    The Devoted Dreamers Podcast

What if the dream in your heart was placed there by God for a reason?

Merritt Onsa, host of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast, helps Christian women in midlife find the courage to pursue their God-shaped dreams—even when fear, doubt, and imposter syndrome say they’re not ready.

Through real conversations with women living out their callings and short solo episodes full of biblical truth and encouragement, you’ll discover:
✨ How to move forward even when you feel unqualified
✨ The source of lies that keep dreamers stuck (and the truth that sets you free)
✨ Practical wisdom for taking the next brave step with God

This is your safe place to wrestle with questions about how to move forward, get clarity for your calling, and remember you don’t have to do it alone.

Together we’re building a community of sisters in Christ who will remind you where your hope lies and encourage you to keep taking the next step.

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing and start walking boldly with Jesus toward the life He’s calling you to, you’re in the right place.

174 || [Solo] A Call for Christian Women to be Part of the Solution || Merritt Onsa Nov 04, 2020
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

I was torn about what to share on the podcast this week. I didn’t feel comfortable continuing, business as usual, with the next episode and neglecting what feels like a really important decision being made in the U.S. right now.

So I did something that felt out of my comfort zone but also like the right choice: instead of releasing the episode I’d planned for the first week of November, I am sharing my heart about what I believe we as passionate, ambitious Christian women who are part of the body of Christ need to be thinking about right now, no matter how the presidential election is decided this week.

We need to be part of the solution.

I don’t think anyone would disagree that the U.S. is experiencing an incredible level of divisiveness, brokenness, hurt, anger, frustration, and the list goes on. I’ve seen Christians pitted against Christians – people who claim the grace and mercy given on the cross through the death and resurrection of Christ our Savior – and who are responding out of fear, who seem to have forgotten our King on the throne. Or who think possibly, maybe this time, we are too far gone as a nation to find a way back to hope, healing and reconciliation.

I want us to resist that temptation.

And I want to challenge you – the dreamer of God-shaped dreams, the woman who lies awake at night with a vision burning a hole in your mind and heart that won’t let up. I challenge you to pay attention to what’s driving you, seek out your own healing where that is needed, and rise up to bring the redemptive light of Jesus into a hurting and broken world.

This episode suggests five steps you can take right now, three resources I personally offer to help you take those steps, and a handful of past podcast episodes that will support you on that journey (just check out the show notes for those). All of it flows from the Ephesians 6 verses that came to mind for me on Monday when I was asking God what this episode needed to be about.

I hope it meets you where you are today or whenever you might be listening.

Stephanie Rousselle is the founder of Gospel Spice Ministries. God has given her a unique passion for making the Bible come alive to modern-day hearts and minds. She offers a dose of encouragement for your unanswered prayers and a reminder of what to do when fear threatens to take over.

I love Stephanie’s heart for teaching God’s Word to a modern-day Western audience. As a fellow podcaster, I can only imagine the level of perseverance and devotion required to engage with this highly involved task on a weekly basis. I pray this conversation inspires you persevere in the dream God has uniquely tapped you for, especially if it’s something that feels beyond your abilities right now.

I hope you’ll come away from this conversation with additional insights on:

    • Why the trusted people in your life who see something in you are worth listening to,
    • The greatest victory you can acknowledge in following your God-shaped dream,
    • Why it’s okay—even good—to take steps even in the middle of uncertainty,
    • How to handle it when you’re praying for answers and God is silent, and
    • The honing device God has planted in you to help you discover your God-shaped dream.

172 || [Pivot Session] When is it Worth the Risk to Try Something New? || Beth Bruno Oct 21, 2020
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Beth Bruno is a curator of the feminine story, amplifier of the feminine voice, and explorer of feminine glory. You can find her doing just that with her daughters on the Fierce & Lovely Podcast; in her book, A VOICE BECOMING: A Yearlong Mother-Daughter Journey into Passionate, Purposed Living; and through the Fierce & Lovely Moms Membership Community. Deeply committed to story, she leads a team of story experts with her husband at Restoration Counseling and directs ReStory Labs, a digital laboratory for people to come alive through podcasts, webinars, courses, and more. They live in Colorado with two teen girls at home and a son in college.

These Pivot Session episodes are all short, honest conversations with a guest who has made a shift in her dream in response to the coronavirus pandemic that arrived on the scene in early 2020. This is all about not allowing the enemy of our souls win the battle for our dreams. Listen in, be encouraged, and maybe even get an idea about how you might be open to God’s nudges that could shape and shift your dream during this unprecedented time in our lives.

When lockdown happened, Beth and her husband were already trying to figure out how to shift their professional lives and build a business together. The pandemic accelerated their plans much faster than they would have chosen to without it, but it wasn’t a path that required them to start over. Instead, their “new” dream made the most of what they’d already been building individually and motivated them to act quickly to meet the needs right in front of them.

Listen and learn as Beth shares about:

    • Fighting off the imposter syndrome inherent in launching something new,
    • Learning and growing as change was happening,
    • Making the most of a unique opportunity, and
    • How to take big risks and finding the grace to fail.

171 || How to Keep Your Perspective Even Through a Season of Grief || Joanna Meyer Oct 14, 2020
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Joanna Meyer serves the Denver Institute for Faith & Work as Director of Public Engagement and oversees the Women & Vocation Initiative. Joanna brings her story with vulnerability and openness regarding the loss of a personal dream, and she shares how God has continued to provide opportunities to develop her voice and vision for her vocational dream as well as clarity in how to steward a path that includes unanswered prayers.

Joanna teaches us what it’s like to actively pursue the dream in your heart even when the path you’ve been called to steward involves grief and loss. I hope you’ll come away from this conversation with insight on:

    • How keep perspective even through seasons of grief and lament,
    • What it looks like to trust and remain faithful to God even when He hasn’t provided the answers you’ve cried out for, and
    • Letting your soul lay fallow for a season instead of forcing optimism, trying to manage difficult emotions or solve problems that aren’t yours to solve.

If you’re a single woman wanting to be married, if you’re a married woman longing for children, if you’re still not sure what your dream is or you’re trying to figure out how to integrate your relational callings with your professional callings, you won’t want to miss a minute of this honest conversation with my friend Joanna.

170 || How to Find Beauty in the Ashes of Your Broken Past || Lisa Vanderveen Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Lisa Vanderveen has a burden to bring transformation to women with past abortions or sexual heartbreak. Her God-shaped dream is the result of her own healing over the last few years, releasing 30-year-old hurts and embracing her calling as a practitioner of the healing modality that blessed her so much. Lisa is in the early stages of working on life coach certification to help her clients complete their own transformation by embracing their God-given calling.

Still in the early stages of dreaming, Lisa shares how the journey to her big dream came as a result of the difficulties in her own life. This will remind you that our God is the redeemer of our hurts and our past.

You’ll learn what it looks like to know what your dream is but not have all the details in place and how you can still have peace in your heart while you wait. You’ll witness our God as the foundation for our confidence.

And you’ll understand why it’s so important to do the work to create a vision statement and/or vision board for your dream

If you’re in the early stages of pursuing a God-shaped dream but feel intimidated by what you don’t know, I pray that seeing the pieces come together in Lisa’s story is an inspiration to you to abide with the Father and wait on His direction and leading for your next steps.

169 || [Solo] What Is Imposter Syndrome and How to Know If You Have It || Merritt Onsa Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

What keeps you from pursuing your God-shaped dream? Have you struggled with that voice in your head that says you are not enough or regularly poses the question “Who am I to do this?”

The Oxford Dictionary defines imposter syndrome as the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills.

When I first heard the term imposter syndrome I was totally confused, I didn’t understand what this was about, why people were talking about it, and even if I should be concerned about this “malady” impacting my life.

The more I learned about imposter syndrome the more I began to understand this sneaky voice that had been a part of my thinking for years and years. It was the worry that even if I was incredibly passionate about a pursuit (let’s call it a dream) that I had “no business” doing it because I was a newbie to the cause.

"I mean, others were passionate about this before I was. I’ve probably missed the boat. Everyone’s heard everything there is to hear on this topic. What new thing would I have to add to the conversation?"

These thoughts and feelings kept me in hiding and feeling insecure about what I had to offer for way, way too long.

    Can you relate?

If so, this is the episode for you!

I have a vision for God’s women to not just battle imposter syndrome but to beat it once and for all, to live in freedom, and to fight back against these lies from the enemy.

Katie says she launched her dream of being a business coach back in 2017 out of necessity. In that pivotal decision-making moment, she knew she could either give in to fear and do something safe (like get a job) or she could face her fears, take a big risk, and choose her dream instead. God used that practical necessity to bring her dream to life and today Katie is serving the clients she loves in the ways she always dreamed.

From Katie’s story, you’ll learn what to do when you’re feeling alone and unseen in your dream and how God meets you right there.

If you’ve debated starting a business but feel intimidated by everything you don’t know, Katie offers you the courage to believe that business skills can be learned by just about anybody.

    Hello Season Eight!!

I’m so glad to be back with you here on the podcast! A lot has happened over the summer—I don’t have to tell you that—but I’m so excited about what’s in store for us with Season Eight.

This quick little episode is a preview of what you can expect in this new season and how I want to support you as you pursue your God-shaped dream. I’ve found some real clarity on my own dream since I published my last episode in June; maybe you’ll notice that in the language I use here. 😊

But whether you’re new to the show or you’ve been here all along, I can’t wait to meet and connect with you. Please join my Insiders Facebook Group and get to know the other dreamers who are on this road with you. You won’t regret it (even though the rest of Facebook is kind of a hot mess right now)!

Next week I’ll be back with another interview: a conversation with business coach and fellow podcaster Katie Wussow. She’s amazingly talented at helping Christian creatives who are at the beginning of launching their business or their dreams. I’ve found her episodes to be really practical and challenging—in a good way!

Check out Katie’s show before next week. It's The Game Changer Podcast, found here or wherever you listen to podcasts.
