An often-overlooked verse that seems irrelevant but changes everything Apr 27, 2020
    Show notes

Today’s Special Edition will be different. Rather than focusing on something in the news which calls us to fight fear with faith, we will focus on a single verse in Scripture that calls us to do the same.

Over the weekend, I came upon this statement: “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 26:1).

As I read the verse, I sensed the clear leading of the Holy Spirit to reflect on it.

These reflections became this article as I became convinced that this ancient command speaks to every dimension of our lives and world.

Teenager creates ear guards to help with facemasks: God uses people who don’t know they’re being used Apr 24, 2020
    Show notes

One of the fears we all face is the fear of being unknown and unloved.

I cannot see my Father, but he can see me. And he is working in our world in ways we may not see but that are nonetheless very real.

For instance, Paul Coschignano is a 13-year-old who's used his 3D printer to create ear guards that will relieve the stress of wearing a facemask for hours on end. He wants to make them available to anyone who needs one.

Also, the well-known hymn "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" offers further insight into how much our Father loves us.

A most unusual television reporter: Giving our ‘utmost’ to God’s ‘highest’ Apr 23, 2020
    Show notes

Felipe Verduzco reported the news recently on Zoom. There was no teleprompter available, so he used cue cards. Even though many reporters are working from home in more casual attire, he wore a full suit while on camera.

Here’s what makes his time on camera especially newsworthy: Felipe is in first grade and reported the news to his fellow classmates.

You don’t need me to convince you that these are difficult days for everyone. In the midst of a pandemic unprecedented in our lifetime, one of our most common fears is that all we can do is not all that needs to be done. We feel powerless and wonder if our best is good enough.

Here’s the good news: as we work, God works. What can we do that positions us to partner with him most effectively?

Oswald Chambers' classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest can help us answer that question.

The ‘three blessings exercise’: The path to gratitude that changes our lives and culture Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

Yale psychology professor Laurie Santos teaches an online course on happiness that has reached more than a million people. She recommends something called the “three blessings exercise.”

Counting our blessings even in hard times is a biblical exercise: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

However, there’s a way to experience our Father’s presence that transcends an occasional attitude of gratitude.

Two sisters die from pandemics 102 years apart: Finding hope in surprising places Apr 21, 2020
    Show notes

Selma Esther Ryan died last week from coronavirus at an assisted living facility in Austin, Texas. She was ninety-six years old. Her older sister, Esther, died at the age of five from the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

The deaths of two sisters from two pandemics are just one of the unusual aspects of this tragedy. Another is the timing of Selma’s death.

The Associated Press reports: “For a generation, mid-April has delivered some of America’s most cataclysmic moments," like the Oklahoma City bombings and the Columbine High School shootings.

In these fearful days, it is tempting to look for hope in the wrong places. But Christians know the source of true hope.
