Straight Talk - Race & Racism in America Part 3 Jul 22, 2020
    Show notes

They start with a blood boiling clip from an interview where Charles Barkley talks with Richard Spencer, who is known for his activism on behalf of the Alt-Right. They have a poignant discussion regarding white America’s identification of being a racist, only tied to extremist, nationalist or white supremacist ideologies.

The pair also unpack Micro and Macro aggressions as it correlates to Racism in America. Micro Aggression is a subtle or unconscious discrimination that could be classified as polite racism. Macro aggression is overt aggression toward blacks. They masterfully break down the 13th Amendment and discuss how the language facilitated a loophole that perpetuated increased incarcerations of blacks.

With this being the last of the 3 part discussion on “Race and Racism in America,” Kojo and Cedric give palatable ways white and black people can work through this together. They do challenge that white people have a large role in educating themselves and making the choice to have conversation with blacks. Finally, there is a clever and unorthodox topic regarding a prominent figure in our nations history. “What would you do?”

Straight Talk - Race & Racism in America Part 2 Jul 22, 2020

Cedric and Kojo discuss James Baldwin’s contributions and his famous quote "How long do you want me to wait for your progress?". Then the pair dive right into “The Faces of the Facts" segment - George Floyd, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner are high-lighted and then deep dive into the Breonna Taylor story. The grueling and inconsistent version of events surrounding the murder of the 26-year-old African American EMT. Heartbreaking 911 call over-viewed. What is the utility and reasoning for use of lethal force my US law enforcement?

Amy Cooper (the former investment firm VP) weaponizes herself after a dispute over her unleashed dog. The brief interaction with black bird watcher Christian Cooper, ultimately costs Amy Cooper her job, dog and now faces criminal charges. But are those charges just in vain? Can racism be respectable or delivered politely? State of New York Governor Cuomo has signed bills into law addressing a number of these issues.

Anecdotal stories surrounding interactions with law enforcement. How those experiences have shaped and impacted the relationship and perception of police with our hosts who are well mannered, upstanding members of their communities. What black men do to humanize themselves and minimize the idea of them being a threat to police. As well as a story recalling racism demonstrated in a kindergarten assemble.

The episode closes out with the always thought provoking “What would you do?” segment. Is it worse for an innocent man to be jailed or guilty men to be free?

Straight Talk - Race & Racism in America Part 1 Jul 22, 2020
    Show notes

Cedric and Kojo discuss the impact of racism and the trauma to society it causes. How and why citizens respond to recorded videos of extrajudicial executions. Is there a difference between a rioter and looter?
The pair reflect on Martin Luther King, his mission and his reputation prior to his assassination vs how he’s currently celebrated universally! During the “Face the Facts” segment statistics and fact-based evidence drive the conversation. “Stop and frisk” rationale is questioned, the correlation between the disparity of prison sentences and suspension rates for Blacks and Whites. The Serena Williams child birth story supports an ugly narrative and the disappointing global statistical comparisons will shock the listeners.
Do you discuss race and racism with your friends from other races? If not, are you really friends? Review of what the “Racist pyramid” entails and the significance Apathy plays in 21st century society. Is ignorance the same as innocence? A comic book villain doesn’t think so.
Where do we go from here? How to transform our views on issues, through relationships. "People are hard to hate up close." What does the Path to Resolution looks like? Anecdotal real-life tangible examples of things ALL of us can do to bridge the gap in the fight against racism. Finally, a controversial figure is the topic of this week’s “What would you do?” segment.
