Deuteronomy: in-depth Bible study -5 videos (Bryan Styles)

This study considers the final words that Moses delivers to the people. As they stand on the edge of the Promised Land, Moses gives them much to reflect on after their long Wilderness journey. There are many practical family considerations to take away from Moses' counsel to the Children of Israel. We too are on the edge of the Promised Land and have to make the decision today if we will be of the number who inherit the land promised to the faithful.

Evidence for belief in the God of the bible #3 'Can we believe the Gospels accounts?' Oct 31, 2022

Show notes

A Christadelphian Video: The Gospels are our main information about the work and teaching of Jesus Christ. They speak of a man approved of God who rose from the dead and who promised to return. They contain the words of the world’s greatest moral teacher. Ever. So how do we know that the Gospels are an accurate representation of the teaching of Jesus? This video shows how.

The evidence for the reliability of the Gospels has many strands. We can compare the places, customs and events described in the Gospels with the discoveries of archaeologists; the fact that the Gospels are correct here shows their reliability in general. We can compare various accounts in the Gospels and note that the details match one another; this would not happen if the Gospels were full of mistakes or the detail had become obscured by transmission.

Objective studies of the dates of the Gospels show that they were written well within the living memory, not only of their writers but also of many other people who would remember what had happened and would have objected if the Gospels had been inaccurate. Passages to look at: John 4:5,6,15; John 5:2; John 9:7. For comparison of details look at the accounts of the Feeding of the Five Thousand: Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-13

Evidence for belief in the God of the bible #2 'The Gospels and the Old Testament' Oct 30, 2022

Show notes

A Christadelphian Video: The Gospels are important documents which tell us about the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. However, it is not possible to understand the Gospels without the Old Testament. This video shows how the Gospel message grows out of the Old Testament, and how the Old Testament contains a picture of the Gospel and how the Old Testament helps us to understand the Gospel.

One of the amazing features of the Bible is that all the books in it are consistent in their teaching. The teaching of the books of Genesis, Psalms and Isaiah is the same as the teaching of Jesus in the Gospels or the teaching of the Apostles in Acts or the letters. This is all the more remarkable in that the religions of the ancient world were polytheistic, believed in an immortal component of mankind which would continue after death, were heavily focussed on the effects of the gods on the prosperity of their followers in the world (for example the fertility of crops, and success in battle) and had no moral demands to make on the devotee. Basic ideas in the Gospel come from the Old Testament.

The Kingdom of God is an Old Testament, as is the idea of judgement and of a covenant where humans make an agreement with God. Even the word “Christ” comes from the Old Testament. Without the Old Testament, the New Testament has much less value. Passages to look at: Isaiah 53; Psalm 2; Psalm 72; Genesis 22

Detailed examination of John's Gospel in relation to the doctrine of the Trinity - 10 studies Oct 29, 2022

Show notes

The Gospel of John is often used to support the idea of the deity of Jesus, but the reality is that it teaches very strongly that Jesus is not God. This presentation looks at some of the lesser-known passages in John's Gospel and shows how they make clear statements that Jesus is not God. Instead the Gospel explains how Jesus, although not God, shows us what God is like. Jesus is not God; he is the Son of God.
