You might have heard the saying that "dog training is both an art and science." And I kind of agree with that statement because training plans, even when rigorously based in science, can often benefit from creative thinking.
I can’t think of any other trainer that thinks more creatively in the work she has done with dogs, especially the dogs who have issues on-leash. Leslie McDevitt's "Look at That" (L.A.T.) from her seminal work with the Control Unleashed series is just one example of the outside the box thinking that goes on in her brain, and in this episode we chat about an awesome variety of ideas where Leslie’s creativity shines through including things like LATTE, Cooperative Counter Conditioning, and Pattern Games, all used to help dogs with aggression.

Her books have been translated into many languages, and she has helped people all over the world learn how to use her science-based methods to help companion, performance, and working dogs learn how to functional optimally without stress in very challenging environments.
For close to twenty years, Leslie's methods have empowered diverse populations of dogs--companion dogs, shelter dogs, competitive performance dogs, K9 SAR and detection dogs, therapy dogs, and more. If you have a dog that worries about stuff that happens—other dogs, people, noises, the unexpected–or you are a giant behavior nerd that is interested in counter conditioning with an operant base using startbutton behaviors--Leslie has lots of tools for you.

Hey friends, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a many of the wonderful takeaways for me from recording The Bitey End of the Dog, and I can truly say I really am so grateful for this opportunity to learn from my guests.
And two of the things that are top of mind as far as value to me are bringing in new concepts that can often be desperately needed in our work with dogs, and of course, learning new ideas to help the humans that are in the lives of the dogs we are working with.
Marissa Martino is my guest for this episode of Fresh Bites and we focus on the all important relationships between the client and trainer, the client and dog, and the dog and trainer using her Six Connection Principles. It’s a fantastic episode that I think you are going to truly enjoy.

    Show notes

You guys have heard me say it before, but so much of what I have learned to help dogs with aggression issues has come from amazing icons in our community who have been so generous to share their knowledge and insight with the world. One such amazing trainer is none other than Trish King. Have you heard of the umbrella method to deal with off-leash dogs trying to harass or attack your on-leash dog? Yup, that credit goes to Trish.

In this fantastic conversation, Trish and I chat about a variety of topics around helping dogs with aggression, as well as avoiding it in the first place through things like socialization...and when I say socialization, it may not be quite what you are thinking.

Daniel Shaw CDBC Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

In this season, you might have noticed we’ve talked about systematic approaches to changing behavior several times, which is exciting for me to see happening as we can sometimes witness spaghetti on the wall approaches in dog training.
Daniel Shaw joins me for this episode of Fresh Bites on the Bitey End of the Dog for a wonderful chat around his systematic formulation approach to working with aggression in dogs. This can include principles such as CBT skills, systemic counseling principles, and psychodynamic principles. These might seem like fancy words, but Daniel does a fantastic job of breaking things down in an understandable way.

This show would have never been possible without all the learning I've been fortunate to do with so many incredible trainers over the years. I’m definitely standing on the shoulders of giants, and one such giant in our community is Sarah Kalnajs of Blue Dog Training.
Sarah and I chat about a number of interesting topics during this episode, including building trust and rapport with our clients, and why that is important, as well as some interesting cases we’ve experienced over the years, and we also discuss a tragic case that recently occurred with a petsitter in Texas that you may have seen in the media.
So I hope you are able to gain some nice takeaways from this episode with the always insightful Sarah Kalnajs.

    Show notes

Sometimes as dog trainers, we focus much of our attention on the dog, and meeting the needs of that dog in front of us. Though, we can sometimes lose sight of the person on the other end of the leash, and accommodating their needs as well.
In this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog I have an educational conversation with Abigail Witthauer about effectively working with people with disabilities, and ensuring that success can happen at both ends of the leash.
Abigail also gives excellent advice on addressing the issue of ableism in the dog training community, and I hope the conversation about the many issues with ableism, and how it can impact our friends and colleagues, continues beyond this podcast.

What does the study of neuroscience have to do with aggression in dogs? A lot. In this episode I take a deep dive into what happens in the brain with none other than Dr. Kathy Murphy. Kathy always has amazing insight about what happens when a dog might be barking, lunging, growling, snarling, or biting, from a neurobiological perspective. One of my absolute favorite things about traveling is not so much seeing all the typical tourist attractions, but going out and watching the behavior and culture of dogs in countries. We can learn so, so much by observing how dogs navigate their worlds in other places on our planet. And I’ve been wanting to chat with Sindhoor Pangal for a long time because she is one of the world’s foremost experts on street dogs, or streeties as she refers to them in the most endearing way.
We chat about the challenges the dogs face, living in India, as well as the many benefits of not actually being confined in a home environment. I think you will really enjoy hearing Sindhoor share her unique insights in this episode.
