Ransom note received for Savannah Guthrie’s mother Feb 04, 2026

Show notes

Savannah Guthrie has withdrawn from hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony to focus on her family. As you know, her mother, Nancy Guthrie, has disappeared in Tucson; police believe she was taken against her will in a “possible kidnapping or abduction.” Ms. Guthrie’s disappearance is tragically not unusual in the US. In addition to abductions, elder fraud and abuse are epidemics, as hundreds of thousands of adults over the age of sixty are abused, neglected, or financially exploited each year. It’s been said that the way we treat people is the true measure of our character. As we’ll see today, this is both bad news and good news. The choice is ours.

Do you wish death were obsolete? Punxsutawney Phil, longer lifespans, and the providence of God Feb 03, 2026

Show notes

Article Description

For those who are ready for winter to be over, the bad news is that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday, predicting six more weeks of polar vortexes and misery for millions. He’s not, however, the only forecaster in the news today. The National Center for Health Statistics is reporting that US life expectancy has hit an all-time high. According to “Vitalists”, humanity has an “incredible moral duty” to “extend lifespan indefinitely.” While they admit that there is no current way to make death obsolete, that’s their goal. Here’s my confession: part of me wishes they had already succeeded.

Anti-ICE protests and the partial government shutdown: American governance and the path to our best future Feb 02, 2026

Article Description

Anti-ICE protests were staged in cities across the US over the weekend. Bikers also participated in over two hundred memorial rides for Alex Pretti across forty-three states. In other news, the US government partially shut down over the weekend as dozens of federal agencies saw their funding lapse at 12 a.m. Saturday. And President Trump named Kevin Warsh to become Federal Reserve chair, but the process for confirmation by the Senate may be in doubt. Here’s what these stories have in common: they illustrate features in America’s governance, not bugs. This is a fact that matters far beyond its political implications.

Is President Trump going to bomb Iran? Jan 30, 2026

Show notes

Neither Iran nor the US appears overly eager to budge on their negotiations, though President Trump has issued threats and presented four demands for peace. It makes sense that Iran’s leaders would be hesitant to show weakness, but pretending they are in a position of strength when they're not is only going to make matters worse for them. Throughout Scripture, we find examples of people who lacked the self-awareness to see their situation objectively. The truth is that when we forget who God is, it becomes far easier to forget who we are as well.

Two girls killed in a sledding accident and three boys drowned in an icy pond: Does the Lord cause all that happens? Jan 29, 2026

Article Description

Elizabeth Angle and Gracie Brito were high school sophomores and best friends in Frisco, a suburb north of Dallas, who tragically died in a sledding accident. I cannot imagine these families’ grief and am so sorry for their loss. I am praying for them, asking God to be their help and peace in these terrible days. I’m also praying for a mother whose three young sons fell through an icy pond Monday and died. If God is truly sovereign, did he cause their pain? If not, how can he be truly sovereign? Either way, how can I trust him to be the Father I hope he is?

Article Description

Let’s step away from the news today to discuss the way we consume the news. The Guardian asks, “Are we living in a golden age of stupidity?” Andrew Budson, a Boston University neurologist who specializes in memory disorders, explains our problem: we are using technology for the wrong purposes. If being isolated from the world harms our brains, but engaging with the world entangles us in its lostness, what is the way forward? We find answers today in the lives of Enoch and Noah.

President Trump signals ICE de-escalation in Minnesota Jan 27, 2026

Show notes

President Trump dispatched his border czar to Minnesota after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by ICE agents, a tragedy now under review amid sharply conflicting accounts from federal officials, witnesses, and media reports. Whom we blame largely depends on what we think we already know. This is how nearly all of us know nearly everything we know, especially in a post-truth culture where subjectivity replaces objectivity. Only a life shaped from the inside out by Christ can give us the wisdom, compassion, and character our fractured culture so desperately needs.

Trees exploding in Minnesota and frostbite in five minutes: A “generational” winter storm and the solidarity of our souls Jan 26, 2026

Show notes

A “devastating dose of winter weather” over the weekend left nearly 820,000 without power, canceled more than twelve thousand flights, and put twenty-three states and Washington, DC, under emergency declarations. A “generational storm” like this is one of the few things that can still unite us in an otherwise fragmented, polarized culture where even media and pop culture no longer hold us together. If it takes a storm endangering much of the country to remind us how connected we are, what does that say about our future? Today, we discuss the personal finitude and mortality this storm revealed and seek greater intimacy with the Lord who still calms stormy seas.

Faith in the face of an ice storm: Is God a parachute in my plane? Jan 23, 2026

Show notes

As a major ice storm approaches that could affect more than two hundred million people, we reflect on our collective impotence in the face of nature, even in the most technologically advanced age in human history. Faced with forces we cannot control, it makes sense that every civilization has turned to religion—but in a post-Christian culture, faith is often dismissed as a placebo effect or outdated superstition. The question, then, is whether we relate to Jesus transactionally—as a “weather god,” a “healing god,” or a “spare tire” in our car—or whether we experience the deeper reality of the Christian faith.

President Trump rules out Greenland tariffs and military force Jan 22, 2026

Show notes

Article Description

President Trump announced yesterday that he was canceling his planned tariffs on US allies in Europe over US control of Greenland. The announcement came after he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed to the “framework of a future deal” on Arctic security. Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump also stated that he was ruling out military force to acquire the island. Such reticence is understandable. A basic principle undergirding the world order is that nations are sovereign and that no country has the right to impose its values on another. Let’s apply this thesis to the most urgent moral issue of our day.
