    #138 Minimalism for Makers & Crafters Oct 17, 2019

Being a maker means lots of decisions and lots of "stuff".

Sometimes that can feel a little overwhelming; yarn that seems it'll never get used; pattern decisions; project decisions. Should I use this color or that color? Wait maybe that stitch instead of this one?

If you create with yarn, chances are you're no stranger to questions like these. A refreshing change of pace came in my chat with T from Debrosse, a maker, business owner and minimalist. In this episode I explored all the areas of minimalism as it relates to makers, yarn business owners and yarn enthusiasts in general.

That has become a mantra for me and you'll hear me say it more and more as B.Hooked grows and develops over the next year. Until recently, I haven't been able to put my finger on how I came to this realization. That is until I started reading Vickie Howell's new book, The Knit Vibe.

She's on the show today to talk about that, what's in the book and so much more.

Is your yarn stash out of control?

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us! I usually need to sort through and organize my yarn stash at least once a year. Admittedly, this isn't something I love scheduling time for but it does save me time in the long run!

Here's the deal - organizing your yarn stash can do four things for you. First, it will save you money because you won't buy yarn you already have (that you forgot about). Second, it will save you time when looking for the right yarn for your project (because you'll know exactly where to look). Third, it will get you excited for the yarn you have (just like when you bought it the first time) and lastly, it will reignite your creative fire!

Are you ready to organize your yarn stash?

#88 Corner to Corner Crochet Nov 01, 2018

Are you ready to take your crochet up a notch? Corner to corner crochet (C2C) can help you do just that. With little to no difficulty you can use C2C and a color changing yarn to create unique color patterns or a gradient-like appearance. #44 How to Calculate the Amount of Yarn Used in a Project Dec 28, 2017

Another great request came in the other day that inspired this podcast episode. She wrote: “Brittany, how do you calculate the amount of yarn that is in your project? I would love to know how much yarn I used so I can use this info later.” This is such a great question that is especially useful for us designers but can also be helpful for hobby crocheters who return to a project after a long hiatus. I’ve been using a self developed system for a few years and now, tested and true, I feel comfortable with its accuracy to share

Why is it important to stay true to your own personal style? We all know the (sometimes huge) time investment that goes into a crochet or knit project. I’ll be the first to admit that “knowing” my own personal style feels like a struggle and I know I’m not alone. That’s why today’s episode is so great. Today’s Guest I’m joined by, Nicole, from

Yarn Can Make or Break Your Project I was asked recently how choose yarn for my projects – pick the project and find the right yarn or vice versa. The short answer is vice versa! I rarely ever choose the project before the yarn (unless I’m following a pattern of course). This way of designing may be a bit backwards from my fellow designers but it’s how my creativity works. #2 Getting Familiar with Pattern Format Mar 09, 2017

How to Read Crochet Patterns - the million dollar question.

If teaching people how to read crochet patterns were easy, we would all know how to do it. It's a difficult topic because we must cross a barrier of concrete and conceptual understanding - the act of taking a concept and turning it into a physical object.

I've set out on a very long journey to answer that question because I know you probably struggle with it in some way or another. We couldn't possibly answer it in one episode so I'm breaking it down into nine. Yes, I need that much time to explain it in a way that will finally make sense to you.

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin

I know so many of you struggle reading patterns and that can limit your creativity, success and overall enjoyment of crocheting. Patterns are a huge part of what we do and we must learn to be fluent in this language. This is where you need to start, at the beginning.

We’ll cover formalities of the show – what to expect and when. But most importantly, we’re going to explore how this podcast will benefit you and why you should continue listening in the future.
