Donald Trump’s address to the nation Jul 19, 2024

Show notes

Former president Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican nomination last night to cap off a four-day convention in Milwaukee. Toward the beginning of his address, Trump recounted the shooting in greater detail than many expected, then throughout the rest of his address, he would periodically speak of his gratitude to the Lord and of the nation’s need for God’s help. Brushes with death often leave a dramatic impact on our lives, but whether we choose to allow that impact to be fleeting or foundational will set the course for how others define our lives.

Is J. D. Vance’s story “an only-in-America tale”? Jul 17, 2024

Show notes

J. D. Vance’s nomination for vice president is being called an “only-in-America tale.” Our national ethos, as expressed in our founding declaration that “all men are created equal,” especially encourages the rise of individuals from obscurity to the highest levels of power. But recent decades have seen our nation transform from one of community values to individual values, and this reflects a deeper issue with how we see our relationship with the Creator and our need for a Savior.

Remembering Corey Comperatore: A “real life superhero” and the pathway to sacrificial courage Jul 16, 2024

Show notes

When shots rang out last Saturday at a rally for former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, Corey Comperatore shielded his wife and daughters with his body, giving his life for his family. He was an engineer and volunteer firefighter. While none of us can know the hour of our death, we can prepare for it. Today we discuss how to choose to live as Corey Comperatore did: with sacrificial courage and selfless love.

“It’s nothing short of miraculous.” Reflections on the attempted assassination of former President Trump Jul 15, 2024

Show notes

Donald Trump wrote on his social medial platform TruthSocial yesterday that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” allowing him to survive Saturday’s assassination attempt. The Wall Street Journal editorial board similarly wrote, “It’s nothing short of miraculous that Mr. Trump avoided death by a literal inch.” According to the New York Times, the picture of the bloodied former president, his fist raised, flanked by an American flag, is “already the indelible image of our era of political crisis and conflict.” If political rhetoric was in fact a motivating factor for the shooter, the tragedy further demonstrates the power of hateful speech to incite hateful actions.

Did the Republican party abandon the pro-life movement? Jul 12, 2024

Show notes

The Republican Party recently released its 2024 platform, outlining its goals and priorities should the November elections go its way. While the document comprises a list of twenty promises and ten chapters that go in depth on a variety of subjects, the changes to the party’s official stance on abortion have received the most attention. Many have sought to reframe the GOP’s stance on this issue to appeal to a wider range of voters. However, doing so risks losing the pro-life part of a base they’ve come to rely upon in the process. What is the criteria for being considered pro-life? How can believers navigate this issue without compromising their biblical convictions?

A new study demonstrates the amazing power of gratitude Jul 11, 2024

Show notes

Amidst all the bad news in the news this week, let’s focus today on some good news. A new study of gratitude and mortality among older adults found that those who more frequently noticed and felt grateful for positive experiences tended to live longer. As you will hear, this report is by no means an outlier. And, Scripture similarly commands us to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and to give thanks “always and for everything to God the Father” (Ephesians 5:20).

Why? How? And how does this discussion relate to the massive cultural issues we face today?

As NATO meets, President Biden “has absolutely no room for any sort of mistakes” Jul 10, 2024

Show notes

The thirty-two member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are observing its seventy-fifty anniversary this week in Washington, DC. Support for Ukraine will be an especially high priority escalated by Russia’s missile attack Monday that hit a children’s hospital and killed at least forty-one civilians.

Many are focusing on President Biden’s cognitive capacities at the NATO summit as it continues today in Washington, DC. A perceptive article in the Atlantic identifies the foundational issue in this controversy.

Hurricane Beryl’s destruction and President Biden’s future: The power of Mother Nature and Father Time Jul 09, 2024

Show notes

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane on record killed at least three people and knocked out power to nearly three million homes and businesses in Texas after devastating islands in the Caribbean.

President Biden wrote a letter yesterday to his “fellow Democrats” stating, “I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.” He told his favorite cable news program, “The bottom line here is, we’re not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere.” And he addressed his largest donors in a Zoom conference yesterday afternoon, declaring that he is “absolutely and unequivocally” staying in the race. Whatever you think of Mr. Biden’s cognitive and governing capacities, it remains true that “Father Time is undefeated.” Hurricane Beryl reminds us that Mother Nature is equally powerful.
