Episode 491: When Will the Bubble Burst? Jul 31, 2023
    Show notes

How long does the magic of Rome last to an expat?

We recently received an email from a listener, an Australian who spent 5 years in Milan and has now been living in Rome for over a year. He wonders: when will the bubble burst? How long will he feel like his entire life is surreal, like he is living in a dream? Does the magic of living in Italy ever pass? Does it ever become mundane?

Tiffany and Katy have lots of opinions. Listen in as they discuss!

PS LIsteners are always welcome to send in questions! If your question resonates, we may just dedicate an entire episode to it! Email us your questions here. Better yet, send a recording of you asking the question! (Just use the voice memo app on your phone and email that.)

    Episode 489: What's in a Name? Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

Today we talk names. What names are most popular for kids in Italy these days? Which are evergreen favorites and how does popular culture play a part? And are old-fashioned grandpa and grandma names back in style in Italy as they are in the US? And speaking of, what are the most popular baby names in the States right now? Can you guess better than Katy can?

Also, what if our parents had gone with one of the other names they were considering for us? Is it possible that our lives (and even our personalities) would be different if we'd had different names?

And just for fun—what are the sexiest names, and what makes them sexy? How is it possible that this metric can change so much over time?

This episode was originally aired as a bonus episode exclusively for our Patreon supporters, but we've decided to post it here as well to give all our listeners a little taste of what goes on behind the paywall. We have a lot of fun over on Patreon, with off-topic episodes, lots of laughs, and some deeply personal conversations (our ex-boyfriends episode was one of our favorites).

In a very rare move for us, we will be pausing the show for the month of August—don't worry, we're starting a brand new season come September! But if you think you'll miss us popping into your podcast feed twice a week, why not join us over on Patreon for as little as $5 per month? You'll get access to the now sizable archive of bonus episodes we've been producing twice a month for the past few years, delivered right to your feed! (Plus, we will be putting out two new bonus episoes this August, even though the main show will be on hiatus.) Best of all, you'll be supporting the show you love. This independent podcast (run, produced, and paid for only by the two of us!) would literally not be possible without the generous support of our Patreon supporters and regular donors. Thank you so much for your support!

Episode 488: Hanging Out with the Dead Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

Do dead bodies make you squeamish? Have you ever seen one up close?

For some, attending an open-casket funeral or a wake is as close as they'll ever come. For others, their career (funeral home director, embalmer, coroner...), close encounters with the dead are a regular fact of life.

Then there are Romans, who, whether they notice it or not, are never very far away from a corpse—dead bodies of popes on full display in St. Peter's, graves are underfoot more often than not, and skulls and bones can pop up where you least expect them.

Today we talk about what it's like to hang out with the dead.

Bittersweet Moment #214: Lost in Translation: The Italian Movie Game! Jul 06, 2023
    Show notes

Mamma Ho Perso L'Aereo! (Mom, I Missed the Airplane!) This is the Italian title for a popular American movie—can you guess which one?

On our twice-monthly bonus episodes, which we put out exclusively for our Patreon members and regular donors, we often talk about silly things, off-topic subjects, and deeply personal stories we prefer not to share with the entire world. And sometimes we continue a conversation we started on a regular episode.

Today we're offering a peek behind the paywall with the continuation of a fun game we played (Guess the movie by the weird Italian title) on a regular episode.

Join us on Patreon here to get access to fun episodes like this every other week! We thank you in advance from the bottom of our little podcasting hearts!

Episode 487: An Italian Woman in America (with Rosanna Staffa) Jul 03, 2023

Today we sit down with Rosanna Staffa, an Italian-born playwright and author who lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.. Her debut novel The War Ends at Four is out now. Listen in to hear first-hand about the expat experience from the other perspective.

Bittersweet Moment #213: Trapped in Trastevere Jun 29, 2023
    Show notes

Tiffany has been complaining about the criminal way in which Romans park since nearly the dawn of her now-dormant blog back in 2010. And becoming a Roman driver herself has not cooled her resentment towards the selfish jerks who park with complete disregard to their fellow citizens.

But last weekend it got personal.

After a Saturday evening out in Trastevere, Tiffany and her husband Claudio returned to their (legally parked) car to find it blocked in by an (illegally parked) car. They were, quite literally, trapped. For hours. How did this adventure end? You'll have to listen in to find out.

    Episode 486: Mom's (Necessary) Weekend Away Jun 25, 2023
    Show notes

This month, Tiffany took her first solo (non-work-related) trip since becoming a mom almost 8 years ago! (What took her so long?)

We reflect on the thoughts and realizations that came to her during this much-needed weekend get-away, specifically why she thinks it's vital that every mom take at least one trip away from her family every year.
