Thought for October 27th. “… THEY WOULD NOT PAY ATTENTION” Oct 27, 2024
    Show notes

    Today’s readings.. (2 Chronicles 24), (Daniel 5), (Acts 3,4)

We felt we could have written a ‘book’ of ‘thoughts’ arising from today’s 4 chapters – each will, if read with real feeling, stir our hearts and lift them into meaningful spiritual perceptions. In Chronicles the events in the life of King Joash contained absorbing lessons. He became king when only 7 under special circumstances, he was guided for most of his life by the faithful high priest Jehoiada and while he was alive Joash acted wisely and the Temple was restored to its former glory and the nation prospered.

We can see comparisons with the restoration of the knowledge of God’s word when printing was invented and the Bible became available everywhere and respect for its’ divine message spread through the world. Jehoiada found wives for the king and obviously mentored him. Sadly after the death of Jehoiada, “the king listened to … the princes of Judah” [24 v.17] – other members of the royal family – who, not appreciating the spiritual values Jehoiada had put in place, “they abandoned the temple of the LORD” [v.18]. As a result “wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem”. When “the son of Jehoiada” challenged them, “they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the LORD” [v.21]. After his death “God sent prophets among them to bring them back to the LORD… These testified … but they would not pay attention.” [v.19]

God judged the king and the nation and “at the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came against Joash.” [v.23] and he died as a result of his wounds. We see the comparison with today – and the impending judgements of God on a world that has turned away from belief in its’ Creator and sustainer, despite God’s word being so readily available, but “they will not pay attention.”

Our chapter 5 in Daniel describes events leading to the end of the Babylonian kingdom that Nebuchadnezzar set up, despite how he finally found and wrote praises and “blessed the Most High” as we read yesterday; his descendent (grandson?) Belshazzar, was blind to these blessings. The message the aged Daniel brought to him was “God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end … you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting.” [v.26,27] And God has surely nearly completed ‘weighing’ our richly blessed world and found it seriously “wanting” that is, totally lacking, in any effort to “pay attention” to him. But the final question is surely to us personally, how effectively do we “pay attention“?

You Call me Master and Lord... with Gary Steel Oct 26, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: You call me master and LordThe purpose of this presentation is to explore the way the Lord Jesus Christ is referred to throughout the New Testament, this exploration was stimulated by the realisation that over recent decades the Lord Jesus Christ has been ’demoted’ to simple ‘Jesus” both in general reference to our Lord in talks and also in the closing of prayers where instead of the specified formula asking all things in the “name of Lord Jesus Christ” the singular name Jesus is used instead. In some cases simply a reference to “in your son’s name” is considered a suitable way to close a pray and has become popular. We propose that this casualisation of our Lord’s name is part of a general trend across a number of areas of Christian practise. The thoughts we propose in this talk are meant as discussion points rather than absolute dogmatic assertions, however, it is our conviction that the popular way the Lord is referred to these days does not reflect the teaching of scripture on the subject, minimises his work and diminishes his status which was dearly through his life and death. If our argument is faulty in a particular detail, we welcome feedback. To his disciples jesus was master and Lord titles which He acknowledged were appropriate, almighty God designated Jesus as both Lord and Christ a position attained by his sinless life, obedience to death resulting in his resurrection and ascension to the right hand of his father and yet to many today he is simply Jesus, is this appropriate?# SummaryThis PRESENTATION explores the significance of how the Lord Jesus Christ is referred to in the scriptures compared to contemporary usage. It argues that the casual reference to Jesus, often simply as "Jesus," lacks the respect and reverence found in biblical texts. The speaker emphasises the importance of using appropriate titles, such as "Lord" and "Master," to honour Jesus and maintain the dignity of the relationship between believers and Christ, especially in prayer.# Highlights- 📖 **Biblical Titles Matter**: The presentation stresses that the New Testament consistently refers to Jesus with titles like "Lord" and "Master," indicating a respectful relationship rather than casual familiarity.- 🙏 **Closing Prayers**: It suggests that prayers should be concluded with "in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ" to acknowledge His authority and the significance of His role in salvation.- 🌍 **Cultural Casualness**: The speaker notes that the informal approach to addressing Jesus reflects a broader trend of casualness in society, which contrasts with biblical teachings on respect and honour.# keyword#Jesus #Respect #Prayer ****************************************************************************** This video was produced by the ChristadelphianVideo.org project, arranged and supported by Christadelphians worldwide. Locating Sodom and Gomorrah using the Bible and archaeology with Vernon Dove Oct 26, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: Description: The location of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by God has two main suggestions, the more commonly accepted one being south of the Dead Sea. Here an examination is made of the archaeological evidence for Tall-el-Hammam, north-east of the Dead Sea, as a possible more likely location using evidence from the Bible in its support. The right time is considered as well as the "right stuff", the artefacts uncovered during the archaeological study of the area. A meteor airburst is proposed as the likely cause of the destruction.

    # Summary The PRESENTATION by Vernon Dove explores the identification of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. It outlines the criteria for locating these cities based on biblical descriptions, including geographical references, chronological timing, and architectural features. The presenter discusses various theories regarding the cities' locations and provides evidence from archaeological findings that align with biblical accounts, ultimately suggesting Tal al-Hammam as a candidate for Sodom. # Highlights - 🌍 **Geographical Identification**: The presenter emphasises the need to find the right location for Sodom by analysing biblical texts, particularly Genesis 13, which describes the Jordan Valley as a well-watered area that Lot chose for his settlement. - ⏳ **Chronological Context**: The timing of Sodom's destruction is linked to the birth of Isaac, placing the event around 1847 BC. Archaeological findings from Tal al-Hammam correspond to this timeline, indicating a sudden end of occupation during the Middle Bronze Age. - 🏛️ **Architectural Evidence**: The characteristics of Sodom's architecture, such as fortified walls and urban layout, align with Middle Bronze Age cities. Excavations reveal large structures, public squares, and evidence of destruction that match biblical descriptions. - 🔥 **Destruction Analysis**: The presentation discusses the nature of Sodom's destruction, suggesting a catastrophic event, possibly a meteor explosion, which left a thick layer of ash and debris, consistent with the biblical account of fire and sulfur raining down from the heavens. # Keywords #Sodom #Gomorrah #Archaeology

Thought for October 26th. “THOSE WHO RECEIVED HIS WORD” Oct 26, 2024
    Show notes

Today we read the dramatic account of the events that followed after the disciples were empowered by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Led by Peter, they preached in such a way about Jesus, who he was and what he had done, and the terrible events to come that the hearers “were cut to the heart” [Acts 2 v.37].

The words which had pierced their conscience were, “Let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” [v.36]. What can you know for certain today? More and more have convinced themselves that there is no God and they can live their lives just as they feel because they have no belief or faith: sadly Australia’s present Prime Minister is an example of this.

We have been reading of a similar state of affairs in Chronicles where Kings in Jerusalem followed Baal worship with all its immoral behaviour – and chaos followed. Peter in his address to the people at Pentecost quoted extensively from Joel in a passage which has an application to both the end of the Jewish age in AD70 and our Gentile age, events which are today soon to happen as God makes his power known in an awesome way.

How literal are we to understand the words Peter quotes? We must not explain them away. “I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And … everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” [v.19-21]

Our final and most telling thought is the words used to describe the response to Peter’s challenge, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation” [v.40] We partly quoted them in our heading – “so those who received his word were baptised.” Note the word “received”! It is one thing to read, to hear and to listen, but the only thing that really matters is when the words are “received” Have you “received” them?

Thought for October 25th. “BUT YOU WILL BE BAPTISED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT” Oct 25, 2024
    Show notes

Today we started reading the book of Acts. So many things in it are relevant to our efforts to serve Christ today, but it is important that we read it carefully; regrettably some do not. It begins with a summary of the final days of Jesus before he ascended to heaven “after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the Apostles whom he had chosen” [2]; it was a period of 40 days. (v.3)

We notice how “he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the father … you will be baptised by the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” [v.5] To whom was he making this promise? These 12 Apostles were now only 11 because of the tragedy of Judas Iscariot, so Peter says (v.21-23) that they must find a replacement “to take the place of this ministry and apostleship” [v.26]. To do this they end up casting lots – and the last verse reads “and the lot fell to Matthias and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.”

It becomes evident that only the 12 received the promised Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. When the day came it was just the 12 who were standing up before the people (2 v.14) which some sceptics were accusing of being drunk (v.15). We need to recall last week’s reading in John’s Gospel where Jesus was promising them the “spirit of truth”, a “helper” would be “sent to you from the father” [Ch.15 v26; 16 v.13].

This Spirit, says Jesus, “will guide you into all the Truth.” It “will declare to you things to come” and will “bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” [14 v.26]. It is obvious that this Divine source of help is specially for the twelve, they are to be “baptised” into it by having the power come upon them. As we read on in Acts 2 we will learn that a “gift” was promised to the converts, but required the presence of one or more of the disciples for it to be given (Acts 8 v.14-17). In today’s chapter we see that the disciples were hoping the kingdom would be established right then (v.6); but no, they were to be witnesses, beginning “in Jerusalem … to the end of the earth.” [v.8] This commission to the apostles concluded with the passing of the apostle John, but the Spirit through their written word continues to spread to all parts of the earth even now.

The Time of The End #1 'Too Fast' (Adelaide Combined Ecclesia Bible Study Weekend 2024) With Nathan Lewis Oct 24, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: # Summary This presentation discusses the challenges faced by disciples living in the time of the end, where the pace of life has become increasingly fast and overwhelming. The speaker emphasises the need to slow down, stand still, and seek God's perspective amidst the frantic rush of the world. # Highlights 🕰️ The world is moving at an unprecedented pace, with everything happening faster and faster. Statistics show that the average walking speed has increased by 10% in just 13 years, and many people are experiencing symptoms of burnout and exhaustion. 🔍 The speaker uses examples from the Bible, such as the Israelites at the Red Sea and the Jordan River, to illustrate the importance of standing still and allowing God to work. When we stand still, we can see God's salvation and perspective, which is often obscured by the constant motion of the world. 🕯️ The speaker suggests a practical solution: setting a clock 10 minutes fast, creating "God's time" where we can intentionally slow down, recalibrate, and reconnect with eternal things. This allows us to resist the pull of the world's frantic pace and focus on what truly matters. 🧭 The presentation emphasises the need for disciples to separate themselves from the "many" who are running to and fro, and instead stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. This is a crucial preparation for the coming of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. # Keywords - End Times - Pace of Life - Spiritual Discipline #Timestamps00:00 - Introduction to the topic of the time of the end and the challenges faced by disciples. 02:00 - Exploration of the phrase "many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased" from Daniel 12:4. 05:00 - Examination of the increasing speed and pace of life in the modern world, with statistics and examples. 12:00 - Presentation of the biblical principle of "standing still" as the solution to the frantic pace of life, using examples from Exodus, Joshua, and Luke. 22:00 - Discussion of the story of Naaman and Gehazi in 2 Kings 5, highlighting the importance of standing still before God. 27:00 - Exploration of 1 Peter 4:1-5 and the call to not be swept up in the "flood of dissipation" of the world. 30:00 - Presentation of Psalm 23 and the concept of finding rest and restoration in the "still waters" of God's presence. 33:00 - Suggestion of a practical solution: setting a clock 10 minutes fast to create "God's time" and intentionally slow down. 35:00 - Concluding remarks on the need for disciples to stand still and see God's salvation, in preparation for the coming of Christ. ****************************************************************************** This video was produced by the ChristadelphianVideo.org project, arranged and supported by Christadelphians worldwide. Thought for October 24th. “RABBONI!” Oct 24, 2024
    Show notes

We live in an age when scriptwriters, film and video makers employ very vivid imaginations to often create pictures of impossible scenes and events. We too can use our imaginations, but in a far more profitable way. Let’s take examples from our readings in John today. In Chapter 20, Mary Magdalene is weeping outside the tomb because it is empty. Through the veil of her tears she turns around to see a man standing there and assumes he is a gardener and thinks that he just might have removed the body from the tomb. “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away” [20 v.15]

What a request! What a distraught state of mind she had; a state of the deepest grief! She had come to touch the body of her beloved Lord for the last time and the body had been stolen. What anguish! Can you imagine it?

Jesus utters one word: her name. “Mary” Now imagine the compassion in his voice, a compassion she had heard before, many times. Does she instantly know it is him? “Rabboni” (teacher) this is the one word she exclaims – a huge question mark in her voice as her mind does a somersault trying to believe the “impossible”?

The A V version is not a good translation of the words of Jesus, “Touch me not” Modern versions have words like “do not cling to me … go and tell my brothers.” We can reasonably imagine that Mary almost threw herself at Jesus, scarcely daring to believe this person was real. What emotion, just imagine ….

Those who regularly read their Bibles get frustrated when they watch many of the movies, DVDs about some Bible story because the producers over dramatize and exaggerate and add things into it to make it more dramatic. But all who are regular and careful Bible readers can use their imagination properly, intelligently. Put your imagination to work on the climax to the fishing scene in Ch. 21 v.1 onwards. The dawn was just breaking, not easy to see … can you imagine yourself as one of those fishing?
