    Show notes

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.” - Seneca

I can't emphasise enough how getting into nature has played in my role as a father and developing a love for the outdoors in my children and the resilience it has built in both them and myself.

The outdoors provide the perfect backdrop for us to develop a more stoic philosophy and approach to life.

In this episode we look at 5 Stoic rules for mastering ourselves as men by engaging with nature and the unpredictability of the elements.

EP. 27 - Masculinity. Raising Boys. Building Men Nov 26, 2019
    Show notes

For this episode I am honored to have Mike Yarborough on the podcast. Mike is the founder of Wolf and Iron and the host of the Podcast of the same name. He is also the owner of a very interesting and unique business called Rustic and Maine where he makes rings out of old redeemed wood and other materials from ships, whiskey barrels and rifle stocks to name a few.

We have an interesting conversation spanning many topics, from following our calling to practising patience as we find meaning and follow our passions. We also talked about the confusion and chaos in society and our differing views on gender identification. We end off by looking at how Mike approached raising two boys as he became a father at a very young age, and how looking back can cause us certain regrets if we don’t step up in an effective way as a man and father.

Dad Stoic EP.5 - Relationships: 10 Stoic Steps for Marriage Nov 15, 2019
    Show notes

“Where, then, this love for each other is perfect and the two share it completely, each striving to outdo the other in devotion, the marriage is ideal and worthy of envy, for such a union is beautiful.” - Musonius Rufus

To be an effective father the most important relationship to nurture is the one with our wives. With the world making everything so readily available for us and people being driven by their impulses and the pull for us to join them getting stronger as social media explodes, we need to be ready for the challenges that come by being men of character and virtue.

In this episode I discuss 10 ways that stoic principles and techniques can help us do that and drive us towards taking control of the things in our control to positively influence the things that are either partially or not in our control.

EP.25 - Be who you were born to be with AYDIAN DOWLING Nov 12, 2019

Aydian is a husband and father and he loves his family fiercely. He works hard and he works out hard, at times sizing himself up against the other guys lifting at the gym. He loves life and lives it to the fullest. He takes extreme ownership in the situations he finds himself in. He believes in himself and the call he has answered. He is like any one of the outstanding men we follow and emulate. Except for one difference. One. He is a transgender man.

Aydian is celebrating 10 years since he started hormone therapy and the incredible journey it set him on. Today he shares his story, wisdom and passion with me.

I lived blinded by prejudice and lacked empathy and perspective for so long, but I am glad I had my eyes opened so that I could share this conversation with him , and now with you.

For me, no band has been more present in my playlist over the last 10 years than DIE HEUWELS FANTASTIES. In this episode, I am honoured and excited to be joined by lead singer Pierre Greeff in a conversation that spans many subjects, mostly connected to our shared love for our country and the ways we can step up as dads in taking responsibility for our family’s health, wealth and safety!
