    The Corie Weathers Podcast

Corie Weathers is a licensed counselor who has spent two decades sitting with people in the middle of hard things. Marriages under strain. Families carrying more than anyone outside the house can see.

This podcast is that same conversation, opened up. Corie talks with guests, and sometimes straight to you, about marriage and connection, parenting through change, faith, mental health, and the culture we are all trying to live in right now. You get clinical insight without the clinical distance, and you leave with something you can use this week.

Corie is the author of Military Culture Shift and Sacred Spaces, and a licensed professional counselor and board certified coach. She was one of the Mighty25 Influencers of 2024 and the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year for her work with service members, families, and military academia. Each season takes its own shape. This one is simple and conversational, closer to how these talks actually happen at a kitchen table.

What Heals the Deepest Hurts with Dr. Mike Sytsma Jun 01, 2026
    Show notes

What does healing actually require — in a marriage, in a community, or in a culture stretched thin by conflict?

We’re living in a time when tension feels everywhere — in our homes, online, within institutions, and across the nation. The emotional strain we feel collectively often mirrors what happens inside relationships: disconnection, mistrust, stuck narratives, and the fear that things may never return to peace.

That’s why today’s conversation with Dr. Mike Sytsma is so compelling.

For more than 30 years, Mike has worked with couples facing some of the most painful relational fractures imaginable — and he’s learned something stunningly consistent: two things must be present for healing to even begin:

    1. A contrite, humble heart

—a genuine willingness to acknowledge harm and soften defensiveness.

    2. Grace

—creating space for change without erasing boundaries, truth, or accountability.

These two human capacities, he says, are just as essential for restoring marriages as they are for healing communities and cultures under strain.

In this episode, Mike and Corie explore:

    • Why deep conflict (personal or societal) emerges when pain goes unaddressed

    • What makes a contrite heart so transformative — and so rare

    • How grace functions as an active force in reconciliation, not passive acceptance

    • The difference between forgiveness, safety, and rebuilding trust

    • Why some relationships — and some communities — recover while others fracture

    • How humility, grit, and emotional regulation allow peace to take root again

    • What healing looks like when it’s slow, nonlinear, and imperfect

    • The inner work required of both individuals before reconciliation can occur

Corie reflects on how these insights reach far beyond intimate relationships: To heal a divided culture, individuals must first examine the inner conflicts that shape how they show up in the world. The principles that restore a marriage — truth, humility, accountability, and compassion — are the same principles that restore communities.

Healing After Nuclear War Jun 01, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode of Restored, Corie Weathers speaks with author and filmmaker Victoria Kelly, and producer/director Beatrice "B" Becette, the creators of the documentary Atomic Echoes: Untold Stories of World War II.

Their journey began when Karin Tanabe and Victoria discovered that their families were connected by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki — one as an American medic sent into the ruins, the other as a Japanese educator helping rebuild after the war. Together with producer Beatrice Becette, they set out to uncover the forgotten voices of the Japanese atomic bomb survivors and the American atomic veterans who lived in the aftermath.

This conversation reminds us that peace isn’t just the absence of war — it’s the hard, human work of facing history, honoring grief, and choosing hope.

    💡 In This Episode:

    • The surprising connection that brought Karin and Victoria together
    • What it means to reconcile personal and national histories
    • The unseen legacy of America’s atomic veterans
    • How Beatrice helped translate pain into purpose through filmmaking
    • Why remembering is an act of peace

E7 The Stories We Believe, Graves and Gardens Apr 17, 2025
    Show notes

Listen in for an honest update on my counseling practice, a shift in how I'm showing up for clients, and a powerful message about the stories we tell ourselves.

We will explore how internal narratives—those we silently repeat—can either dig graves in our lives or cultivate gardens. Drawing from real-life examples and relationship dynamics, we will discuss how to recognize when assumptions and inner dialogues shape mental health, marriage, and parenting, for better or worse.

    You'll hear:

    • How negative self-talk and assumptions sabotage relationships

    • The metaphor of “stories as shovels” and how to choose narratives that bring life

    • How to spot when you’re guarding your heart versus leaning into truth and connection

    • How faith and radical acceptance offer a grounded path forward in hard seasons

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or just stuck in old thought patterns—this episode will meet you where you are and invite you to plant something new.

🌱 This week’s challenge: Notice the stories you're telling yourself—are you digging a garden or a grave?

Addressing Your Concerns Around Yoga & Meditation- with Amber Mattingly, DMin Sep 22, 2023
    Show notes

After hearing concerns on social media of Matt and I practicing yoga and prayerful meditation, I knew it was time to invite my dear friend Amber Mattingly, DMin to the podcast to share her story. This is a faith-based episode that addresses the biggest fears and questions around these practices.

Amber began yoga when her son was newly diagnosed with autism. She was overwhelmed, frightened for his future, worried about her marriage, and frustrated at life. At the height of this experience, she stopped sleeping for a whole year. She was not the youthful mom coming to yoga to learn handstands and complicated poses. Instead, she was the young mom barely able to make it through the day who ended up spending most of the time crying on her mat.

For her, yoga is a tool that reconnected her with her true self, strengthened connection with something greater than myself, and built relationships based on humility, compassion & radical amazement!

Amber met Pema while pursuing her Doctor of Ministry degree in Compassion based Leadership and they wondered what might happen if people from different faith traditions shared a prayer/meditation practice. Would they grow spiritually together while deepening their connection to their own faith tradition? This curiosity lead them to develop a study that included Buddhist and Christian practitioners. What we found were some hidden treasures!

For many of our service members, this is a real issues that deeply impacts their ability to recover.
