You should also understand what motivates someone, as this can reveal their personality and emotional makeup. In my business, we use social media primarily to get content and information out to our niche clientele, but that’s about it. If I didn’t have this business, I would probably get off social media altogether. Recently I was told that a former employee was working for someone else now—something I didn’t know because I was blocked.

As a business owner, giving the gift of having a team member move on isn’t always easy, but it often is necessary. At times, the reactions and outcomes from these situations can be triggering. Mostly everyone can relate to this, whether it’s former employees turned to critics or former friends.

When I first started as a young business owner, I leaned on my team heavily. At the time I thought there was great synergy, but now looking back, I see things differently. Loyalty became performative and conversations got quiet when I came into the room.

The reality is that sometimes your most toxic employees are the most profitable. In my situation, my employees weren’t just moving on. Their strategy was about dismantling my success; not just winning, but having me lose. This betrayal was confusing and led me to question my judgement.

These cracks made me realize it was time to rebuild the business and rebuild myself. Success exposes insecurities and feelings of inadequacy in family and in friends. In a perfect world, your triumphs would inspire people, not make them feel bitter. Just remember that the louder the critics, the greater the proof that you’re making waves. Estrogen Does NOT Cause Breast Cancer Dec 02, 2024

Does estrogen therapy cause breast cancer? The simple answer is no. This is a hot topic in health circles—and you may have even been told by your doctor before that estrogen does cause it. This misinformation does a very real disservice to women, which is why setting the record straight is so important.

When we look at the data, what we actually see is that estradiol kills cancer cells. So why isn’t this information widely available? In large part, it’s because hormones, like estrogen and testosterone, aren’t patentable—so there’s no money in it for the big pharmaceutical companies.

Research hasn’t really confirmed the exact cause of breast cancer. What we do know is that dysfunctional cells, somehow created, continue to grow and turn into cancer. There are genetic risk factors as well as lifestyle risk factors too. While many women are scared of breast cancer, we are highly more likely to suffer from heart disease.

Estrogen is not just overlooked in cancer, it’s villainized. The reality is that hormone replacement therapy can increase survival rates. There are many different ways to go about taking estrogen therapy. There are synthetic forms, which we don’t use, and bio-identical forms. You can take it orally or transdermally, each of which have their own unique benefits.

The only women who may not be considered for estrogen treatment are those who haven’t yet gone through menopause. Pre-menopausal women still produce estrogen, so taking it could lead to excess estrogen effects. Estrogen therapy should be used in conjunction with progesterone, not progestins.

Leadership isn’t just about being in charge and making decisions. It’s about having the privilege to pave the way for a team, but it isn’t always easy to find the courage to take that on. When you’re a leader, you have to make tough calls and decisions that you are willing to stand firm on.

Most people are not born leaders. Becoming a leader is truly something you step—or even evolve—into. It also places a responsibility on you to create core values in your business, and these values withstand whether you are in the business or not.

If you’ve identified a problem in your business, as a leader you must discover the source. If it’s value-based, your answer will come with greater clarity because your values are your ultimate guide. If it’s a will problem (for example, if a team member lacks the will), you have to decide if you can ignite them again or not. If it’s a skills issue, it’s something you may want to work on with the team member.

The right people on your team will embrace their responsibilities and acknowledge their part of a larger whole. The wrong people will see their role as “just a job.” Your confidence in the right people should grow over time. If someone isn’t a great fit for your team, you might feel a lack of trust.

If you’re not sure if someone is a right fit for your business or not, ask yourself this: how would you feel if they walked out tomorrow? If you feel relieved, your answer is clear. Be honest and courageous enough to make the right decisions. If you don’t have that in you, then you aren’t exercising true leadership.

Danielle first tried hormone replacement therapy with testosterone several years ago. After experiencing her first hot flash and other symptoms of menopause, she decided it was time to commit. My Journey to Building a Self-Managing Business Aug 12, 2024

I recently read a book called The Self-Managing Company by Dan Sullivan, and in this episode, I’m going to share the key aspects I took away from it. This book is for entrepreneurs who need to be hands-off in more aspects of their business, but it’s also great for people who want to work on delegating in their personal lives too.

Freeing yourself from the nitty-gritty tasks in your business frees you up to look at the big picture and focus on growth. Every entrepreneur wants a self-managing company, but you can’t build one if there’s no one to do the work—which means you have to bring people into your business and create a culture around that too.

Think of your ABC activities: activities that become annoying, boring, or ones that captivate you. Your role should shift to doing less A and B activities and more C activities. Delegating and automating as much as possible is crucial to making this transition. Considering how you price your services is also important if you want to scale.

You also want to consider your ideals versus your goals. Ideals can’t be measured—and therefore, they can’t be reached. That’s why making goals is so much more important. Wishes illuminate your path, but making SMART goals is how you actually get there.

What’s amazing about being an entrepreneur is that you get to organize your system from scratch. Identifying the unique abilities of others and hiring a diverse team can help round out your support. It also means that you get to operate within your unique abilities.

Testosterone isn’t something we tend to think of when considering hormone replacement therapy for women—but the truth is that testosterone is important for females too. Without the right balance of testosterone, women will notice significant shifts in their libido and other aspects of their lives too.

Testosterone is produced in the ovaries—a fact that helps us appreciate just how significant of a role it plays in women’s health. Women in the prime of their sexual wellness tend to have more optimal levels of testosterone. The adverse effects of testosterone that give some people pause only happen when one is taking way above and beyond optimal amounts of it.

The sooner you can initiate hormone replacement therapy, the better your results will be. Current studies have shown that there are no adverse side effects when dosed within the proper ranges. Yet, when looking for support for their mood, libido, or other health issues, women are often not offered testosterone as a possible solution.

Birth Control Pills, Fertility, and More Jul 15, 2024

Oral birth control pills affect a woman’s fertility and health—yet the implications of taking these pills is often overlooked. These pills work by suppressing ovulation to prevent pregnancy, and your ovaries are shut down from producing eggs via the hypothalamus. Although you may bleed on your period, it’s not the same as a natural cycle.

The biggest risk with birth control pills is a risk for blood clots, which can cause a stroke. More commonly, these pills can impact mood and libido. When your serotonin is suppressed, you may become depressed. When your testosterone is tampered down, your libido suffers.

Women on hormonal contraception are 1-2 times more likely to be on antidepressants. Prolonged use of oral contraception pills can also lead to deficiencies in important micronutrients like vitamin D and folate. There is also a major reduction in trace minerals like magnesium, zinc, and coenzyme Q10.

Despite these potential side effects, these pills are widely available and prescribed to combat a variety of issues. Interestingly enough, birth control pills can also change who you’re attracted to. When you cycle naturally, you’re more likely to pick partners with more diverse genetics, whereas you’re likely to choose someone more similar to you when you’re on birth control.

A woman’s body works together in synchronicity naturally, and hormones have a powerful impact on our bodies and overall health. Women need to know the risks of going on the pill, especially from a young age. Medical establishments might be fine with allowing women to take these pills long term, but we deserve informed consent.

Continuing your education can also open doors as you work to scale your business. It helps you figure out what direction you want to go in, and niche opportunities allow you to be very specific about what you’re aligned with. Remember that companies offering education always have an agenda, which is to get you to use their product.

It’s easy for aesthetic practices to grow, but it’s not always easy to get them to scale. If you're one business and one brand, it’s important to streamline the experience for your patients so that they always know what to expect. From an SOP and complication management perspective, aligning everyone in your business is key.

So much can happen in your business if you’re willing to let go—and let the people who work for you showcase their unique abilities. Scaling provides an opportunity to fine-tune your business in so many different ways because it forces you to look at how you can do things better, from internal procedures to advertising.

Starting a business doesn’t automatically make you a leader, but it does give you the opportunity to become one. While it’s tempting to be overly flexible and friendly with your team, it doesn’t serve your growth. In fact, it could even backfire. The best thing you can do is incentivize your team to work towards a common goal transparently and equally.

You also need to be open to brutal honesty so that you can take feedback, even when it’s not positive. Being a thoughtful person also goes a long way when you’re in a leadership role.

Leadership is not about changing the world, nor an untouchable concept that not everyone will experience. It’s really about the tiny moments where you’re creating interpersonal connection for the greater common goal. Remember that people want to be a part of what you’re doing, otherwise they wouldn’t be working for you.

There are three business roles you will fill on your evolution. When you start out, you are the provider; the hands-on person. Eventually, you will become the manager, organizer, and problem solver. Ultimately, what you want to do is fulfill the role of true entrepreneurship and become the visionary and innovator. Many business owners get stuck in the first role.

It’s crucial to create systems to set yourself apart. Create infrastructure to anchor the business. Your business should have its own soul and its own heartbeat. This requires you to look at the business as a whole outside of the role you play and the services you provide.

In this episode we’re going to talk about three ways that people respond to you when you’re in a growth phase. The growth can be personally, spiritually, in your career, and more. As you are on a path of personal transformation, the reactions of others may make you question yourself.

The first way that people may respond is the cheerleader. These are the people who see your growth and are genuinely inspired, plus they don’t really compare themselves to you. Cheerleaders will likely be people who have walked a similar path, or they could be from the small sector of people that are just naturally so kind.

Next up is the eclipser. These people find your growth to be too much to handle, and they don’t necessarily drag you down, but they slowly exit your life. They’re probably friends or family members that are comfortable with the old you and think the new you is intimidating.

Finally, there’s the crab mentality. If there is a bucket of crabs and one tries to climb out, the others will literally drag the escapee back down. This is a natural phenomenon, not just a metaphor. This mentality from people you know can be overt, but it can also be very subtle, such as a passive aggressive comment here and there. If you do manage to escape the “bucket,” it can bring upon existential loneliness that comes with the territory.

Navigating this loneliness is key. You have to develop mental resilience that filters out discouragement. Meditation, journaling, expressing gratitude, and setting really clear boundaries are great ways to strengthen yourself. Also, when you see someone jumping to the next level, be sure to become their cheerleader.

One of the greatest gifts of entrepreneurship is hindsight. Hindsight is a tool to help you assess where you are now so you can make necessary changes and move forward. It’s helpful to reflect on what could have been done differently to help yourself and also help others who may be earlier on in their business building journey.

When you are starting out, set your business up as if it will be huge regardless of how big you plan for it to be. It’s much harder to go back and change standard operating procedures, key performance indicators, team member expectations, and especially payroll once the ball gets rolling. Setting the standard in the beginning will save you the headache of negotiating down the road.

Get into the nitty-gritty of your business plan. Going into detail with regards to legal structure, taxes, ownership structure, and expense tracking are not the most exciting parts of starting a business, but they are vital aspects. The Truth of Melasma - Innovative Technologies and Updates May 15, 2023

I really want to talk about melasma. When I came into medical dermatology, I was really unfamiliar with it. 10 years later, we know a little more about it as well as some treatment options. There was a patient we were treating at the first practice I worked at who had really bad melasma, and looking back, I can’t believe what we were doing. I think a lot of people still don’t know the best steps to take.

There’s a genetic component that is causing people to be more susceptive to melasma, and it’s been reported in 41-61% of patients in Brazil. Skin pigmentation really does follow an inheritance pattern. There’s also an inflammation component that I don’t think we were appreciating until recently.

We’re now at the point where we can really look at melasma, accept that there’s no cure, and determine the best treatment. First of all, sun protection is key, and it should be started early. You should use a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical one, as chemical sunscreens can actually flare parts of the melasma.

Hydroquinone is another topical treatment, and it interferes with the melasma genesis. It prohibits DNA/RNA synthesis that alters the formation of melasma. However, hydroquinone can cause some rebound pigmentation in the long-term. Azelaic is another good topical treatment, and it can be used during pregnancy whereas hydroquinone cannot.

There are also some oral treatments that need more research, but moving to in-office methods, chemical peels are fantastic. There are also people that will use IPL or BBL lasers, but I never would. It’s not a solution, it’s a bandaid. We certainly don’t have all the answers for treating melasma right now, but some devices are really helping us find good solutions.

What would it look like to have all categories at an 8, 9, or 10? This exercise helps you set goals and balance your life. It’s helpful to revisit once or twice a year, or however often you feel is helpful. It will help you create awareness, and even have a positive influence on your relationships.

Your past does not equal your future. Your future is unknown, but you can become more intuitive about your future by living intentionally. Your past is unique, and so is your future.

Navigating the Growing Pains of Leadership with Emotional Intelligence Apr 12, 2023

The practice of aesthetic medicine is about more than just delivering a medical service. The answer is not always injecting Botox. There’s a lot of body dysmorphic disorder in our world, and sometimes the treatment is to refer a client to someone that can help them more than we can.

Besides the use of emotional intelligence with clients, it’s also a very important skill when interacting with our staff. Right now, my business is going through massive change that will ultimately benefit everyone on our team. However, the phase of transition doesn’t feel good for everyone at the beginning. People that have been with me since day one might feel like their influence on the company isn’t as important as it expands.

Because of the concerns from my team, I implemented a time management system. Additionally, we recently did a company values workshop to emphasize and maintain our core values as we grow.

Another thing I’ve done to combat this fear is to celebrate milestones and successes. It’s really exciting to feel like we’re making valuable contributions to the company’s successes and wins, but also that individuals are recognized. There are a lot of challenges as you grow and expand. Recognize that you can fail as you’re growing, but scaling is where you can replicate people that are so incredible.

Clarity in these times of growing pain has been so powerful. We’re all leaders in many parts of our lives. Remember that you can lean into the change. Any time you meet resistance, what does that tell you?

Boundaries: Why Saying “No” is So Important Apr 10, 2023

Boundaries are a crucial tool to achieve a work/life balance that will help you gain clarity and maintain focus on what really matters to you. Learning to say “no” in order to have more sounds counterintuitive. Oftentimes, saying no is challenging, and turning down opportunities makes us wonder if we are missing out. This is because not every opportunity you are presented with will be aligned with your ultimate goals.

This can be especially difficult for women, as women are socially conditioned to be people-pleasing, put others first, and agreeable. However, remember that this conditioning can side-track you from your long-term goals. Saying “no” to someone else can mean saying “yes” to yourself, your family time, and your freedom.

Exploration into your own thoughts and behaviors to learn why saying “no” or creating boundaries can be hard in the moment will ultimately keep you focused on your “why.” You’ll also focus on the people in your life you’re doing this work for.

Boundaries around communication, family time, and self-care through programs or procedures such as a time management tools can streamline your work so you can stay on task and leave the work at work. You can also create clarity for yourself of your wants and needs through journaling to keep you on track. This will help you stay authentic to yourself.

Saying “yes” to every opportunity that arises in the relentless pursuit of success can detract from your time and your freedom. Your job should support your life, not consume it.

On this episode of Curated Beauty we’re talking about mindset, worthiness, and why you can achieve anything and unlock your potential when you understand why these two aspects are so important. The perfect example is professional athletes. Consider how many of them have inspired others just by showing who they could become.

Take Priest Holmes, for example. He has had so many setbacks in his NFL career, even going undrafted. He was recruited based on his character, not only on what he accomplished. It all came down to his attitude and his motivation to be great. Eventually, he became the king of fantasy football. Compare that to when no one was interested in him at all.

If you’ve started a business and you’re taking off running, you might be able to relate to that feeling of being perceived as coming out of nowhere. Mindset and worthiness, these two concepts that are so intertwined, influence how we feel about ourselves. In turn, they also influence how we teach the world to view us.

When you have the right mindset, you acknowledge that life is happening for you as opposed to happening to you. When you recognize your worthiness, you believe in your worth of receiving love and joy. For many people, this is damaged when you are a child. When you feel unworthy, you hold back and settle for less.

It’s essential to cultivate a growth mindset and worthiness to achieve your growth potential and lead a fulfilling life. Embrace challenges and setbacks. Believe in your abilities and talents. Defluencing: Are Influencers Running Our Lives? Mar 20, 2023

Have you heard of “defluencing”? On this episode of Curated Beauty we’re talking about this term, which is becoming a movement across social media platforms. Defluencing describes the undoing of social media influence, and it has been used to address the negative impacts of influencing on social media.

Recently, TV personality Kristin Cavallari came out and said she thinks Botox and lasers are a waste of time. Following this, she invited people to ask her questions about skincare. Interestingly enough, she has just come out with her own skincare line. She also said some things about Botox that aren’t actually true, according to the research.

She is sharing information she doesn’t have a firm grasp on. So, where is this coming from? It does seem like she has an agenda. Looking at cases of affiliate marketing exploitation, influencers need to be transparent and be held accountable for the information they share. There has been an increase in the purchasing of counterfeit products and attempts to inject them personally or with the assistance of a non-professional.

Yet, social media also plays an important role in creating supportive communities. It can be a valuable tool when you’re building a business. It’s a great way to share information about skin products that actually work, and which ones contain ingredients you want to avoid.

That said, it’s easy to get caught up on the amount of content available. The pressure to create tons of content and thoughtfully respond to every comment and message can be overwhelming. There are downsides to social media and the influencing that happens, for sure, but it can also bring a lot of positives too when you go about it ethically.

A Trip to Texas and the Latest Advancements in Dermal Fillers Mar 11, 2023

On this episode of Curated Beauty, Jessica opens up about her recent trip to Texas, including who she met, what she learned, and the beverage she discovered and can’t wait to share with friends. She was invited on this trip by Allergan Medical Institute to train on the newest, FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler called Volux XC. This is intended to be used on the jawline to provide a contoured and defined look.

Using a firm product with high G prime that sticks together has some seriously magical properties. Injectors need to get training to see how it integrates and how it looks for themselves. During her visit, she had two hands-on training sessions back-to-back. There was a huge focus on education, science, and data.

For the third program of the day, they had a roundtable discussion at a steakhouse. They talked about business, educating patients, and relationship building. A short time later, at another place, Jessica learned about Ranch Water. Haven’t heard of it? It’s a cocktail including topo chico, a blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, and tajin on the rim of the glass.

This cocktail was truly invented by ranchers who wanted a spirited drink to enjoy after they ended their hard work days. Eventually it caught on, and you can find it at plenty of establishments, each offering their own personal twist.

The whole visiting experience was incredibly warm and welcoming. Even though she was far away from home, she felt comfortable and can’t wait to go back. It also reinforced her appreciation for education in the industry. Making important information easier to access is what it’s all about, and a big reason why this podcast exists.
