    Bittersweet Moment #51: LOCKDOWN, Part 4 Mar 26, 2020
    Show notes

How are our daily lives changed due to quarantine and life during the coronavirus outbreak?

It seems like every day something changes: restrictions get tighter, a new epicenter emerges, and the new theories on the best way to conquer this crisis emerge.

It's hard to keep up, so we like to check in with you from time to time to let you know how we are faring—and hear from you as well. This week, we read a letter from a listener (and recent expat in Italy) who, despite the challenges, is finding the joy and beauty in life under lockdown.

    Episode 307: REPORTING Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

When did a podcast about travel, living abroad, embracing adventure, and going off the script become about… staying home all day, every day?

Since coronavirus, that's when. The Bittersweet Life is certainly not the only media platform that is suddenly all about the spread of this virus and the quarantines around the world that it is necessitating.

So today we ask, what's it like to cover a major world-wide news story that changes and develops practically every day and blots out every other thing going on? How do you keep up with the story and find new ways of looking at it? And what happens when you, as a reporter, become part of the story? And what kind of people thrive in these situations?

We discuss this and more in our latest episode. In addition, Katy sits down with Patricia Murphy, an award-winning NPR reporter who covers justice and public health in Seattle, as well as one of Katy's former colleagues. Patricia just launched the NPR podcast Seattle Now, and has found herself dedicating the entire premise of the new show (so far) to the growing crisis.

Check out the Seattle Now podcast on their website or on Apple podcasts.

Find out more about Patricia Murphy here or follow her on Twitter.

    Bittersweet Moment #50: LOCKDOWN, Part 3 Mar 18, 2020
    Show notes

Lockdown has hit the United States—at least in some parts of the country. And people all around the nation are choosing to self-isolate.

On this mini-episode, Katy and Tiffany discuss the realities of life under quarantine, including the practical things you need to do if you must leave your house.

They also wonder if self-isolation will make enough of a difference, or if a nationwide lawful quarantine is the only way to combat the spread of Coronavirus.

Tiffany also lays out Italy's grim numbers, which are about to eclipse even China's heart-wrenching statistics.

***More cheerful episodes starting next week, we promise!!***

    Show notes

The lockdown in Italy continues on the second part of Monday's episode, and as each moment passes, lockdown looms across the United States and the world.

Tiffany shares some tips with Katy and our listeners for what to expect when their own quarantine inevitably arrives.

She also explains why Italians aren't hoarding toilet paper, and together they ponder the cultural benefits of a world-wide plague.

    Episode 305: LOCKDOWN, Part 1 Mar 16, 2020
    Show notes

Italy is on lockdown. No going out except for basic necessities for medical reasons—or work if you absolutely cannot work from home. How is Tiffany coping? How is she staying sane, keeping her four-year-old entertained, and resisting tearing her husband limb from limb?

We check in with Tiffany on today's episode, and hear from Katy how Seattle is responding to the rapid spread of coronavirus in Washington State and the rest of the US. Does she think there is a lockdown in her future?

Bittersweet Moment #49: VIRUS UPDATE, Part 2 Mar 12, 2020

We discuss in our second mini-episode of the week. We also touch on some of the financial repercussions that are threatening Tiffany and her family as well the entire country.

    Episode 304: VIRUS Mar 06, 2020
    Show notes

Tiffany and Katy are both living in two of the epicenters of the devastating coronavirus, Italy and Washington State.

This week, they chat about their parallel but distinct experiences, how the spread of the virus is affecting their lives, what like is life in their cities, and their uncertainty about the future. Katy proposes that it might be the ideal moment for a Roman holiday.

Note: This episode was recorded a week before publication so lots of things have changed since then. We will be putting out a special mini-episode to update the situation, so look out for that in the coming days.

Check out this New York Times article by Italian journalist Beppe Severgnini that Tiffany talks about.

Bittersweet Moment #47: How to get an agent with PITMAD Mar 05, 2020
    Show notes

How do you get a literary agent?

For many aspiring writers, it can seem like an impossible task, and yet it's a necessary step on the road to getting your book published. But with agents receiving literally hundreds of queries per day, how can you possibly get noticed?

    Tiffany has a better way.

Earlier this year, Tiffany was awarded a prestigious fellowship by the PEN America literary organization for her work in progress, the YA historical thriller Saving Caravaggio. On occasion of the awards ceremony, she takes the opportunity to spill her guts about about the ingenious (and low-effort) way she got an agent. And here's the best part: anyone can do it.

PS If you are actively looking for an agent, we suggest you listen to this episode the day it airs. (You'll soon find out why.)

Find more info about this process here.

Episode 303: FALCON THIEF (with Joshua Hammer) Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

A globe-trotting rare bird egg thief, a detective hell bent on protecting the world's birds of prey, and a writer who stitches it all into a brilliant story. Today we talk to that very writer, Joshua Hammer, who also happens to be an expat living in Berlin with his family.

The Falcon Thief: A True Tail of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird "whisks readers from the volcanoes of Patagonia to Zimbabwe's Matobo National Park, and from the frigid tundra near the Arctic Circle to luxurious aviaries in the deserts of Dubai, all in pursuit of a man who is reckless, arrogant, and gripped by a destructive compulsion to make the most beautiful creatures in nature his own. It's a story that's part true-crime narrative, part epic adventure—and wholly unputdownable until the very last page."

Listen in for an interview with author Joshua Hammer and order the book here.
