Dealing with Control Issues [TJJS:EP208] Jun 19, 2017
    Show notes

    TheJoyJunkie.com/208

You know that thing where you're trying to act all casual and cool, but secretly you want to micromanage the hell outta an event you're hosting, a project you're working on, your kid, your spouse, your boss, etc.? Guess what, my friend? You're dealing with some control issues. And, listen, the reason I know a thing or two about this shiz is because I've battled this little beast for nearly 40 years. So, I feel you. But, sweet baby Jesus, there is hope. Trust.

The thing about "control" is that sometimes it actually DOES contribute to your happiness. Sometimes it really DOES make things easier, more efficient, and timely and in turn, leaves you feeling powerful and fulfilled. Like, Ninja-Warrior-style. And then there are the other times. The times when trying to control a situation (or person) create massive anxiety, overwhelm, and bitterness.

Have a listen to this episode where I discuss seven steps to figuring out the most powerful role Control can play in your world. It's time to stop trying to control the ex, your mom, or your home. No more angst and frustration. Say hello to surrender and a shit-ton of freedom.

    This pod explores:

    • How to distinguish when controlling a sitch is an awesome idea and when you need to back-the-fuck-off
    • The secret role Fear plays in the need to control + how to operate from courage instead
    • How to let go of the "rules" you've unknowingly created so you can feel waaaay more freedom
    • The best thing you can do instead of trying to control shit out of your control

5 Habits to Make You Waaaaaay Happier [TJJS:EP207] Jun 12, 2017

    GET YOUR FREE CHEATSHEETS!

If you've been diggin' into personal development, you've undoubtedly realized that you don't get many results by simply hoarding "good ideas". You know what I'm talking about... scrollin' through Insta or Facebook, double-tappin' it up on inspiring messages, or reading a powerful book but not DOING anything with the info.

If you ever fall into this trap, honey, you are soooo not alone. It's kinda like reading a book on pilates and expecting to get a rockin' body. Um, no. Gotta hit the mat, babycakes!

Here's the deal... creating change in your life is all about your habits. The shit you do day-in and day-out. It's about monitoring the way you spend your time, energy, and self-talk so you are working towards happiness and fulfillment instead of entertaining a bunch of shit you DON'T want.

Alright, great. So, how do you do this? It all starts with your thoughts and creating a "compound effect" in one of the five areas we chat about today. Have a listen as I sound off on 5, different (easy) habits you can start instituting in your life to create a massive dose of happiness... on the regular.

    This pod explores:

    • The subconscious message you're telling yourself by not speaking up for yourself… and the simple step you can take to knock that shit off
    • How you can say "No" with the utmost grace and kindness, but without over-explaining and making a shit-ton of excuses (and, uh-hem, LIES)
    • The #1, biggest key to unlocking confidence and a love of yourself
    • How to examine your common, go-to behaviors to see if you have been unknowingly shooting yourself in the foot (don't worry... it's an easy fix)
    Additional Resources:
    • The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy
    Comedy Clips:

    • "Baxter Scene" from the 2004 cult classic, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, starring Will Ferrell

New Level, New Devil: How Your Inner Critic Grows as You Grow [TJJS:EP206] Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

    TheJoyJunkie.com/206

Recently, I received an email from a listener who has diligently been working with her tools to combat her inner critic, but she's noticed that as she has grown, shifted, and changed, so too, has her inner critic. Hello, new level, new devil!

Maybe you can relate? Maybe you've been plowin' along on your personal development journey... reading books, listening to pods, using your tools, and then BAM! Your inner critic shows up in a louder, sneakier, or scarier way. First off, no worries... this just means you're on the right track and second, there are tons of things you can do to catch this little bugger at this new stage.

Have a listen to this pod where I share 5 things you can do to up your inner-shit-talker rebuttal game so you can feel waaaay more confident that you are actually still in control, tweak your new, powerful, positive self-talk, and feel like you're still moving in the right direction (and actually kinda #slaying).

    This pod explores:

    • The multiple ways your inner critic may have changed as you have grown (some may actually surprise you!)
    • How to develop new self-talk to work with your inner critic at this stage of the journey
    • How to actually get ahead of your inner critic instead of waiting to refute (plus, it feels waaaay better)
    • How the skill of "curiosity" will knock your inner critic out faster than you can say "new level, new devil"

How to Support a Partner Who is in a Funk [TJJS:EP205] May 29, 2017
    Show notes

    TheJoyJunkie.com/205

If you're like most people, it can be damn-near devastating to watch someone you love dearly go through a rough and difficult time. A listener recently wrote into the show with one such dilemma as her husband has become increasing depressed after being thrown some unfortunate work/career curve-balls.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe you've found yourself in a sitch where your partner is straight bummed-the-fuck out about a friendship, a rocky work relationship, a health issue, or some other challenge that you deeeeesperately want to fix. Like, yesterday.

It can be incredibly counter intuitive to simply allow your partner to wade through these murky waters alone, while you sit idly by feeling massively helpless. In this episode, I discuss 5 key concepts you must keep in mind if you want to get through this rough chapter stronger and closer than ever. I'm not saying it's easy, but there are definitely things you can do to keep your cool, support your love, and take care of the both of you through this trying time.

    This pod explores:

    • The absolute FIRST question you must ask your spouse if you want to be any kind of helpful (hint: it's super easy, yet you probably haven't done it.)
    • Why you do not need to fix the problem and what to say/do instead (and trying to fix it is likely making it worse)
    • How to ask for what you need and get your needs met... even if it's not by you partner (wait, what!? yep.)
    • The ridiculous notion of "not taking it personally" and how to battle the responsibility you feel

How to Say Nice Things to Yourself That You Can Actually Believe [TJJS:EP204] May 22, 2017
    Show notes

    GET YOUR CHEATSHEETS!

Ever see posts floating around Insta or Facebook that tell you to "just think positive" or "be kind to yourself" and you're like, "Ok, sure. I'll get right on that. But, HOW!!?" I totally feel you. If you follow anything remotely inspiring on social, it's likely you've come across these sort of concepts.

In my work with both my clients and students, I find they often need much more structure to understand what disempowering things they are saying to themselves, how to know when they tend to be triggered, and what-the-hell to say instead. For many peeps, simply saying "I love myself!" or "I am enough!" feels like a giant, bullshit lie. Now, don't get me wrong, if you can speak that way to yourself with believability and conviction, knock yourself out!

However, I do find that many people (probably you) prefer to bridge the gap a bit. In this week's episode, I'll walk you through four, easy steps to catch and alter your internal talk... so that you can start speaking to yourself like a bestie and actually believe the empowering statements you're saying to yourself. Plus, I made you a killer cheatsheet to make your job super easy... so basically, no excuses!

    This pod explores:

    • Why much of what you say to yourself is actually bullshit
    • How to "catch" your Inner Shit-Talker and what common language to listen for
    • How to build positive mantras you can actually buy into without feeling like a big 'ol liar
    • How to speak to yourself in a positive voice so you can stop feeling like shit

As you likely know, I often take show topic submissions from our awesome PODiance and we recently received a submission with the subject line, "How to Manifest a Mr. Smith". Of course, the two of us were quite flattered, but I knew I needed to tackle this common inquiry of how-the-hell do you find "the one"?

If you've been coming up empty in the dating arena and are wondering what you're doing wrong, this two-part episode is going to be your jam. Here's the deal: Unless you've had some sort of magical, utopian guide on dating, it's likely that you've learned how to date and be in relationship through trial and error, your parent's [awesome] example, and/or a barrage of confusing commentary about what's "normal" and "realistic" from our hyperbolic media.

So, how does one find "the one"? Kismet? Chant some magic words or build an alter? Online dating? [starts to pull teeth out] I feel you. Because I wanted to equip you with everything in YOUR power to call in your dream-boat, I created this two-part pod series to teach you how to get crystal clear on what you want in a partner, and in this second edition in particular, what you can actually DO about it. If you've been feeling like the cards are stacked against you, get ready to feel super empowered and excited about your future holds. (Not just swipe-right kind of excited.)

    This pod explores:

    • What (and who) you need to stop doing if you are serious about getting down to biz with finding your heart's twin
    • How to know what action to take to put yourself out there... without feeling like you'd rather eat a shit sandwich
    • How your inability to receive compliments and kindnesses from others could be negatively affecting your dating life
    • How to stay positive and encourage yourself throughout the process (even if you'd rather just blame your ex for everything)
