The Book of Joe with Joe Maddon & Tom Verducci

Borrowing the podcast title from their forthcoming book, three-time Manager of the Year Joe Maddon and three-time Sportswriter of the Year Tom Verducci provide exclusive insight, commentary and discussion on the MLB postseason, from the stars to the strategy.

As manager of the 2016 Cubs team that broke a 108-year championship drought, Maddon knows what it takes to navigate October pressure. Part Phil Jackson, part Yogi Berra, Maddon brings unique and entertaining takes on not just on dugout strategy but also life lessons and leadership – not to mention classic cars and rock and roll.

A five-time Emmy winner with Fox and MLB Network, Verducci has behind-the-scenes access to the players and managers throughout the postseason.

“The Book of Joe” is your home to learn – and laugh – about the real stories behind how postseason games are won and lost.

Book of Joe: Astros win the World Series, Dusty Baker Legacy, Phillies Fall, and WS Soundtracks Nov 06, 2022
    Show notes

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Astros closing out a World Series win. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss Houston being one of the best teams all season. Yordan Alvarez was really impressive all season and the pitching came through in all aspects. With the amount of strikeouts the Astros pitching got, it didn't leave many balls in play for a defense that was still spectacular. Joe thinks this win will push teams, especially in the AL West, to try and create a hitting lineup that can move the ball around the field. Dusty Baker finally gets his World Series championship after 25 years of managing. Dusty has had the right demeanor to last so long in the game and had the perfect mentality to calm the situation and bring credibility back to Houston. As for the game itself, Tom was surprised to see the Phillies mood just tank when they were down. We find out the one pivotal moment that changed the outcome. The 118th World Series was entertaining and both teams represented the game well. We wrap up with music heard in Baker's office through the series. Joe thinks the season should end with ZZ Top and 'Sharp Dressed Man' for Baker's upcoming offseason.

Book of Joe: Astros take 3-2 series lead, Verlander gets 1st WS win, Strikeout Advantage, and Late round picks Nov 04, 2022
    Show notes

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with Justin Verlander getting his first World Series win. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss the Astros winning Game 5 and taking a 3-2 series lead. Joe says Verlander was 'dripping' in experience while working through a few tough spots. Getting the win could be the new complete game in baseball because pitchers just aren't taught to go 9 innings anymore. We explore what happened through Game 5 and where the Phillies really missed out on a momentum changing moment. Tom points out the Astros strikeout advantage in the series, but Philly has got to put the ball in play with men on base and they haven't. After highlighting some impact players that weren't stars out of the game, we wrap with Joe's late round draft pick band that still made it big.

    Show notes

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with 5 home runs in Game 3 of the World Series. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss Astros P Lance McCullers not being sharp but being left in the game. Joe didn't like seeing Jose Urquidy for 3 innings, using good pitching in bad games. Was McCullers tipping his pitches? Tom explains what was really going on. We're also seeing pitching schedules being thrown off and Houston has starters that haven't seen game in some time. Joe recalls his favorite 'pitch tipping' stories and reveals how it happens. Looking to Game 4, we get Joe's thoughts on Astros P Cristian Javier. It will be a different matchup against Aaron Nola and expect to see the Phillies bullpen early if there's trouble. Show notes

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Phillies and Astros in the World Series. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss the mentality of both teams and how different they are. Joe likes the Philly 'vibe' right now and Tom thinks they're a club that's playing with very little pressure after making the postseason. Bryce Harper's home run was a historic moment for him and Tom walks us through how it happened. Joe explains why manager needs to 'play' through the game before it even happens to know what he's doing in every situation. Looking back at the Yankees season, it's easy to say what needs to be different but you can't just change a team's identity in one series. Find out what Joe says isn't just 'nearly impossible' but just impossible for a team to do. Now we're ready for the games, Joe recalls managing Kyle Schwarber and reveals the impact the outfielder can have on a team and even a teammate like Bryce Harper. Bruce Bochy is back in the game and Tom wonders what it would take for Joe to return to the dugout. We wrap up with Bruce Springsteen and Tom's favorite selection from The Boss.
