A Christmas Carol was the first Christmas story I tackled when I started the podcast back in 2007. I think most every actor would love to be involved in a production of A Christmas Carol, and I was no different.

11 years later, in 2018, when I saw how much I had grown as a narrator, and also how much my studio had improved, I decided to record this one again. This recording is the 2018 version, available in the anthology, The Christmas Stories of Charles Dickens. A link is available in the show notes.

How can Jimmy convince Molly's pugnacious father that he is not, in fact, a professional burglar? P.G. Wodehouse, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

Thank you so much to all our new and returning supporters who chipped in this week. We'd like to get the vintage episodes back as quickly as possible. Here's how you can help us out:

Well-to-do Jimmy broke into a house on a bet. He got help from Spike Mullins, a penny larcenist who happened to be burgling Jimmy. Together, they broke into the house of the grafting police captain, Mr. McEchern, who coincidentally was the father of the girl Jimmy had been smitten with on his recent steam ship travels.

A year later, Jimmy is in London, and is invited to stay at the country estate of Lord Dreever, a penniless noble with a moneyed and intimidating aunt and uncle. Due to an oversight, Jimmy must walk from the train station to the estate, and who should he meet on his way but Molly McEchern, the very girl who had so impressed him on the steamship, and whose father's house he had bunglingly burgled.

Show notes

A year of globe-trotting can't cure Jimmy's curious affliction. Will he ever get the remarkable girl from the steamer out of his head? P.G. Wodehouse, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

We've had a few folks become supporters! Thank you so much to all our new and returning supporters who chipped in this week. However, we still have a long way to go.

Last week, we met Jimmy, who had just returned to America from England, and was smitten with a girl he met, kind of. Their eyes met, but they never spoke. On returning to New York, Jimmy's flat was broken into by Spike Mullins, who Jimmy took a liking to. Spike and Jimmy then broke into the home of Mr. McEchern, the grafting chief of police, and the father to the enigmatic girl Jimmy saw on the steamer.

Ep. 879, The Intrusion of Jimmy, Part 1 of 7, by P.G. Wodehouse Nov 03, 2023

Show notes

Everyone says that Jimmy is the same jolly chap as ever, even after coming into money. So why does he agree to break into a house? P.G. Wodehouse, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

Well, I hate to say it, I mean I really hate to say it, but we'll be suspending the vintage episodes for a bit. Right now, it's too cost prohibitive. But here's what I'd like to do about it:

If we get enough new supporters, we can start it up again. So please go to http://classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a supporter for $5 a month. We'll send you a coupon code every month for $8 off any audiobook order, and hopefully we'll be back with more vintage episodes before you know it.

Today's story is a standalone Wodehouse title. It's not part of a series, and like a lot of his books, contains both American and British characters. I hope you like it.

I particularly enjoy his reference to Arsène Lupin. Keep an ear open for it!

Ep. 878, The Eyes, by Edith Wharton VINTAGE Nov 01, 2023

Edith Wharton loved ghost stories, and The Eyes is one of her finest. The concept of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" is on full display, here. Let's get to it:

Ep. 877, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving VINTAGE Oct 30, 2023

Show notes

Sleepy Hollow sounded like such a peaceful place to the gentle Ichabod Crane. Boy, was he in for a surprise. Washington Irving, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to this Vintage Episode of The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

The character of Ichabod Crane in Irving's immortal story has had many incarnations. He's been a detective, a dabbler in the supernatural, and a criminologist, among other things. First published in 1820, this is among the first examples of American fiction with enduring popularity. Of course, cartoons help.

I've always appreciated how much of the original text survived in the Disney version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Required viewing at Halloween time.

Ep. 876, The Haunters and the Haunted, by Edward Bulwer-Lytton Oct 27, 2023

Show notes

Why is an unobtrusive, simple flat in the middle of London outrageously haunted? Edward Bulwer-Lytton, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

It's the most wonderful time of the year – Halloween! Keep an eye open for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving, and The Eyes, by Edith Wharton. As you've noticed, there's a lot of new material we're sending your way, and we really want to keep the momentum going. Please go to http://classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a supporter for $5 a month. We'll send you a coupon code every month, so you can get even more! And thanks for your support!

The Right Honourable Lord Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a prolific novelist, and very popular in his day. He coined many phrases now commonplace, such as, "the pen is mightier than the sword", "The pursuit of the almighty dollar", and "It was a dark and stormy night". He represented the Whigs in Parliament, and was the Secretary of State for the Colonies from June 1858 to June 1859.

He married Rosina Doyle Wheeler, also a writer, and they had two children. He wasn't a faithful husband, and they parted acrimoniously in 1833. When he was standing as a parliamentary candidate in June 1858, Rosina continued to publicly denounce him, in print and in person, and his responses escalated until he eventually had her committed to a mental asylum. She was shortly released after a public outcry.

He suffered with gradual hearing loss from the time he was a young man. As it worsened during the course of his life, he pulled out of the public eye. An unsuccessful ear operation eventually killed him, and he died in 1873.
