Dark Realms: The Forbidden City, China. Aug 09, 2026

Today’s Dark Realm has sincerely been one of my favourites to create.

The Forbidden City, a vast imperial complex that for more than five centuries housed emperors, concubines, servants, guards and some of the most closely guarded secrets in Chinese history. Behind its enormous red gates lies a place shaped by extraordinary wealth and power, but also confinement, rivalry, punishment and death—and according to generations of folklore, not everyone who entered those walls ever truly left them. In this episode, we explore three of the Forbidden City’s most enduring ghost stories, and for the first time I'm not convinced my ranking of each ghost is correct. The Forbidden City seems something very different from the previous Realms we've entered.
