    Show notes

Living in a small space, sometimes it's the little things that really help you make the most of the space you do have.

With a 28' boat of her own, experienced cruiser Nica Waters spotted five great ideas when visiting a friend's boat for a 10-day vacation.

Links to items mentioned in podcast:

    Silpat baking mats

These are half sheet size, which tend to be useful for boat-sized ovens. These mats cannot be cut to size!

    Dry erase board

Think of the space you have, and size accordingly. There are also stick on versions that might be of interest. I've also seen people use chalkboard paint!

    Magnet strips (need 2)

    Organization bins for the fridge

You totally could hit the local dollar store for these, and again check the size of YOUR fridge to see what works. Get sturdy ones, such as these from Sterilite!

    Refillable pumps for sunscreen

I like glass; you may prefer plastic. Of course, if you have a large amount of lotion or shampoo that comes in such a container and just finish it off, reuse what you have!

    Operational Info Mar 21, 2018
    Show notes

Be honest. Can you always remember everything about your boat. Which gas can is for the outboard (mixed with oil) or the generator (straight gas)? How much did the watermaker put out last year? Is it less this year?

The list goes on and on.

Experienced liveaboard cruiser Carolyn Shearlock, explains why notebooks didn't work for them, and what finally did to put information right where they needed it.

Need to go somewhere and the outboard won't start? Or worried about trying to go somewhere and having a problem with the motor and not getting home?

Carolyn Shearlock isn't an outboard mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but close to 50 years of running them have taught her what the common problems are. 14 simple things to check if the outboard won't start - along with how to fix them at least well enough to get home. No mechanical skills needed!

How Do You Decide to Go Cruising? Mar 15, 2018
    Show notes

Life is comfortable. What question can you ask that will make it possible to flip the switch and decide to head off to the unknown?

Nica Waters, who has asked and answered this question twice already, shares the conversation that sparked the last cruise – and the surprising twist that made it possible.

    Don't Blindly Follow Experts Mar 14, 2018
    Show notes

Getting ideas from other cruisers and experts is wonderful, but you have to temper the advice they give with knowing what you like and what you plan to do.

For example, "everyone" told Carolyn Shearlock she needed a double sink when she was buying her first boat. And then there were those oven mitts . . .

Listen to why you might want to think a bit before doing everything she -- or anyone else -- recommends!

Trash Management to Avoid Bugs Mar 12, 2018
    Show notes

Trash can be a real source of bugs on a boat: ants, flies and cockroaches. We don't even want to think about the other critters - like mice - that might see your trash as an all you can eat buffet.

With ten years of living aboard a boat in the tropics and near-tropics, Carolyn Shearlock knows a few things about handling trash to keep the bugs away. Here, you can learn in minutes what it took her years to discover.

Cooking in a Moving Kitchen Mar 10, 2018
    Show notes

Burns and cuts can happen anytime you're cooking. Add in the movement of a boat — even in a calm anchorage, let alone at sea — and the chance of an accident increases.

Some think the risk is greatest for monohull boats with their heeling and roll, but there's risk for multi-hullers, too, with the jerkier motion of waves hitting first one hull and then the other.

Carolyn Shearlock, author of The Boat Galley Cookbook, offers nine specific tips that can help you avoid injuries. With time, they'll become habits!
