National Guard soldiers arrive in Washington, DC Aug 13, 2025

Show notes

National Guard troops began arriving in Washington, DC, yesterday as part of President Donald Trump’s historic federal takeover of the nation’s capital. Armored vehicles were seen at urban centers and tourist cities around the city last night. Whatever your view of the president’s action and the conditions that prompted it, no one can disagree that crime in our nation’s capital is too high. Whether National Guard troops can help or not remains to be seen. But even they cannot remedy the problem that underlies all our nation’s other problems, one that affects our safety, happiness, and grace.

Is Ukraine now willing to trade land for peace? Aug 12, 2025

Show notes

President Trump said yesterday that he will try to get back some territory for Ukraine when he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. He also stated that there would be “some swapping, changes in land” between Russia and Ukraine. Whether the world could or should trust a “peace” to which Mr. Putin agrees on these terms is another matter, an issue I explored in my new website article, “Vladimir Putin and the problem of autocratic power.” But why would Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agree to such an arrangement?

Article Description

President Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this Friday. In related news, Putin told the US he would halt his war with Ukraine in exchange for land in eastern Ukraine and global recognition of Russia’s claims to the territory. We also learned yesterday that the White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Alaska as well. How likely is it that Ukraine would make such a land exchange? Or that Putin would honor a peace achieved in this way? These questions point to a larger question foundational to the war and its global consequences.

How the Chinese AI company GoLaxy could change our lives: A reality that breaks God’s heart Aug 08, 2025

Show notes

With yesterday’s introduction of GPT-5, artificial intelligence is back in the news, with the focus largely on how its advancements will impact day-to-day life. But while that story is important, today we discuss a more subtle way that AI is likely to change our lives going forward: replacing real human connection and conviction with artificial relationships that always agree with you. But while users claim these conversations are “harmless fun,” the truth is that they are often relied upon most heavily by those who are least equipped to use them well. That’s a problem we cannot afford to ignore. But how should it be addressed?

Were the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki necessary? Aug 07, 2025

Show notes

Eighty years ago yesterday, the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. In total, an estimated two hundred thousand people were killed. Over the years, opinions have been sharply divided over whether the bombings were justified. So, on the anniversary of the only time nuclear bombs have ever been used in war, let’s ask if they were necessary. Then we’ll apply our discussion to an even more significant question, one that is relevant to each of us today.

Will Israel seek to occupy all of the Gaza Strip? Four options and a providential alternative Aug 06, 2025

Show notes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering ordering the complete reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media. However, senior officials have warned that the plan would endanger the remaining hostages, risk further international isolation of Israel, and require the IDF to administer a population in which Hamas fighters were still present. The idea of Israel occupying all of Gaza raises several questions, chief among them: What about the hostages?

Texas governor orders arrests for Democrats who left the state Aug 05, 2025

Show notes

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers left Texas yesterday, preventing the state House of Representatives from moving forward with a redrawn congressional map sought by President Trump. Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state police to find and arrest them, though state law enforcement is restricted to making arrests in Texas. Both parties over the years have gerrymandered political maps to advantage themselves, though such tactics have not typically gained political parties many seats over the years. However, a larger factor is at work here—one that is relevant to each of us and the future of our democracy.

Witkoff and Huckabee visit aid operation in Gaza Aug 04, 2025

Show notes

Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy, joined US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on a visit to a US-backed aid operation in Gaza on Friday. The Israeli military said two hundred trucks of aid were distributed by the UN and other organizations on Thursday, with hundreds more waiting to be picked up from border crossings inside Gaza. However, reports from the Gaza Strip claim very few supplies have made it into warehouses to be distributed to the population. The son of a founding Hamas leader said, “They don’t care for the Palestinian people. They do not regard human life.” How do we pray for the situation today?

Trump’s EPA reveals “largest deregulatory action” in history: Why climate change may save more lives than it costs Aug 01, 2025

Show notes

Lee Zeldin, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, announced earlier this week what he described as “the largest deregulatory action in the history of the United States.” While Zeldin and others in the administration have argued the cost of these regulations outpaces the environmental gains, their primary focus is less on the science behind climate change and more on the argument that Congress took shortcuts in granting regulatory powers to the EPA in the first place. Whether that assessment proves accurate will be for the courts to decide, but the attempt has sparked fresh debate over both climate change in general and the government’s role in combating it more specifically. And when it comes to that debate, relying on facts over narratives is essential.

Video of late-night brawl in Cincinnati makes headlines Jul 31, 2025

Show notes

A bloody, late-night brawl in downtown Cincinnati last weekend has generated national attention. Several people took videos of the attack, but only one person called 911. Video evidence shows the man and woman who were beaten to be white and their assailants to be black. A senior figure in the US Justice Department suggested that the attack may have been motivated by race and that suspects could also be charged with federal hate crimes. How can we form a cohesive culture that chooses to love and value our neighbor today?
