406 - Amy Miller Jun 17, 2022

Show notes

Amy Miller is an explosive club act, wielding real depth and texture as well as her “resting dustbowl face”, to polarise audiences who either love her, or hate her and can’t figure out why.

We get into the relative merits of US and UK gag rate; employing and avoiding comedy tropes about appearance; bullying tall men; how the circuit is changing; and why she’s still being advised by female comics not to talk about her age…

Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for ad-free episodes, extra content from every show that has it, and much more - including the exclusive Insiders Q&As with Nish Kumar, Alfie Brown, James Acaster and Fern Brady, plus the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.

405 - Olaf Falafel Jun 11, 2022

Show notes

The comic creation of comedian and illustrator Derek Chickpeas, “Olaf Falafel” is an absolute combine-harvester of inspirationally daft ideas; hoovering them up and blasting them out across multiple creative outputs.

We talk about “Olaf Falafel’s Art Club”, “Old MacDonald Heard A Parp”, “One Giant Leek” and plenty of other projects including “The Pearl With The Girl Earring” and a load of other stuff he unsurprisingly doesn’t have time to properly leverage…. We also discuss his penchant for over-delivering; his uniquely brilliant Edinburgh Fringe flyer designs; how to prioritise a million projects; as well as how he manages to stay one of the happiest creatives who’ve ever graced this podcast.

Over half an hour of extras available exclusively to members of the Insiders Club include an exploration of his copycat-inspiring success on Vine (and the relief he felt at its collapse); further investigation of his effervescent comedy mind; and why he probably won’t illustrate your kids’ book idea…

404 - Helen Bauer Jun 02, 2022

Show notes

CW: Self-harm

"Basic plus" (because she’s self-aware), brilliant Helen Bauer is probably the most self-actualised comedian and human we’ve had on the show. Her punchy gags and insightful premises are all imbued with an absolute tsunami of personality, flirting with us one minute and roaring the next. And she even seems to have accepted her longterm depression…

We talk about her Apollo-conquering debut; how she acutely weaponises elements from her real life that might seem like hindrances; and basing your personality around a scrunchie.

15 deeply painful minutes of extra content available exclusively to members of the Insiders Club includes a conversation about “cringe”. (I mean honestly, even if you’re an Insider, just skip this bit - there’s nothing for you here), and some lovely stuff about her podcasting co-hosts Rosie Jones and Catherine Bohart.

403 - Bobby Mair May 27, 2022

Show notes

With his dishevelled appearance and wild energy, you might not be surprised to learn that the wonderfully funny Bobby Mair has had “more therapists than girlfriends”. We talk about his Canadian comedy work ethic, the trick of making the audience your friend, and find out why bad gigs in the UK are still good.

We delve into his origins, starting comedy coincidentally during a traumatic and grief-stricken phase in his life; find out what a relief it was after 16 years to write an observational joke that didn’t derive from trauma; and discover why comedy didn’t save Bobby’s life.

20 mins of extra content available exclusively to members of the Insiders Club includes Bobby on the “Killer Camp” reality show he hosted; some exploration of his mental robustness; and how he went viral as the worst comic in the world…

402 - Daniel Rigby May 20, 2022

Show notes

BAFTA-winning, Cumberbatch-beating actor, comic, and now the writer-performer of his screamingly funny new audiobook “Isaac Steele and the Forever Man”, Daniel Rigby is an extraordinary talent. The star of “Eric & Ernie” (BBC), Black Mirror’s “Waldo” episode, and Donald in Will Sharpe’s amazing “Flowers” (CH4), Daniel is dipping his toe back into standup after years away.

In an episode Stu describes as “absolute ComCom-Bait”, Daniel discusses having no self-esteem despite being good at everything (Stu’s words not his), and how casting directors can smell that he’s an “angry weirdo”. We dig into creativity, dread, anxiety, and why there’s more of him than he intended in his book’s ultra-nihilist protagonist…

25mins of extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Daniel on the immense responsibility he felt when asked as a young comic to portray the legendary Eric Morecambe on screen; manufacturing a middle class “bumble” to disguise his working class background; and trying to focus on the journey of standup rather than the destination.

Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for this and much more, including the exclusive Insiders Q&As with Nish Kumar, James Acaster and Fern Brady and the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.

401 - Dulcé Sloan (Live at SXSW) May 13, 2022

Show notes

A comedy queen who will not be disrespected, actor and comedian Dulcé Sloan (The Daily Show) joins us at SXSW in Austin Texas, for a blazing and very funny live interview. We cover her natural authority and its relationship to what “every Black person and woman has to learn”; caring about the crowd and why no successful comic ignores the audience; and how one never truly loses one’s vulnerability to abuse.

25mins of extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Dulcé on collaboration with the Daily Show writers, and a fascinating walkthrough of her technique for exploring a subject by trying to make the senseless make sense…

Show notes

On the tenth anniversary of the first release, our first ever ComCom guest Rob Deering returns to discuss marathons not sprints. One of Stu’s all-time favourite acts, we’ll celebrate Rob’s huge “Running Commentary” podcast with Paul Tonkinson, and its associated fandom; whether Rob is secretly serious; walking away from the desire to be liked; and the secret of Roger Rabbit’s handcuffs…

25 mins of extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club includes Rob on meritocracy and the strange evolution of comedy from the 70s to now, as well as some informed speculation on its future!

Show notes

In this unmissable live special from South By South West, the Bitter Buddha returns to lay waste to us all with analysis of his insanely good new special, “For The Masses”. We explore how he structured and taped the special; why his sets are all cries for help; his vulnerabilities and internal responses to things; and how to destroy him if you were a heckler…

We also peek into his obsession with impending doom, weigh up how much truth there is in the backstory of his archetypal persona, and learn how to flee the scene of an actual murder.

Visionary comedian, and actor in “Honey Boy” (Prime) and “Concrete Cowboys” (Netflix), Byron Bowers once moved to LA and slept in his car while he tried to make stand-up work. In this live special from South By South West, he joins us to talk about processing trauma; finding true freedom onstage and emotional freedom among his family; how he apprehends his comic and acting technique; and being so poor people think you’re wealthy…

397 - Matt Richardson Mar 11, 2022

Show notes

“Caffeinated puppy” Matt Richardson joins us to reflect on the parallel tracks of his comedy and “TV personality” careers, and the indefatigable enthusiasm that underpins both. We explore his youthful stand-up bad habits, the trap of “comedy reportage” and also expose the dynamic between his OCD and his fear of doing badly onstage - and how that might have hampered his creativity. But just how good is he with mums?

25 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Matt on how his relationship with Virgin Radio came to a rocky end; the “Joel Dommett” factor and what it means for comics; and how to play the game of reality TV and win!
