Everything I know and don’t know about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce: Are we “amusing ourselves to death”? Oct 06, 2023

Show notes

TV tends to cater to what we want as a culture, but we’re more anxious, depressed, and lonely than ever. In a world that’s often all about us, why is this?

LGBTQ group claims Christian judge cannot be “fair and impartial” Oct 05, 2023

Show notes

A Texas LGBTQ advocacy group claimed a federal judge cannot be “fair and impartial” because of his Christian beliefs. It’s human nature when facing opposition and rejection to oppose and reject those we face. The “fight or flight” response is our automatic physiological reaction to events that are perceived as stressful or frightening. But it is precisely the wrong way for Christians to respond to our cultural opponents. So how should we engage our broken culture?

Kevin McCarthy removed as Speaker: Unprecedented events and foundational truth Oct 04, 2023

Show notes

House lawmakers voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker yesterday afternoon, the first time in US history that a speaker has been voted out. Meanwhile, another unprecedented event is unfolding away from the headlines with ramifications that are even more foundational for biblical Christians in a secularizing culture: the pope is signaling support for blessing same-sex unions.

Andy Stanley responds to the controversy around the Unconditional Conference Oct 03, 2023

Show notes

The Unconditional Conference hosted by Andy Stanley and North Point Community Church concluded last Friday, and details are beginning to emerge about what was taught across the two-day event. While there is much with which I disagree regarding the implications of Stanley's message, hearing the heart with which Stanley said it is helpful for responding to it in a way that is fair and honors God.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce continue to make news: A reflection on our best future Oct 02, 2023

Show notes

Article Description

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s dating relationship continues to generate headlines in stark contrast to news that directly affects us, such as the aversion of the government shutdown and America’s growing frustration with inflation and slow economic growth. Americans want to be “inspired by a new, optimistic future,” but this won’t begin with secular culture. It must begin with spiritual rebirth, and that must begin with us as Christians.

“My closest friend is a fish”: Responding to the loneliness and anxiety of our day Sep 29, 2023

Show notes

Diver Rex Colubra has posted that his best friend is a fish he named Elvis. Whether joking or not, the story illustrates Americans’ increasing loneliness and anxiety. How have we come to the place where half of all Americans have three close friends or fewer? And how might we as Christians be the antidote to this malady?

The Republican presidential debate and our fascination with the Roman Empire Sep 28, 2023

Show notes

The seven Republican presidential participants in last night’s debate took aim at each other, President Biden for his perceived failings, and former President Donald Trump for not attending. Across much of human history and in much of the world today, last night’s event would never have occurred. In this light, Dr. Jim Denison considers our cultural fascination with Rome and an urgent parallel between the Rome of old and the America of today.

The US government is facing a shutdown soon that could affect hundreds of thousands. Here we find another example of the fact that what happens in the halls of power affects people far from them. Let’s reflect on this reality in light of the most urgent moral issue of our time: abortion.
