All of us at some time in our lives will face a time of darkness and despair. It could be financial ruin, divorce, a health crisis, or a shameful mistake. Chances are that when we are struggling through a difficult time, we won't let anyone know about it. When someone asks us how we are, we'll say, "I'm fine."

In this case FINE means:

F*cked up
Insecure
Neurotic and
Emotional

We tend to take our frustrations out on those around us, blind to the damage we are causing. Addictions can take over when we feel like there is no other way to calm the chaos.

We're excited to bring Joe Burnham back on the show. He is a Dad Edge Alliance mastermind member who was on the podcast previously to talk about his life after getting arrested in a prostitution sting. Today he tells us how no one is beyond redemption and that it is possible to recover from a downfall by turning shame and regret into power.

Digital Minimalism with Cal Newport May 06, 2019

Today's show is about distraction. Tech can be our best friend and worst enemy. Our devices are no longer normal telephones. They've become our constant companions. Texts, emails, social media and loads of content compete for our attention every hour of the day. We are more distracted and overwhelmed than ever before. It not only affects our work life but can do irreparable damage to our family life as well. Will our kids grow up missing their parents who are always on their phone?

Cal Newport is a bestselling author and the father of three boys. You won't find him on any social media, because he doesn't have any. He the author of six books, including, most recently, the New York Times bestseller, Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World.

More kids are suffering from anxiety and depression than in any other previous generation. What is it like to raise kids who suffer from anxiety and depression? How can partners align without pointing fingers and being hurtful?

I went on the Parenting Survival Podcast to talk about the struggles I had parenting my son who has anxiety issues. Most dads are ill equipped to manage this problem, and a special skill set is required along with understanding and patience. I discuss how to use emotional validation and tactical empathy to connect and communicate with our kids as well as our wives. I also give advice on how ladies can better communicate with their men without putting them on the defensive.
