A church employs the unemployed to feed those in need: Two responses to our fear of inadequacy Mar 26, 2020

Show notes

The news broke this morning that unemployment claims in the US surged by 3.28 million last week. This is the highest number ever recorded in a single week, more than quadruple the previous record of 695,000 claims in October 1982. For perspective: the US saw barely 200,000 unemployment claims just three weeks ago.

It's easy to read today's news and be overwhelmed. We can feel afraid that all we can do is not all that needs to be done.

This fear can be both disabling and empowering. Let's discuss the difference.

Prince Charles tests positive for coronavirus: Why our greatest fear may not be what you think it is Mar 25, 2020

Show notes

Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, has been diagnosed with coronavirus. His wife has reportedly tested negative for the virus.

In other news, Hillsong NYC pastor Carl Lentz confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19. The virus killed playwright Terrence McNally, retired New York Times reporter Alan Finder, and Dezann Romain, age thirty-six, a school principal from Brooklyn.

Of course, coronavirus is not the only mortality-related subject in the news. Kenny Rogers’ death reminds us that celebrities are mortal.

The problem is, it’s human nature to think that what happens to others is less likely to happen to us.

These Special Editions are intended to speak to breaking news with a “fear not” or other word of assurance from Scripture. Today, let’s consider a less-obvious fear we should confront.

Put succinctly: Our greatest fear should not be the fear of death, but the fear that we are not afraid of it.

Harvard president tests positive for COVID-19: When you’re afraid that all we can do is not enough Mar 24, 2020

Show notes

The president of Harvard University and his wife just announced that they have tested positive for COVID-19. Their statement highlights the fact that no one is immune to this disease.

As I write this Daily Article Special Edition, congressional and White House officials say they expect to reach a deal today on a nearly $2 trillion measure aimed at easing the economic damage from the coronavirus epidemic.

Negotiators are laboring in the shadow of what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calls “the most serious threat to Americans’ health in over a century and quite likely the greatest risk to America’s jobs and prosperity that we’ve seen since the Great Depression.”

We are facing an unprecedented challenge, at least in my lifetime. We are looking, therefore, for unprecedented responses from medical experts and national leaders.

Our fear is that this bill, massive though it will be, will not be enough.

Will it sustain our economy until we can all go back to work? How long will that be? What will be the permanent consequences of this crisis? What will “normal” look like, assuming we return to it?

If you’re afraid that all our resources are not enough to meet the challenges of our day, I have some good news for you.
