Floyd Mayweather, Jr. defeated Andre Berto in what was billed as the final fight of his career. It was yet another lopsided encounter for the pound-for-pound champion as he said farewell to boxing in a bizarre mismatch.
THE UNDERCARD
It became clear once this fight was announced that Mayweather vs. Berto would need a strong undercard to attract fans. In a rematch of their early 2015 classic, Roman Martinez and Orlando Salido met in the ring in hopes of recreating their Fight of the Year candidate which saw the Puerto Rican they call "Rocky" raise the title.
In other undercard action, WBC mandatory challenger George Groves squared off against super-middleweight titles Badou Jack in a super-middleweight clash. After a first round knockdown, George Groves recovered to win the first half of this highly skillful contest, but Badou Jack's patience and commitment to the body attack would wear down the talented Englishman. The boisterous Englishman would fall short yet again at an attempt to raise a world title.
Premier Boxing Champions sunk to a new low this past weekend as the fledgling upstart featured two dangerous mismatches. The controversial and highly adversarial operation continues to ignore boxing fans and attack the media around every corner, yet the Al Haymon led organization paraded and promoted one of the ugliest mismatches in recent boxing history. Peter Quillin and Adonis Stevenson disgraced the sports of boxing this passed weekend, and the Tale of the Tape calls them out on their ridiculous actions.
Oscar Valdez returned to action on TruTV's Friday Night Knockouts in a huge step-up bout for the young, highly touted prospect. The young featherweight showed great improvement with elite hand speed and accuracy against the tough veteran Chris Avalos.

Michael Montero of Montero on Boxing joins the Tale of the Tape boxing podcast to discuss the final fight of Floyd Mayweather's career as he squares off Andre Berto.
It would not be a Floyd Mayweather fight without some controversy surrounding it. The guys discuss the latest article from Thomas Hauser (Can Boxing Trust USADA?) that brings Mayweather's relationship with the United States Anti-Doping Ageny under the microscope.
Kenny and Michael discuss the PBC and the many layers of perception that surround the fledgling boxing start-up. Montero on Boxing delivers his view of Al Haymon's boxing project and the guys discuss its' impact on the rest of the boxing universe.
Mayweather vs. Berto is of coarse the biggest fight of the weekend, but the undercard has some great action featuring two championship fights. The guys preview Badou Jack vs. George Groves and Martinez vs. Salido 2.
In other action this Friday evening, top prospect Oscar Valdez steps up against the hard-hitting Chris Avalos on TruTV and Adonis Stevenson and prospect Errol Spence return in separate Premier Boxing Champions bouts.

Jamie McDonnell defended his WBA bantamweight title for the second time against the flashy and athletic Tomoki Kameda. McDonnell moved Kameda around the ring while pressing forward on the smaller challenger the entire fight behind a solid lead jab. Kameda was flashy in spurts but fought off of his back foot as he pedaled away struggling for accuracy. McDonnell dropped Kameda in the final frame to seal the deal, defeating Kameda by way of unanimous decision.
Anthony Dirrell beat an outmatched and out of shape Marco Antonio Rubio over ten rounds in the boring main event of this Sunday afternoon fight card on the PBC.
The Premier Boxing Champions announcing crew was disgraceful during this fight card from Corpus Cristi. Biased, agenda driven announcing has been a major issue with every PBC card to date, but the ridiculous, farfetched, attempted manipulation of the at-home boxing audience was disrespectful at best. Host Kenny Keith gives a passionate assessment about the state of boxing announcing. The PBC has taken a respected craft of keen observation and reporting and turned into an agenda driven public relations machine.
The Take of the Tape has results from Golden Boy Promotions LA Fight Club show at the Belasco Theater, and briefly discusses the PBC's ten millionth television outlet for their profit loss-leader mechanism as they introduce the PBC on Fox Sports 1.

Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares post-fight – Leo Santa Cruz dispatched of Abner Mares by way of ultra-competive, high octane, majority decision victory. Mares shot out of a canon in hopes of overwhelmeing the taller, rangier Santa Cruz, but the task proved too much for the former three-division champ. Santa Cruz proved most of his critics wrong by showing his ability to rise to the occasion against a top level fighter. What's next for both fighters is yet to be seen, but a rematch makes perfect sense. It was a successful evening of fights for the fledgling Premier Boxing Champions brand filled with exciting action inside the ring.
SHANE MOSLEY vs. RICARDO MAYORGA 2 – Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga 2 was a bizarre promotion indeed. But, the fight itself proved to be pretty entertaining considering the shape that Mayorga was in. The show wasn't without it's own antics as Ricardo Mayorga displayed some bravado by dropping his hands to his side, sticking out his chin and daring "Sugar" Shane to hit him with his best shot. It was a silly attempt to play to the crowd of 3,500 fans at the historic Forum in Inglewood, California, but an entertaining one anyways. Mosley finally ended the evening by knocking out Ricardo Mayorga by way of 6th round body shot.
OLEKSANDR USYK vs. JOHNNY MULLER – Top prospect Oleksandr Usyk returned to action in front of a packed house in Kiev, Ukraine. The cruiserweight wunderkind put on a show for his countryman and won by way of 3rd round stoppage against South African, Johnny Muller. It was a stylistic performance by the slick boxer that ended in a display of pure ferocity and power. The future is bright for the former Olympic gold medalist as he improves to a flawless record of 8-0, with 8 KO's.
