Ep. 356: Advice on Navigating and Surviving the Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual Harm Caused by Living in a White Racist Society Mar 24, 2022
    Show notes

Resmaa Menakem is an artist and psychotherapist. He is the author of several books including The New York Times bestseller My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies. His new book is The Quaking of America: An Embodied Guide to Navigating Our Nations Upheaval & Racial Reckoning.

He explains how white supremacy and life in a racist society such as the United States has a profound impact on black and brown people's mental, emotional, physical and psychological health and overall wellbeing.

Resmaa also warns that American neofascism and Trumpism are existential threats not just to black and brown people – but to white people as well….even if most of the latter are in profound denial of that fact.

He also explains what being a true "white ally" during a time of ascendant white supremacy and neofascism really means and how too many white folks – especially "good liberals" – are not prepared for what that obligation actually entails.

Chauncey DeVega shares his recent life and death medical journey with Resmaa and what he learned about his brain and mind during a recent visit to the neurologist.

Chauncey also warns that many good and well-intentioned Americans are being manipulated by Russian propaganda about the war in Ukraine.

And Chauncey DeVega shares his detailed review of the movie The Batman.

Ep. 355: What is it Like When the Republican-Fascist "Critical Race Theory" Witch Hunt Comes After You? Mar 07, 2022
    Show notes

Ted Thornhill is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Florida Gulf Coast University where he is also the founder and director of the Center for Critical Race and Ethnic Studies

He shares what it is like to be under siege by (and resisting) the Republican-fascist Orwellian assaults on higher education as seen with the "critical race theory" white supremacist moral panic and other attacks on the truth and human decency.

Ted Thornhill also reflects on the personal, professional, and other costs of being a truth-teller – and how and why he endures -- in a moment of white backlash and white rage in the Age of Trump and beyond.

And Ted Thornhill offers some wisdom and hard-earned advice to young black and brown scholars and others who are pondering a career in American higher education as teachers or administrators in a moment of such great crisis with its ascendant fascism and resurgent white supremacy.

Chauncey DeVega reflects on how too many people are being seduced by ghoulish impulses in their reactions to Russia's war on Ukraine. And Chauncey DeVega is disgusted by all of the supposed "pundits" and assorted armchair experts who are circulating their subpar analyses about the events in Ukraine, and by doing so are doing the American people and the world a great disservice.

And Chauncey sets the record straight about "Hank the Tank" a very handsome and unfairly maligned and slandered bear person who has been accused of breaking into human people's homes and eating their food.

Ep. 354: Life Lessons From General Smedley Butler, the (first) Jan. 6 Coup Plot, and How War is a Racket Feb 15, 2022
    Show notes

Jonathan Katz is the author of the new book Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire. His essays and other writing have appeared in such leading publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, the New Republic, The Guardian, Mother Jones and Foreign Policy.

He is also a recipient of the James Foley/Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism.

Jonathan explains the parallels between Donald Trump and his cabal's coup attempt on Jan. 6, 2021 and the "Business Plot" against President Roosevelt in the 1930s. He also warns that the alliance and attraction between the moneyed classes and fascism and other forms of authoritarianism are nothing new in American life.

He also shares how legendary Marine Corps General Smedley Butler went from being a gangster for capitalism and an enforcer of American empire to a person of conscience – and the lessons we can all learn from that transformation in this dark time of democracy crisis and ascendant fascism and other forms of inhumanity.

Jonathan and Chauncey also reflect on what they learned from their health crises about life, vocation, and managing trauma and fear.

Chauncey DeVega cuts a much-deserved promo on the hope peddlers, happy pill sellers, and other members of the commentariot and political class who continue to live in an alternate universe of narcissistic denial, delusion, and happy endings that minimizes the existential danger represented by Donald Trump and the Republican-fascists and their movement.

And Chauncey shares an update on his health journey, trials and tribulations, realizations, luck, and what it means to get your bounce back.

Ep. 353: The Truth Report -- Donald Trump and the Republican Neofascists Have Pushed America to the Brink of a Second Civil War Feb 06, 2022
    Show notes

This is a preview of this week's installment of The Truth Report.

    https://thetruthreportwithchaunceydevega.libsyn.com/ep-109-donald-trump-and-the-republican-neofascists-have-pushed-america-to-the-brink-of-a-second-civil-war

Barbara Walter is a professor of international relations and political science at UC San Diego and one of the world's leading experts on civil wars, political violence, and terrorism.

She is also a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a frequent live guest on CNN, and an active consultant for the World Bank, the United Nations, and the Departments of Defense and State.

Her new book is How Civil Wars Start.

Barbara Walter explains how Donald Trump, the Republican fascists, and other right-wing ethnic violence entrepreneurs have pushed the United States to the brink of a second civil war.

She warns that after Trump's coup attempt and lethal attack on the Capitol by his followers that the United States ceased to be a democracy and is now what experts describe as an anocracy – a failing if not failed democracy exists somewhere between autocracy and authoritarianism.

And Barbara Walter details what a second American civil war would look like and why it would be a very long and bloody struggle.

Ep. 352: Racism Will Bring America's Ultimate Destruction Jan 20, 2022
    Show notes

Leonce Gaiter's nonfiction writing has appeared in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Times, LA Weekly, Newsweek, and The Washington Post.

His essay "The True Story of The Harder They Fall's Villain Is Even Weirder Than in the Movie" was recently featured at Slate. He is the author of several novels including his most recent, "In the Company of Educated Men".

Gaiter is also the author of the historical novel, "I Dreamt I Was in Heaven - The Rampage of the Rufus Buck Gang".

He explains how an allegiance to Whiteness and the many big and little lies of white supremacy and racism will bring the ultimate destruction of the United States. Gaiter also warns that American fascism and the Jim Crow Republican and Trump's attempt to overthrow America's multiracial democracy on Jan. 6 (and beyond) highlights a profound cultural and political sickness across the color line here in America.

He also reflects on how White America is fundamentally in denial and possessed by a willful naivete and gross childish thinking about its capacity for and attraction to violence, death, and destruction.

Chauncey shares his New Year's 2022 thoughts about life, vulnerability, responsibility, vocation, money, choices, what it means to be "normal", and "the big picture" after his recent brush with death.

He also highlights how the hope peddlers and happy-pill sellers and too many others in the mainstream American corporate news media are continuing to normalize (and literally white wash) American neofascism and Trumpism even as they reflect on the one-year "anniversary" of Jan. 6.

And Chauncey DeVega also shares some wisdom about optimism and hope and struggle as learned from the Black Freedom Struggle hope warrior titans Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Ep. 350: The Life Wisdom of Artist Winfred Rembert and His Memoir of the Jim Crow South Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

Winfred Rembert was one of America's great contemporary artists. Originally from Cuthbert, Georgia, Rembert painted on carved and tooled leather where he chronicled black life during the Jim Crow terror regime through the lens of his own personal experiences.

Rembert's artwork and life story are a testament to the enduring spirit of black Americans and his attempt to live a good life even in the face of much struggle and tragedy. Winfred Rembert would eventually settle in New Haven, Connecticut, where he would pass away in April 2021.

Rembert was honored by the Equal Justice Initiative in 2015 and awarded a United States Artists Barr Fellowship in 2016. His life and work have also been the focus of two documentary films. Rembert's art has been featured by galleries and museums across the United States.

Winfred Rembert's life and art are the subject of his memoir, co-written with philosopher Erin Kelly, "Chasing Me to My Grave: An Artist's Memoir of The Jim Crow South".

On this week's episode, Erin Kelly reflects on her friendship with Winfred Rembert and the life lessons and wisdom he shared with her while they worked together on his memoir.

Kelly also shares how Rembert was able to maintain such fortitude, joy, and love of life, family, friends, and creativity even in the face of very challenging day-to-day circumstances caused by poverty and the color line.

Through his art and humanity Winfred Rembert had a profoundly positive impact on many people beyond his immediate circle of family and friends. Erin Kelly shares what it was like to be in the presence of such a special human being.

Erin Kelly and Chauncey DeVega also contemplate questions of the good life, justice, and what it means to bear witness in an American society that is rapidly succumbing to neofascism and so many other forms of evil and injustice – and where most people choose to look away and/or collaborate.

The struggle does indeed come at a cost. Chauncey shares what happened to him during a recent health emergency and how he almost ended up playing the slot machines at the big casino in the sky.

Ep. 349: There is No "Nice" or "Kind" Way to Warn the American People About the Rising Fascist Tide and Disaster Dec 08, 2021
    Show notes

Ruth Ben-Ghiat is a professor of history and Italian studies at New York University and an expert on fascism and authoritarianism. Her opinion essays and other writing have been featured by CNN, the Washington Post, The New Yorker and the Atlantic.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat's most recent book is Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat reflects on how authoritarianism and America's escalating democracy crisis are an attack on the American people's individual and collective emotions, intellect, bodies, and overall well-being.

She also explains why so many Americans – as well as elites in the news media and larger political class – are, more than five years later, still in a state of denial about the Trump Republican fascist movement and its existential threat to American society.

Chauncey DeVega continues to warn America's so-called pro-democracy forces that they are letting themselves be overwhelmed by the fascist onslaught and rising tide. How? By not understanding the true nature of the enemy.

And Chauncey reviews several new films, C'mon C'mon, Encanto, Wolf, and Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta.

Ep. 348: Are Terrible People Attracted to Power? Or Does Power Make Them Terrible? Nov 23, 2021
    Show notes

Brian Klaas is a columnist at The Washington Post, a political scientist, and an associate professor in global politics at University College London.

He is the author of several books including The Devil's Accomplice, The Devil's Apprentice, and How to Rig an Election.

His new book is Corruptible: Who Gets Power and How It Changes Us.

Brian Klaas warns that America's political, social, and other institutions are structured to reward and encourage sociopathic and other anti-human and authoritarian behavior.

Klaas also explains that to prevent the rise of another fascist-authoritarian such as Donald Trump (or his successors) will require not just treating the symptoms of a pathocracy but also a deep examination of how America's elite class attracts and rewards such vile human beings.

He also warns that American democracy is rapidly succumbing to the poisons of fascism, authoritarianism and violence.

And Brian Klaas shares what it was like to speak with some of America's and the world's most dangerous leaders and other personalities – and why learning from them is necessary if we are to create healthier political and social institutions.

Chauncey DeVega reflects on our collective exhaustion and what it feels like to be on the "doom treadmill".

Chauncey also offers some advice about how to manage and defeat the Republican fascist assault on American society and feelings of being wholly overwhelmed.

And on this bountiful podcast episode, Chauncey DeVega shares some hate mail and reviews two new movies that he wants to warn the public to avoid -- lest they fall into a deep slumber.

Ep. 347: The Truth Report -- Tim Wise Explains How The Jim Crow Republicans "Critical Race Theory" Bogeyman is Powered by White Rage Nov 09, 2021
    Show notes

This is a preview of this week's installment of The Truth Report which features anti-racism educator, activist, and premier truth-teller Tim Wise.

    *

    *

Tim Wise is one of America's and the world's leading experts on white privilege and racism. He is the author of numerous books including his most recent Dispatches from the Race War.

He explains how white rage and white privilege have been combined in the Jim Crow Republican Party's very successful "critical race theory" bogeyman attacks as seen in Virginia (and soon around the country) against the Democrats, the very idea of public education, and the teaching of America's real history of racial inequality and injustice.

Wise also highlights how these "critical race theory" attacks are a manifestation of a desire by white parents and others invested in the many big and small lies of Whiteness to create their own white "safe space" where the humanity of brown and black people is marginalized and ultimately ignored.

And Tim Wise explains exactly how the Democrats and others can successfully fight back against the Jim Crow Republicans' white supremacist "critical race theory" bogeyman attacks.
