Why not make studying the Bible part of the rhythm of your daily life? The Bible Journey Daily Podcast is a 10-year plan to study through the entire Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Season one is a short overview of each of the sixty-six books of the Bible. Season two launched our expositional journey through the whole Bible, beginning with the book of Genesis. Thereafter, each season takes a New Testament/Old Testament alternatively until the project is complete. (God willing)  Why not join me on this exciting journey as we study the whole Bible together from Genesis to Revelation?

Zhuang Zhou - Taoism - A Christian Response (Apologetic)

This is my thoughts and reflection prior to spending an evening debating/discussing the the thoughts of Zhuang Zhou and Taoism.

Episode Notes: Zhuang Zhou: A Philosopher and His Enduring Influence

    Introduction:

Zhuang Zhou, also known as Zhuangzi, lived during the Warring States period in China (4th century BCE). He was an influential philosopher and writer whose teachings shaped Taoism and Chinese philosophy. This episode explores Zhuang Zhou's life, philosophical ideas, and his impact on contemporary thought, including Christianity.

Background - The History of Taoism:

    Ancient Origins:

    Development of Religious Taoism:

Zhuang Zhou: A Philosopher and His Enduring Influence:

    Impact on Chinese Philosophy:

    Contemporary Relevance:

    A Christian Response:

While Taoism offers insights into harmony and balance, a Christian theological critique reveals limitations and conflicts. The impersonal nature of the Dao and the absence of a comprehensive moral framework conflict with Christian beliefs. Christianity emphasizes a personal God, a moral framework rooted in divine revelation, salvation through grace, and active engagement in the world.

Taoism does not have a concept of a personal God or a saviour figure like Christianity does and no absolute moral framework. In Matthew 22:37-39: "Jesus said the ultimate call upon or lives is to: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'" Paul also reminding us in Romans 13:10: "Love does no harm to a neighbour. Therefore, love is the fulfilment of the law."

Christianity rightly places greater emphasis on the afterlife and the concept of moral accountability and an eternal life of either separation and judgement. The Christian hope does not promise successful days just to the rich and the strong, but resurrection and life to those who must exist in the shadows of death." Jürgen Moltmann: " This ultimate destination is in the end arbitrated through are relationship or otherwise through Christ himself. As Karl Barth God put it. That which is revealed in Christ stands in judgment over all things human, including religion."

    Conclusion:

While Taoist religious philosophy offers some insights into the interconnectedness of things, a Christian critique reveals both the limitations of a Taoist worldview and the major conflicts it has with Christian theology. The impersonal nature of the Dao, the absence of a comprehensive moral framework, and the emphasis on self-cultivation and self-reliance present significant challenges when examined from a Christian theological perspective. Christianity, with its belief in a personal God, a moral framework rooted in divine revelation, as well as salvation through grace, and the call to active engagement, offers a more comprehensive and coherent theological framework for understanding the human condition and our relationship much more than just a divine force with the God, but rather a personal relationship with the person of God.

Bonus Episode (Philosophy). Aristotle - Politics - A Christian Response (Apologetic) Jun 10, 2024

    Aristotle – Politics.

What makes a good society? How should it be governed and who should be allowed to live in it? These issues are what the Greek philosopher Aristotle called Politics. His writing now 2 1/2 thousand year old have cast a long shadow in political philosophy.

In this work, Aristotle asked what made a society good using terms like ‘oligarchies’, ‘democracies’ and ‘monarchies’ that we still use today. In this highly influential work, Aristotle tried to establish a way of preserving a society through dangerous times. How should it be governed and who should be allowed to live in it? Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Aquinas, to name but a few, have all asked the same questions over the years since. .Aristotle’s conclusions range across the role of wealth and the law, about how men, women and slaves should be treated as well as discussing education and leisure. They are far reaching, influential and, at times, deeply unpalatable to the Christian Worldview.

These are my notes and thoughts quickly drawn together and offered as a bonus episode to you my Patrons. Thank you, without your support the work of my main Bible Podcast would be impossible.

William James - The Principles of Psychology" (1890): A Christian Response

Part A - William James, His Life and Work.

    I. Introduction.

    II. Biography.

III. His Written Work and Ideas.

    "The Principles of Psychology" (1890):

"The Varieties of Religious Experience" (1902):

"Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking" (1907):

    "The Meaning of Truth" (1909):

    "Essays in Radical Empiricism" (1912):

    "The Will to Believe"(1896 lecture).

"Theory of the self" (c1879 Lecture)

    Part B - A Christian Response.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)

This presents a wholly different perspective from James' idea of the importance of individual willpower and action in achieving salvation. According to Christian belief, salvation is a gift from God and not something that can be earned through one's own efforts.

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1)

Salvation is achieved through faith in Jesus Christ, rather than through the individual's own efforts or willpower. James' emphasis on the individual's own actions and willpower can be seen as a deviation from this fundamental Christian belief.Thesis, William James's theories present both challenges and opportunities for the Christian worldview. His emphasis on pragmatism and individualism may not align with Christian beliefs regarding truth and community, and while his theory of the will to believe and religious experience may offer a way into the faith for some seekers, on their own they can reveal the full Christian revelation or experience.

Some aspects of James's philosophy can offer insights that are compatible with Christian beliefs, particularly his emphasis on the practical consequences of ideas and the importance of trust and obedience. Therefore, Christians can engage with James's philosophy critically and thoughtfully, taking what is useful or practical in life whilst at the same time rejecting it as a method or even a system upon which we can live a fruitful Christian Life.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." (Romans 3:23-24)

Additionally, the Bible teaches that a personal relationship with God is essential to our identity and purpose as human beings.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15: 15)

The Christian belief emphasises the universality of sin and the need for redemption through Jesus Christ. William James' focus on the individual's own efforts are insufficient in addressing the fundamental problem of sin and the need for divine intervention.

Finally, although we can acknowledge that William James' Theory of the Self presents a complex philosophical framework that seeks to understand the nature of the human self, but from a Christian perspective, his theory for its potential undermine the importance of a personal relationship with God and the need of a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

    Episode Notes:
In Numbers 35, God designates cities for the Levites, ensuring their presence throughout the land to provide spiritual guidance. These cities, totalling 48, lacked farmland but were supplied with grazing land for their livestock. Additionally, six cities were designated as refuges for individuals who accidentally killed someone. The arrangement ensured justice and protection for both Israelites and foreigners, with laws specifying the consequences for accidental and intentional killings. The assembly would judge cases, protecting the innocent from vengeance and ensuring that murderers faced justice. Premeditated murder carried the death penalty, while accidental killers found refuge until the high priest's death. The laws emphasized fairness and justice, with no ransom accepted for murderers or those seeking refuge. Bloodshed polluted the land, requiring atonement through the blood of the guilty. Ultimately, these laws aimed to maintain justice, provide refuge, and uphold the sanctity of life, reflecting God's care for His people and His presence among them.

    Episode Notes:
Title: Knowing the Specific Will of God for Your Life

    Scripture Reference: Numbers 34:1-29

Opening Question: How do you know the will of God?

    Scripture Reading: Numbers 34:1-12

    • Boundaries: The passage outlines the boundaries of the Promised Land.
      • Southern Boundary: Desert of Zin to the Dead Sea.
      • Western Boundary: The Mediterranean Sea.
      • Northern Boundary: Mediterranean Sea to Mount Hor.
      • Eastern Boundary: Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea.
    • Importance of Boundaries: Knowing boundaries helps understand the scope of inheritance and responsibility.

    Application to Our Lives

    • Spiritual Boundaries: Just as the Israelites needed to know their physical boundaries, we need to understand our moral, ethical, and relational boundaries set by God.
    • Inheritance and Responsibility: The land was a gift from God, and it had to be managed responsibly. Similarly, we must appreciate and steward our blessings from God.
    • Obedience: The Israelites’ possession of the land depended on their faithfulness. God’s promises often have conditions related to our obedience.

Division of the Land: Numbers 34:13-29

    • Assignment by Lot: Land was assigned to the nine and a half tribes by casting lots, demonstrating God's control over the process.
    • Leadership: Specific leaders, including Eleazar the priest and Joshua, were appointed to oversee the division.
    • Spiritual Lesson: Trusting God with our portion and understanding that His allocation is wise and fair.

New Testament Context: God’s Will for Us

    1. Salvation:
      • Primary Will: God's will is for all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4, 2 Peter 3:9).
      • First Step: Aligning with God’s will begins with salvation.
    2. Sanctification:
      • Definition: Being set apart for God (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
      • Four Aspects of Sanctification:
        • Moral Purity: Abstaining from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).
        • Rejoice Always: Maintaining joy in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
        • Pray Without Ceasing: Maintaining a constant attitude of prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
        • Give Thanks in Everything: Cultivating gratitude in all situations (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
    3. Submission:
      • Governmental Authorities: Submitting to authorities as outlined in 1 Peter 2:13-16.
      • Church Leadership: Submitting to church leaders and fostering mutual submission (Ephesians 5:21, Hebrews 13:17).
    4. Spiritual Transformation:
      • Living Sacrifices: Presenting our bodies as living sacrifices and renewing our minds (Romans 12:1-2).
      • Holy Spirit: Transformation through the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18).

    Practical Application of God’s Will

    • Personal Decisions: God's will provides clear boundaries but allows freedom in specific choices.
    • Where to Live: You can live anywhere as long as you live a saved, sanctified, submissive, and spiritually transformed life.
    • Career Choices: Choose a career that aligns with your talents and spiritual gifts
