CM 2 Episode 2 Fairy Stories as a Help or Hindrance in Education Julie H. Ross Jun 10, 2020

Show notes

"A primrose by a river's brim A yellow primrose was to him— And it was nothing more."

I think if Peter Bell had been a "P.N.E.U. child" the primrose would have been something more to him—because fairy stories would have formed part of his education.

Fairy tales are of the greatest importance in the early education of both the imaginative and unimaginative child. In the case of the first, they supply food for the child's eager fancy, in the case of the second they bring to life a very necessary quality.

CM 2 Episode #1 On Fourteen Years of Home Education Jun 03, 2020

Show notes

This Spring marks 14 years since I felt the soul-stirring to bring my oldest home from a transitional kindergarten into learning at home. CM 34: LOST IN HOMESCHOOLING? APPLY THE PHILOSOPHY OF WONDER - Jennifer Macintosh May 29, 2020

Show notes

Life as a homeschooler isn't what I imagined it would be all those years ago.

I suppose it takes a few years and enough failures to be humble enough to see the simplest lessons. If I were younger and reading my own words today, I'd still be filled with all the hope and joy of youth, and also the sometimes blinding idealism that sweeps reality far, far away, and embraces "what might be," or "what I'm reading about that could be," or, "how someone said it would be." There is something about that idealism – it's sweet in the moment, but add enough years and experiences and it runs away like a coward when reality rushes in – and you're left with your intellect, willpower, and God's grace.

CM 31: Charlotte Mason 101 Teaching Reading the CM way May 20, 2020

Show notes

Charlotte Mason wrote that the traditional methods of teaching reading in her day were "one of the many ways in which children are needlessly and cruelly oppressed," and were "an abuse of his intelligence." What were the methods she so vehemently spoke out against? Unfortunately, many of them are still used to teach reading today. In her volumes, Miss Mason outlined steps in a reading lesson that would arouse the imagination and awaken the "joyous interest which is the real secret of success." In this super practical podcast, Julie H Ross (who has taught dozens of children how to read), will guide you through Miss Mason's approach to reading lessons.
