King Charles III to address joint session of Congress: A reflection on monarchy and human flourishing Apr 28, 2026

Show notes

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived yesterday in Washington, DC, where the king will address both houses of Congress today. The first visit of a reigning monarch to the US was similarly pragmatic, hoping positive coverage of the 1939 royal tour would win support for an Anglo-American alliance against Nazi Germany. Now commentators are watching to see if King Charles and President Trump can repair the relationship between the two nations damaged by differences over the war with Iran. While Americans do not serve an earthly king, we can use the visit of a foreign ruler to reflect on the need for a king of our hearts today.

White House Correspondents’ Dinner suspect to be charged today Apr 27, 2026

Show notes

Shortly after the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner began Saturday evening, a thirty-one-year-old man armed with two guns ran past a Secret Service security checkpoint, intending to kill President Trump. Between 1875 and 2004, fifty-nine primary national leaders were assassinated, averaging approximately one every other year. And none of the rest of us are immune from that mortality. Something in us doesn’t want to admit that we could be next. None of us has any plausible hope that we will be the first humans to escape death forever. But dying somehow doesn’t feel as real as all that.

AI engine decides which religion is the most rational Apr 24, 2026

Show notes

Which worldview best explains reality, and which one does so while requiring the fewest unsupported assumptions? Jay Atkins asks an AI engine to evaluate all the major world religions for the highest plausibility. The New Testament consistently states that salvation comes only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only person in history to die and rise from the grave, never to die again. If only Jesus has died to pay for our sins and risen from the grave, only Jesus can forgive our sins and grant us salvation.

Israel to promote LGBTQ festival near Sodom and Gomorrah Apr 23, 2026

Show notes

This week, we’ve discussed the power of Scripture to change hearts and lives when we submit to its truth in accountable community. Let’s apply this discussion to the most crucial moral issue of our time: abortion. Our society is convinced that illegality should be defined by harm done to others (as with LGBTQ behavior). But in such a culture where sons and daughters are sacrificed, it is especially critical that God’s people embrace and advance biblical morality, whatever the cost to ourselves. The sicker the patient, the more urgent the cure.

Article Description

“Just do the right thing.” As the “America Reads the Bible” continues in Washington, DC, this week, we explore the power of Scripture to change hearts and lives when we submit to its truth in the power of the Spirit. Public figures’ moral failures highlight the challenge of putting our beliefs into practice and point to a principle evangelicals overlook to our peril. The world might be tougher than we are, but let’s be smart enough to try to learn from those smarter than we are. God’s word is most transformative in our lives when we choose to obey it in accountable community with others.

Supreme Court to decide major LGBTQ school case Apr 21, 2026

Show notes

Reading the Scriptures can be a powerful encounter with the voice of the living God. But the Bible must be applied if its truths are to be transforming. Our nation was founded on the declaration that “all men are created equal” and it should be possible for us to live with holistic holiness, completely obedient to every dictate of Scripture. However, our founding declaration does not prescribe such biblical thinking and living. As a result, morality is under constant tension, litigation, and jurisprudence in our secularized society.

“America Reads the Bible” continues in Washington, DC Apr 20, 2026

Show notes

“America Reads the Bible” began Saturday at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC. Over seven days, nearly five hundred participants will read the Bible aloud from Genesis to Revelation. Daily readings are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you wonder whether America needs a spiritual and moral awakening, you need only read the news. In such a broken world, how does reading the words of an ancient book out loud help? Is this merely a performative gesture, perhaps with political motives? The answer is more relevant to our souls and national future than one might think.

In President Trump’s feud with the pope, who is right? Is America’s war with Iran just? Apr 17, 2026

Show notes

Request your copy of Wrestling with God today!

The feud between President Trump and Pope Leo XIV continued on Thursday, when the pope decried that “The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants,” in what many took to be a thinly veiled shot at the president. Even if at least parts of the pope’s critiques may be valid, that does not mean his statements were wise. There’s a lot more to Christian teaching than just the gospel, but it’s crucial that we keep a clear view of where we should draw that line. The gospel pertains to matters essential to salvation, and whether the war in Iran is just does not come anywhere close to clearing that bar. Unfortunately, the pope is far from the only person to have ever erred in that regard.

Camp Mystic director breaks down in tears during trial Apr 16, 2026

Show notes

Testimony in the Camp Mystic evidential hearing concluded yesterday in an Austin courtroom. The lawsuit was brought by the family of eight-year-old Cile Steward, who died in the July 4, 2025, flood and whose body has not been recovered. Her family is fighting attempts to reopen the camp until her remains are found. So many of the families involved in this horrific tragedy are still grieving. When God chooses not to intervene in our suffering, we can be tempted to doubt his character—and some doubts are more visceral than others, as we’ll explore today.

Your “Tax Freedom Day” is approaching Apr 15, 2026

Article Description

“Tax Freedom Day” will soon be here. As the Tax Project website explains, this is the day when you have earned enough to pay your combined federal, state, and local tax contributions for the year. For the rest of the year, you can finally begin working for and paying yourself. On one hand, I’m grateful for the benefits of the taxes I pay. On the other hand, it feels liberating to think that everything I earn from this point forward is mine to do with as I wish. These two “hands” go together. We have the freedoms we experience in America in significant part because we pay for them by supporting the governmental agencies who do for us what we would otherwise have to do for ourselves. I believe this capitalistic mindset to be the greatest single impediment to spiritual awakening in the Western world.
