    Show notes

Robotron: 2084 - by Williams' 'Vid Kidz' - may not have been the first twin-stick shoot'em up, but it was perhaps the one that most clearly defined the genre template which would be followed for three and a half decades (and counting). Leon, Michiel and returning guest Dan Clark attempt to understand what makes this most challenging of games so enduringly compelling, and also enjoy a collection of your Three Word Reviews from Twitter (follow us @caneandrinse) Cane and Rinse 273 was edited by Ryan Hamann Do you have an opinion about a game we're covering that you'd like read out on the podcast? Tales of Vesperia – Cane and Rinse No.272 Jun 12, 2017
    Show notes

For more than twenty years, the sprawling, lush titles of the Tales series have captivated JRPG fans the world over. Like its more “Fantastic” brethren, the series doesn’t require that the games be played together or in order, so even as the tenth title of sixteen (or so), Tales of Vesperia serves as a perfect jumping-off point as the first on the seventh generation of consoles and the only entry on a Microsoft platform. Leah, Karl, and Michiel immerse themselves in the world of Terca Lumireis and explore the intriguing characters relationships and intricate battle systems that they find there. Music used in this issue: 1: The Dawn of Departure by Motoi Sakuraba and Hibiki Aoyama. 2: Crossing the Small Hills by Motoi Sakuraba and Hibiki Aoyama. Double Dragon – Cane and Rinse No.271 Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

After the success of Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun and Renegade, Yoshihisa Kishimoto of Technos Japan set about outdoing himself with Double Dragon. The resulting two-player brawler would go on to spawn multiple sequels and spin-offs, as well as influencing every game in the genre that came after it. Leon, James, Karl and Michiel start at the beginning and work their way through as far as Technos' demise and Double Dragon Advance. Contributions from the forum flesh things out as we try to pay lip service to the myriad successful and unsuccessful ports. A second Double Dragon podcast - issue 285 - will focus on Double Dragon Neon (2012), Double Dragon II: The Wander of The Dragons (2013) and Double Dragon IV (2017). Music used in this issue: Track 1: Opening Theme by Kazunaka Yamane Track 2: Slums by Kazunaka Yamane Cane and Rinse 271 was edited by Ryan Hamann Do you have an opinion about a game we're covering that you'd like read out on the podcast? Tetris – Cane and Rinse No.270 May 29, 2017
    Show notes

Tetris: Such a simple, elegant game with such a complex and convoluted back story. Leon, Josh, Karl and Leah recall the heights of their Tetris addictions and the versions (among countless versions) that worked for them and those incarnations which failed to capture the spark of Alexey Pazhitnov's original. As usual, the panel is embellished by the memories of the Cane and Rinse community, and also discuss high level play of both the NES version at The Classic Tetris World Championships, as favoured by purists - and also Arika's super-hardcore The Grand Master series with its speed 999 and its invisible tetrominoes.
