Plus Nike Air Max 95s and copped pieces from Prada and Bottega Veneta (36:55).

Be on the lookout for the next QOTW which will be posted on Highsnobiety’s Instagram, and leave a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode.

The Dropcast #94: All Hail Nicole McLaughlin, Queen of the Mules Jan 17, 2020
    Show notes

Ever since Nicole McLaughlin made her debut with a pair of custom L.L.Bean fleece slippers, the designer has cemented her identity through upcycled pieces imbued with a vintage flair. After leaving her position as a graphic designer at Reebok, Nicole refined her craft even further and turned it from a personal hobby into a business venture. The Mule Queen joins hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas on this week’s episode of The Dropcast to talk about life as a designer as well as her best style tricks and hacks.

First, the quick hits take us through the collections and collaborations dropping during Fashion Week. Highsnobiety got backstage access at Wales Bonner’s London Fashion Week show which included a look at the brand’s FW20 adidas collaboration (2:37). Noah pledges allegiance to adidas for their classic models, and the whole cast gives appreciation for the sneaker-dress-shoe hybrid. Still, since Noah isn’t feeling the adidas Ultraboost silhouette even with the new Ivy Park x adidas collab, he best be careful of the Beyhive’s sting (4:25).

The Dropcast #93: Secrets of the Asian Glo-Up feat. Ronny Chieng Jan 10, 2020
    Show notes

Ronny Chieng is a comedian, correspondent, and actor who has achieved acclaim through his sitcom “Ronny Chieng: International Student” and role as senior correspondent on The Daily Show. Now, the self-proclaimed modern day philosopher is back with a Netflix comedy special “Asian Comedian Destroys America” and looking forward to covering non-political topics on The Daily Show for the year ahead.

On this episode of The Dropcast, Ronny brings his cool substitute teacher vibes, sets a distinction between envy and jealousy among fellow comedians and artists who participate in creative endeavors, and details his release of cool merch that he would want to buy for himself. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas find order in the madness that was the 2010s and ring in the new decade with the help of Ronny in the quick hits.

A defining trend in the fashion industry has been the merging of streetwear with all forms of fashion, most notably the world of luxury — or as Ronny describes it: more expensive versions of comfort (4:48).

    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Dropcast, hosts Noah Thomas and Jian DeLeon welcome the new decade with Nicolas Heller, better known as NYC anthropologist New York Nico, and illustrator Naomi Otsu.

Though they've both accomplished impressive creative careers in their own respective ways, they're also low-key relationship goals in the fact that they've gotten the chance to work on some really cool projects together, whether it's campaigns around Opening Ceremony's gigantic tote bags, or one of the most deadass memes of the decade: a Baby Yoda that only a New Yorker could love. Listen to how the meme came together at (16:58).

    Show notes

If you're not up on on his Instagram account yet, consider this your opportunity to soak up some game. The conversation gets spicy when they begin to talk about Jordans and the state of sneaker culture. The Dropcast #90: Facetime Fit Battles & Flexing the adidas ZX with Tyler Busher - The Dropcast LIVE at adidas Dec 20, 2019
    Show notes

Earlier this week, Highsnobiety recorded its first live show of The Dropcast at adidas Originals’ store in Soho, New York City. Guests sipped on ZX cocktails as they formed an audience in the presence of hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas who discussed the past and future of the revolutionary ZX series with adidas’ NYC culture ambassador Tyler Busher. The ZX launched in 1984 as a series of progressive running shoes for performance athletes, and continues to reinvent itself with innovative technology after more than 30 years.

While Tyler makes up half of The Binary Group, a synthesis company that seeks to bridge the gap between fashion, music, and design, he brings social and environmental awareness to footwear through projects like the fully recyclable adidas Futurecraft.Loop sneaker. The adidas-head gives a breakdown on the ZX series’ history and influence on sports and subcultures, his alkaline diet, and Ferrari Testarossa dreams. But before that, the episode kicks off with a quick foot check (3:22).

The Dropcast #89: Ronnie Fieg Makes Us KITH Dec 13, 2019
    Show notes

After discussing the unfortunate death of the great Juice WRLD, we get his opinion on drops and collabs, including the very talked-about Dior Jordans, Kanye’s new YEEZY 700 MNVN “Phosphor” colorway, Theophilus London’s new Off-White™ boots, 032c’s adidas FYW S-97 Salvation’s, and Beyoncé’s new adidas. While discussing each topic, he expresses his great respect for all points of views and designs, and while he might not be the customer for each item, he is careful to not put anything down, explaining that he has often been in design rooms for countless hours, only to be met with negative feedback. So, while some things were for sure his vibe, others were “not for him.”

After getting through all the quick hits, Ronnie talks about how he is preparing for his next collections and lets the world know his latest Bergdorf collab will have the streets on their toes. Jian brings up that Ronnie is about to go on another one of his amazing Kith trips, which are “adventures” where he invites close friends around the world to hang with him for a few days. Since his first one in Aspen, he has continued to expand this idea, making it more and more inclusive to his fans who otherwise might not have had the chance to get their hands on certain items and experiences.

Jian gets Ronnie to explain how he came up with this idea and why it’s so important to him. We then get into the QOTW, which is where we ask Dropcast listeners to call the hotline, which is 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766), and have them answer weekly questions. This week, the Q is “Best Kith Collab?” Versace, Bergdorf Goodman, and Greg Lauren all come up.

Of course, the show ends with our key segment “What Did You Cop?” Ronnie talks about how he went in on holiday shopping, and was gifted the “Viotech” dunks, a shoe he’s been waiting to get his hands on.

The icy drops continue with Virgil Abloh’s “Crystal Clear” collection in collaboration with French crystalware and glass manufacturer, Baccarat, that’s on display at Art Basel Miami (15:33).

Luke talks about his newest Balenciaga puffer in “What’d You Cop?” and drops a hint as he breaks down the high fashion pieces that Round Two has in store (34:45). For anyone at Art Basel this week, stop by Round Two in South Beach, Miami to try your luck.

The Dropcast #87: Chopping It Up About Gucci Greens with Chef JJ Nov 29, 2019
    Show notes

Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas catch up with Chef JJ Johnson to hear about what he’s got cooking. The James Beard Award-winning chef specializes in his signature pan-African cuisine, which he brought into popularity during his residency at New York’s Chefs Club. While Chef JJ is busy feeding the culture, he also believes in the importance of integrating his food with the community.

The quick hits bring some appetizers to the table with Undercover’s Nike Air Max 720 and React Boot, both of which are dropping this week (2:50). The main course presents Dior’s B24 and Louis Vuitton’s Rivoli sneakers, with the latter looking a bit reminiscent of a dish the French fashion house has served in the past (5:23). The cast decides to take a pass on dessert — the Prada x adidas Superstars — which they hope is just a teaser for what the two brands have in store for the future (9:07).

This week’s biggest headlines are lined up, starting with Sherbinskis, The Dropcast alumni and the by CHLOE. of the cannabis market, which recently opened the doors for its flagship North American dispensary on Los Angeles’ Fairfax Avenue (13:47). Then, the hosts fire the alarm for the cop of the week: LVMH’s purchase of Tiffany & Co. for a record-breaking $16.2 billion (15:29). Last but not least, Drake’ dad, Dennis Graham, is in talks to land his own reality dating show with multiple networks that are interested in securing the series (17:37). Things start to get questionable with Drake on board as the executive producer.

Chef JJ talks cooking some off-menu items for Dapper Dan’s dinner, who’s now vegan and a fan of JJ’s restaurant up in Harlem — get ready for some Gucci Greens (19:57). JJ discusses Fieldtrip, where rice is culture, and what the holidays are like for him (21:40). He dishes out tips for getting that moist turkey ready in time for next Thanksgiving, and a quick recipe for turkey leftovers just in time for this year (23:05).

This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked, “What’s your favorite struggle meal?” and had Dropcast listeners calling in with tasteful inspirations while JJ shares his related food stories and quick-and-easy bodega grabs (25:22).

Speaking of consumerism and giving thanks during the holidays, the episode wraps up with “What’d You Cop?” (33:26). Chef JJ was gifted a pair of Converse Off-Whites, and talks about changing the shoe game for chefs in the kitchen.

As always, our next QOTW will be up on Highsnobiety’s Instagram. Leave us a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode.

The Dropcast #86: LL Cool J’s Gonna Have to Do It to These Meatball Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

Ladies Love Cool James, but the rapper, producer, actor, radio host, and all-around entrepreneur is an icon for rap lovers alike. This week marks the 34th anniversary of LL Cool J’s debut album Radio, which was received with critical acclaim and contributed to the solidification of rap as a genre of music.

LL signed to Def Jam Records when it was a fledgling hip-hop label, and later turned to acting as he made his debut in movies and TV shows like NCIS. The Grammy Award-winning artist emceed for the show multiple times, and stays classic rather than fitting into a new school or old school style. This mentality led him to a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and earned him the Kennedy Center Honors a year later, marking him as the first rapper to achieve the recognition.

Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas sat down with LL to discuss his current projects and play a little game that’s a twist on the usual. The trio dive into the episode with the quick hits, starting with 424’s collab with adidas on the SC Premiere and Pro models (8:24). LL shares his thoughts on the shoes and how the recent announcement of adidas and Prada’s collab shows that classic hip-hop is culture.

The Question of the Week (QOTW) asked listeners “Who’s the greatest rapper/actor of all time?” with LL weighing in on their rankings (37:22).

LL moves on to his hefty purchases in “What’d You Cop?” including sweatshirts from Feature, a couple Rhude pieces, some Murakami skateboards, and a few jewel-encrusted portrait paintings by Fab Five Freddy (43:48).

Stay tuned for the next QOTW which will be posted on Highsnobiety’s Instagram, and leave a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode.
