    Episode 218: POSTCARDS Aug 13, 2018
    Show notes

A postcard captures a moment in time—a literal snapshot of a place. But according to Katy, people make the best postcards. If you visit a place often enough, every time you go back, you'll inevitably find faces you've seen before. Locals whom you've noticed many times—and who have perhaps noticed you—although you may know nothing about them. May have never even spoken… and yet they are every bit a landmark of your experience of the city as an Eiffel Tower or a Colosseum.

Maybe it's the cashier at the supermarket down the street from the apartment you once rented, perhaps it's the accordion player who always sits on the same corner, or the young mother in the park who has a new baby every time you see her. How they change or don't change, age or seemingly defy the ravages of time, how their eyes might linger on you with a glimmer of half-recognition before returning to their inner world—these are the snapshots that truly color a city, and a return traveler's experience of it.

Katy and Tiffany explore this idea in Episode 218: POSTCARDS.

Episode 217: BILINGUAL (with Kristie Prada) Aug 06, 2018
    Show notes

Want to raise a bilingual child? Whether you are an expat or not, in a mixed-culture relationship or not, it is possible to raise your child in two (or more) languages, and the benefits you will pass on to your child are significant. But how do you go about it?

Today Katy sits down with British mum Kristie Prada, author and creator of the blog Mamma Prada. She and her Italian husband live in the UK and are serious about raising their children to speak both languages flawlessly. In her effort to do just that, she has become an expert on childhood bilingualism, and shares that knowledge onto her blog.

On this episode, Kristie shares her favorite resources for raising children in two language, the most interesting of which is double-language book series by One Third Stories. Instead of presenting the two languages side by side, these books introduce foreign words into the text slowly, until they eventually take over. Before you know it, your child is reading an entire book in a second language! She also shares the brilliant idea of teaching your child about the other country and its culture as a way of piquing his or her interest in the language (instead of the other way around), and offers tips and tricks for staying strong when your older child resists the minority language.

If bilingualism is something you want for your child, this is the episode for you!

This episode also features a bonus appearance by none other than Tiffany's son Aurelio, who offers a peek into the mind of a bilingual toddler, and answers Katy's hard-hitting questions, such as, "What does a cow say?"

You can also find Kristie Prada on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Episode 216: ORVIETO (with Linda Martinez and Toni De Bella) Jul 30, 2018
    Show notes

We often talk about expat life in big cities like Rome. But what's it like to be a foreigner in a small village where everyone knows everyone?

On this week's episode {ORVIETO}, we catch up with two Americans living in the tiny central Italian town of Orvieto—two expats whom we interviewed for the first time back in 2014. Toni De Bella (Episode 34: Venture) moved to Orvieto in 2012 alone after raising her son. Linda Martinez (Episode 33: Parents) is the owner of The Beehive Hostel in Rome; she's been in Italy for most of the past few decades, but she and her husband Steve Brenner decided to settle in Orvieto with their three daughters several years ago in search of a slower pace of life.

We reconnect with them (together this time) four years later to see how life in small-town Italy is treating them. What do they still love about Orvieto? And what do they wish visitors to Italy knew about it? What has started to wear on them? What—if anything—makes them consider moving back to the big city? And how do they know when the town has become "theirs"?

Listen in on this casual conversation among friends, and you might just decide to add Orvieto to your next Italian vacation itinerary…or sell everything you own and move there like Toni and Linda did. Episode 216: ORVIETO.

Want more from Toni and Linda?

To learn more about Orvieto and why Toni fell in love with it, visit her blog, Orvieto or Bust. You can also follow her on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. Or check out her episode on House Hunters International.

If you're planning a trip to Rome, check out Linda's family-run hostel, The Beehive. You can also find her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

    Episode 215: SUMMIT Jul 23, 2018
    Show notes

After the wild week in the news in the US, Katy and Tiffany take a brief break from their recent Rome-based episodes to discuss the events surrounding the now infamous Helsinki Summit. In the course of their commiserations, they wonder what is harder: having to live through the chaos as it unfolds in your own back yard, or living a world away in an expat bubble and not having anyone to talk to about it. What's worse: inundation or isolation?

Which leads to another observation: when you live so long out of your home country, and especially when you acquire citizenship to your adopted country and start a family there, you can begin to lose the allegiance to your home country. Does that make you less patriotic? Can expats be excused for closing their eyes and focusing on life in their new country, or should they remain just as involved as they would be if they were still living in their hometown.

Katy and Tiffany discuss these and more related topics on Episode 215 {SUMMIT} of The Bittersweet Life podcast.

    Episode 214: RUDE Jul 16, 2018
    Show notes

Have you ever walked into someone's house in Japan with your shoes on and had a room full of people laugh at you? (Katy has.) Have you ever traipsed into a room in an Italian home that has been freshly mopped and been given the evil eye by the lady of the house? (Tiffany has.)

Part of living in a foreign culture is learning (often the hard way) that some things that are totally acceptable back home are, at best, a faux pas in your adopted country, and, at worst, a humiliating gaff. Picking up on the social rules of your new country is part of adjusting to life abroad. To a certain extent, all expats go through it.

But what makes things rude in one culture and acceptable in another? What does it say about the people of those countries, and what they value? Why is it ok to litter on the street in Italy, but not ok to wash your hands in the kitchen sink? Why is it fine, in Italy, to wave to get your waiter's attention, but unspeakably rude to leave a shop without saying "grazie, arrivederci"—the exact opposite of which is true in the US?

And what happens when you pick up habits that are perfectly acceptable in your new country, and take them back home with you, where they are seen as downright rude? (Case in point: after a one-year stint in Rome, polite, mild-mannered Katy has taken to cutting lines, a heinous crime in America and merely an eye-rolling annoyance in Italy.)

We discuss these social conundrums and etiquette paradoxes and try to make sense of it all on this week's new episode, {RUDE}.

    Episode 213: IN-LAWS Jul 09, 2018
    Show notes

The best thing about marrying an Italian? You're automatically part of a big Italian family. The worst thing about marrying an Italian? You're automatically part of a big Italian family.

If you're a regular listener to the show, you've heard Tiffany talk about (and sometimes complain about) her Italian in-laws for years—especially during those long months when she and her husband lived with them when in between apartments.

This week, Tiffany's mother-in-law, Luisa and father-in-law, Rocco, join us to speak for themselves. Katy and Tiffany discuss many topics with this couple who have been married for 40 years, including the closeness of the Italian family unit, how they first met, which of their three children is the favorite, and what they thought when their only son brought home an American girl.

A hilarious episode ensues, in which we finally learn if they dislike each other as much as they pretend to.

Episode 212: ETHNICITY (with Estrella Gomez) Jul 02, 2018
    Show notes

Issues of race and diversity are on everyone's lips and minds in the United States right now. But people in Italy are just starting to have these conversations. In a country where, until quite recently, everyone had a similar racial make-up, perhaps it simply wasn't necessary until now.

In an interview with our former intern, first generation Salvadoran American Estrella Gomez, we probe the issues facing an expat of color in a place that is just now getting used to its status as a country that people immigrate to, rather than from. Does Estrella get treated any differently than an expat who can pass for an Italian, like Katy, or one who fits the American racial stereotype, like Tiffany? How has her experience as an expat in Rome differed from ours?

We also ask the question: if your parents were immigrants, do you have the right to move abroad? Does it somehow make their sacrifice less meaningful?

We broach these and other thought-provoking topics on this week's episode {ETHNICITY}.

Learn more about Estrella Gomez at her blog, La Casa Bloga. You can also find her on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Episode 211: SIRENUSE (with Antonio Sersale) Jun 25, 2018
    Show notes

What happens when you say "no" to your destiny…only to discover that it brings you more joy than you could have imagined?

This week, Katy interviews Antonio Sersale, son of one of the four founding siblings of the legendary Le Sirenuse Hotel in Postiano on the Amalfi Coast. From a young age, Antonio was groomed to take over the family business of running the hotel, but he resisted for many years, convinced that the life of a hotelier wasn't for him.

Then, one day he changed his mind. During a recent stay at this exquisite boutique hotel overlooking its namesake Sirenuse Islands, Katy interviewed Antonio about what changed his mind and—more importantly—what it is about his job that he loves more than he could ever have dreamed of as a young man.

Listen in to their fascinating conversation, and consider what could be waiting for you in your own life, if you would simply say "yes."

Wonder what the hotel is like? Check out this video.

Episode 210: CORRESPONDENT (with Michael Maren) Jun 18, 2018
    Show notes

After a transformative trip to India during college, Michael Maren realized that in order to feel fully alive, he had to go back overseas. He joined the Peace Corps after graduating and a series of chance events led him to Kenya, where he stayed for the next five years, teaching English, Physics, and Swahili at a local secondary school, and he later worked as an aid worker in both Kenya and Somalia. After returning to the States for graduate school, Maren eventually became a war correspondent. From Uganda during the overthrow of Idi Amin in 1979 to Somalia during the height of the Somali Civil War in the early '90s, Maren has lived and worked in some of the dangerous places and situations on the planet.

In our latest episode, Katy travels to Positano on the Amalfi Coast, where she met up with Michael and interviewed him about his experiences covering conflict across the African continent. They discuss the trap of expat privilege, the negative effects of foreign aid on developing countries, and the delusions many war correspondents have that they are special enough to survive.

Maren is now an author and screenwriter. His book The Road to Hell explains how misguided foreign aid, charity, development assistance, and food relief in developing countries have propagated a culture of destructive dependency that damages the local economy and promotes corruption. He also wrote and produced the film A Short History of Decay starring Bryan Greenberg and Linda Lavin, is currently working on a new film, Shriver.

    Episode 209: REPURPOSE Jun 11, 2018
    Show notes

This week, we hit the streets of Rome with our recording equipment to search for ancient artifacts or "spoglie" hidden in plain sight. Rome has been inhabited without interruption for over three thousand of years. A past like that cannot but leave its mark on a city. And if you keep your eyes open, the vestiges of Rome's ancient past can be found around almost every corner.

From the fluted Corinthian columns walled into the sides of nondescript buildings to the piazza that follows the shape of the ancient stadium it was built upon, from the crumbling Roman buildings that found new life as Renaissance palaces to the fragments of ancient decoration plastered into the walls of medieval buildings…the history of Rome is palpable in its very urban fabric.

You don't have to visit an archeological site or even a museum to discover the city's many layers of history. Just take a long rambling walk through Rome's historic center and you'll find the tangible ghosts of the ancient city coming to life all around you.

Want to follow along with us? Here's a list of the stops we make on our passeggiata:

    • Ponte Fabricio
    • Torre dei Caetani (*Note: Tiffany mistakenly refers to it as the Torre dei Crescenzi in the episode. Oops!)
    • Portico Of Octavia
    • Theater of Marcellus (and Palazzo Orsini)
    • Largo di Torre Argentina (and the Cat Sanctuary)
    • Piazza Navona (and Sant'Agnese in Agone Church)
    • Piazza di Pietra and the Temple of Hadrian
